Braininjury.com was created several years ago by Attorney Steven (Woody) Igou to fill several needs. First, victims of traumatic brain injury and their families often are not given adequate information regarding the nature of their medical condition. The field of traumatic brain injury is extremely complex and often health care providers do not have the time or resources to adequately address all of the medical and recovery issues involved. The website provides some of that valuable information. Secondly, persons with traumatic brain injury need specialized legal representation, if a case is going to be pursued. Brain injury litigation is uniquely complex and requires attorneys that are experienced in the medical and legal issues involved.

70. Aquired Brain Injury
Short article describing ABI, directed at college students.
http://www.dissvcs.uga.edu/whatabi.html
Acquired Brain Injury, Defined Acquired brain injury (ABI) is the leading killer and cause of disability in children and young adults. More than two million head injuries occur each year. Statistics show that the highest rate of injury occurs in young men between the ages of 15 and 24. As a result, there is an emerging population of students with ABI on the college campus today. Due to the symptoms associated with their brain injuries, the Disability Services (DS) provides academic and support services to these students. ABI is an impairment of brain functioning that is physically or psychologically verifiable. Common causes of ABI are brain lesions caused by traumas such as motor vehicle accidents, falls, assaults and violence or sports injuries. Other brain lesions can be due to internal events such as focal brain lesions, tumors, cerebral vascular accidents, aneurysm or infections of the brain. Another cause of ABI is ingestion of toxic substances due to either alcohol or drug abuse or exposure to toxic chemicals. Students who have experienced a brain injury often enter or return to college with cognitive, psychological and/or sensorimotor disorders. Problems in the cognitive area usually pose the greatest challenge in the classroom. Although students may experience cognitive problems in such areas as memory, attention, and organization, they may still possess the abilities to succeed in an academic environment.

75. OEP - Optometric Extension Program: Acquired Brain Injury & Hidden Visual Proble
Addressing visual problems that may be overlooked during initial treatment of brain injury.
http://www.healthy.net/oep/BRAIN.HTM

Hidden Visual Problems
Acquired Brain Injury can come in many forms. Below are some common diagnoses:
  • Traumatic Brain Injury Mild Acquired Brain Injury Mild Closed Head Injury Post-Concussive Syndrome Cervical Trauma Syndrome Post Traumatic Vision Syndrome Stroke Cerebral Palsy Cerebral Vascular Accident
Essentially, Acquired Brain Injury is an insult to the brain. It can result from a blow to the head, stroke, or neurological dysfunction. This can produce a diminished or altered state of consciousness, and may result in impairment or cognitive abilities, sensory processing and/or physical function. Impairments may be mild or severe; most are amenable to rehabilitation. Specific effects can be:
  • Disturbance of behavioral or emotional functioning Partial or total functional disability Physiological maladjustment Visual dysfunction
HIDDEN VISUAL PROBLEMS
Often visual problems resulting from Acquired Brain Injury are overlooked during initial treatment of the injury. Frequently these problems are hidden and neglected, lengthening and impairing rehabilitation. Vision is the most important source of sensory information. Consisting of a sophisticated complex of subsystems, the visual process involves the flow and processing of information to the brain. Because there is a close relationship between vision and the brain, Acquired Brain Injury can disrupt the visual process, interfering with the flow and processing of information. The result is a vision problem. Symptoms indicating a vision problem are:

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy New England Hyperbaric Center (NEHC), located in the heart of The Berkshires, is a freestanding facility dedicated to providing hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) for a wide range of medical conditions. HBOT is a treatment in which patients breathe pure oxygen while sitting or lying down in a pressurized chamber ( see photos ). It is painless and causes oxygen to be dissolved in the plasma and delivered to the tissues in much higher than normal concentrations. A high dose of oxygen administered in this way has several important effects on the body, including improved wound healing, bone repair, immune function and nerve cell regeneration. If you are in need of hyperbaric oxygen therapy, we can provide a unique combination of medical supervision, safety and comfort. New England Hyperbaric Center
