Bribe offer? Boxing officials will double it
By Tim Dahlberg
Associated Press
SYDNEY, Australia Olympic boxing has finally sunk to this even the people running it are now offering bribes. Roy Jones Jr. was denied a gold medal by a controversial decision at Seoul in 1988. Actually, amateur boxing officials are going one better by giving Olympic judges and referees an offer they can't refuse double the bribe in cash for anyone reporting an attempt to influence the scoring of a fight. If that doesn't work, spy cameras high above the ring in the Sydney Exhibition Center are trained on judges to help make sure there's no hanky-panky. With boxing just fighting its way off the ropes as an endangered Olympic sport, desperate measures are being taken to keep it scandal-free in Sydney. "We mean it," said American Loring Baker, who made the special double-your-bribe offer. "By doing this we are actually trying to eliminate the possibility of a bribe." The logic might seem convoluted, but amateur officials hope just the fact the offer was made might be enough to keep the 35 referees and judges in line during the games.

Bunce on Britain's disappointment
Former Olympic bronze medallist Ritchie Woodhall has labelled the qualification process for European boxers "unfair".
Great Britain will only be sending one contender - lightweight Amir Khan - to the Athens Games, while Ireland will be represented by middleweight Andy Lee. And Woodhall told BBC Sport that this was the result of a system that favours some continents over others. "Europe is the hardest area without a doubt," he said: "If our lads were in Oceania, we'd have 14 through." "In Europe, it's more or less like going through a championship with 16 former Soviet Union fighters in the division. If you're boxing out of Australia, you're fighting against contenders from the Samoan Islands or Fiji for a place in the Olympics and that's not fair
Ritchie Woodhall "Now the eastern Europeans are pretty cool customers when it comes to amateur boxing, so it's extremely difficult to get through.

Referee Stanislav Kirsanov (centre) has been suspended
The Olympic boxing competition has been cleared of claims of corruption - despite two referees being suspended at Sydney. The International Amateur Boxing Association found no evidence of corruption at the Games, AIBA general secretary Loring Baker revealed. Yugoslav Sreten Jabucanin and Russian Stanislav Kirsanov were both banned for four years following debatable decisions in favour of fighters from Kazakhstan. Baker says that the federation had found no evidence of corruption but would welcome any proof of wrongdoing. "If anyone has proof of such things, we'd love to have it, against anyone, myself included," Baker said. "I'm sure any official would be removed if we had proof." Protested The US team protested at the handling of the featherweight final in which Bekzat Sattarkhanov posted a 22-14 points win over US world champion Ricardo Juarez, which was officiated by Kirsanov. Kirsanov was immediately suspended, but the result was allowed to stand and Sattarkhanov kept the gold medal for Kazakhstan.

A Modern Perspective of the Ancient Olympic Events
by Richard Bell Today's Modern (Summer) Olympic Games have 32 different categories of competitive events. When you consider that of these many, like track and field, have several events within the category and then break down further to men's and women's and team and individual competition, it is nearly impossible to keep track of the Games as they progress. Things were simpler in the "old days." The Ancient Olympics had 13 events divided into 6 main categories. Of course they were for men only. The main categories were Boxing, Equestrian events, Pankration, Pentathlon, Running and Jumping. The Equestrian events were broken down into two sub-categories: chariot racing and riding. The Pentathlon was a combination of five events: discus, javelin, jump, running, and wrestling. Boxing in ancient Greece had fewer rules than boxing today. There were no rounds and boxers fought until one of them was knocked out, or admitted he had been beaten. There was no rule that prevented a boxer from hitting an opponent when he was down. There was no weight class in either the men's or boy's divisions and the contestants were chosen randomly. The boxers did not wear gloves but wrapped their hands and wrists with leather straps called himantes.

Boxing Indoor Outdoor Discontinued Olympic Sports Boxing is another of "ancient sports" that we find in the Olympics, dating to ancient Egypt, in fact. The term "boxing" was coined in London in 1743 and means "fist-fight". Jack Braughton published the first ever rulebook. The first Olympic organizers in 1896 considered the sport too violent and undignified, leaving the honor to fall on the 1904 St. Louis Games. Only men compete in the Olympics boxing competition. Boxers compete against each other based on specific weight categories (11 in all), with four two-minute rounds mandated by Olympic rules. Gloved fists, of course, are obligatory. Each boxer tries to hit his opponent in the face or jaw as well as on the torso above the waist. The winner is determined either by a knockout when the opponent falls down and cannot get up in 10 seconds or by points, allocated by ring-side judges for successful punches and hits. The match takes place within a boxing ring, an elevated platform surrounded by ropes. It was an Olympic medal at the 1960 Rome Games that launched the professional carrier of legendary Muhammad Ali (then Cassius Clay).

http://www.boxing.ca/amateur.html
AMATEUR BOXING IN CANADA A Brief History Amateur Boxing started in Canada in 1892 with the incorporation of the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association. It was also practiced in the armed forces, in the tradition of the British army regimental championships. Amateur boxing did not really come to prominence in Canada until six Canadian boxers attended the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp, Belgium, and returned with 5 medals, one gold, two silver and two bronze. Prior to 1969, amateur boxing in Canada was under the supervision and coordination by officers of the Amateur Athletic Union of Canada. With its authority it controlled the amateur status of athletes and officials. It was also represented on the Canadian Olympic Association and the Commonwealth Games Association. In 1968, AAU of Canada was dissolved. The Canadian Amateur Boxing Association was founded and incorporated under Federal Charter in 1969. The newly formed Association stressed the complete separation and distinction from professional boxing. Priorities were the uniform enforcement of rules, with emphasis on safety and enhancement of competitions, the creation of a formal structure, and the development of officials to the highest national and international standards. Decentralization of jurisdiction eventually led to the creation of Branches, the forerunners of the current Provincial/Territorial Associations. Participation in Amateur Boxing increased by 600 percent over the first 4 years of CABA, with membership reaching 2,175 in 1973.

ANCIENT ORIGINS BOXING LIVES TO FIGHT ANOTHER DAY
Boxing's place in the Olympic Games was assured for four more years after much debate post-Atlanta about controversial judging and scoring, poor refereeing and not least of all the risk of brain damage through punches to the head. Olympic boxers have long worn protective head gear, though here too some experts have offered up evidence that, even with head gear, the sport is dangerous. It is an argument that dates back to the birth of the modern Games - though the ancient fathers of Olympic sport appeared to care less for rules, regulations and safety. In the ancient Olympics, boxers wore no more than leather straps on their hands for protection and the winner was the man left standing, head held high, either because his rival was on the floor or had conceded. That approach was civilised compared with the preferences of the Romans, who liked their fighters to wear gladiatorial spikes on their gloves, or have the gloves weighed down by strips of lead; such fights often ended when one of the fighters dropped dead.
