History and Mission The National Center for Medical Rehabilitation Research (NCMRR) was established within the National Institutes of Health (NIH) by legislation (P.L. 101-613) passed in 1990. The Center is a component of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). The mission of NCMRR is to foster development of scientific knowledge needed to enhance the health, productivity, independence, and quality of life of persons with disabilities. This is accomplished by supporting research on enhancing the functioning of people with disabilities in daily life. A primary goal of the Center is to bring the health related problems of people with disabilities to the attention of America's best scientists in order to capitalize upon the myriad advances occurring in the biological, behavioral, and engineering sciences. 85. Book: Coping With Mild Traumatic Brain Injury - By Dr. Diane Stoler: Speaker, Ps
Applies to all aspects of brain trauma, including concussion, stroke, and brain tumor, Dr. Stoler coauthored, with Barbara Albers Hill.

Dr. Diane's Book: Coping With Mild Traumatic Brain Injury
Order this Book... Dr. Diane Roberts Stoler, Ed.D., a health psychologist and professional speaker, sustained a stroke from a cerebral bleed and two traumatic brain injuries (an auto accident and brain surgery). She, like millions of people, was diagnosed with a mild traumatic brain injury, not because of the severity of her injury, but indicating the length of time she was unconscious following the injury (up to 60 minutes). The terms mild, moderate and severe when relating to brain injury do not indicate the severity of the injury or the eventual outcome. The terms mild, moderate and severe, when referring to brain injury, are based on alertness, amnesia and how long a person has been unconscious following injury. Her life was turned upside down because of the symptoms of her brain injury, which she had to live with on a daily basis. Dr. Diane faced many new difficulties and challenges. No resources were available to provide adequate information or solutions to the issues she needed addressed. Dr. Diane realized that she could not be the only person to face this lack of information. Thus began her search for answers for herself and all others, world wide, with a brain injury.

86. Brain Injury Permanency From Concussion
The Subtle brain injury Page is a comprehensive treatment of the impact of what hasbeen mislabeled mild brain injury, concussion or post concussion syndrome.
http://subtlebraininjury.com/
Subtle Brain Injury "Concussion, PCS, Mild Brain Injury, Post-Traumatic Syndrome. All of these old labels equal Subtle Damage to Our Minds" Does Concussion involve permanent brain damage? It can. Does Concussion disable? Often, but usually not for extended periods. Will I get better? In all likelihood. If I don't have a full recovery, is it because I am nuts? No. Why is it that some people continue to have persisting problems? That is what this page is about. Subtle Brain Injury Table of Contents email the Brain Injury Law Group Far too much of the focus in the study of what the researchers always call "mild" brain injury, is trying to predict how serious a brain injury will become, based upon the way in which the patient interacts with medical professionals in the acute stage. This misses the point. Certainly, if there was no concussion, there isn't likely to be a brain injury. But once there has been a concussion, the focus should not be on categorizing how serious the concussion was, but on what deficits the person is left with, after a healing period, and what we can do to minimize the disruption of those deficits upon this persons life. Why do some people have apparent full recoveries, while others, are profoundly effected by a similar injury? To begin this discussion, we must summarize our theory of the pathology of subtle brain injury.

Definition of Traumatic Brain Injury
The regulations for Public Law 101-476, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), formerly the Education of the Handicapped Act, now include Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) as a separate disability category. While children with TBI have always been eligible for special education and related services, it should be easier for them under this new category to receive the services to which they are entitled. Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is defined within the IDEA as an acquired injury to the brain caused by an external physical force, resulting in total or partial functional disability or psychosocial impairment, or both, that adversely affects a child's educational performance. The term applies to open and closed head injuries resulting in impairments in one or more areas, such as cognition; language; memory; attention; reasoning; abstract thinking; judgement; problem-solving; sensory, perceptual, and motor abilities; psychosocial behavior; physical functions; information processing; and speech. The term does not apply to brain injuries that are congenital or degenerative, or brain injuries induced by birth trauma. [(Code of Federal Regulations, Title 34, Section 300.7(b)(12)]

ATTENTION:
HEAD INJURY SURVIVORS
As you know, life after a TBI is very different than before. I also know; I sustained one in a car accident in 1979.
Since then, I have worked extremely hard to make my life better, and more productive.
In this site, you will find a survey I have put together about "Recreation and Leisure." Please take the time to fill it out, and let me know how you deal with anger, frustrations, and times of boredom you experience in your life.
My work on my web page and corresponding with other survivors is continuous and well worth it. My goal still remains, to raise awareness of this silent epidemic, and to share my book with those who can benefit from it.
Thank you!
Daniel Windheim

The purpose of this web site is to reach survivors of Traumatic Brain Injury and those individuals who are interested in knowing about the impact on an individual's life following one, and to provide a guide on living one's life after such an injury.
Included in this site, you will find information about TBI; responses by TBI survivors throughout the world on various aspects of their lives; the opportunity to contribute your feedback about living with TBI; my own writings on my own experiences; and information about my books for purchase. This is a resource for us; and there is much here of great value.

What is an acquired brain injury?
An acquired brain injury (ABI) is an injury to the brain that has happened since birth. It could be the result of an accident, illness such as an infection, stroke, tumour or poisoning. The injury can affect the way a person thinks, feels and behaves and can, but not always, affect them physically. The medical definition of ABI, from the 1996 Standards Manual and Interpretative Guidelines for Medical Rehabilitation produced by CARF, which has been adopted by the UK ABI Forum, is as follows: A non-degenerative injury to the brain that has occurred since birth. It can be caused by an external force or by metabolic derangement. The term 'acquired brain injury' includes traumatic brain injuries such as open or closed head injuries, or non traumatic brain injuries, such as those caused by strokes and other vascular accidents, tumours, infectious diseases, hypoxia, metabolic disorders (eg. Liver and kidney diseases or diabetic coma), and toxic products taken into the body through inhalation or ingestion

It can happen to anyone. It affects everyone
Each year, more than sixteen thousand Ontario residents sustain a traumatic brain injury; these injuries occur most often, as a result of motor vehicle collisions, work-related injury, or leisure activities. In many cases, the effects of the injury do not end at the hospital emergency room. They may result in permanent cognitive, physical, emotional-behavioural, and/or psychosocial deficits that will affect not only the individual, but his or her family, friends and community. People living with the effects of brain injury often find they need help dealing with the changes in their lives that such an injury brings.
