Boxers fought without rounds until one man was knocked out, or admitted he had been beaten. Unlike the modern sport, there was no rule against hitting an opponent when he was down. There were no weight classes within the mens' and boys' divisions; opponents for a match were chosen randomly.

Qamar has a chance to seal Olympic berth By Our Sports Reporter NEW DELHI, MAY 4. The purpose and perseverance shown by boxer Mohammed Ali Qamar during his gold medal triumph at the Manchester Commonwealth Games seems to be lacking these days. It's time Qamar came up with another solid performance to boost his confidence as well as book a place for the Athens Olympics. The light-fly pugilist has a chance to do that in the third and final Olympic qualifying tournament to be held in Karachi from May 6 to 12.

Quebec officials support barred Olympic boxers
WebPosted Fri, 14 May 2004 20:16:47 EDT CBC SPORTS ONLINE - Quebec sports officials have taken up the fight to get two boxers included on the Canadian Olympic team this summer. Quebec sports minister Jean-Marc Fournier and Boxe Quebec president Russ Anber each wrote letters expressing their disappointment that Montreal boxers Jean Pascal and Benoit Gaudet were not considered to have qualified for the Athens Games. Canada's Jean Pascal, a gold medallist at the 2002 Commonwealth Games, won't be competing at the Athens Olympics. (CP Photo) Fournier contacted Canadian Olympic Committee chairman Chris Rudge, while Anber wrote to Stan Keyes, the Minister of State for Sport. Pascal and Benoit both met the international qualifying standard at a competition last month in Rio de Janeiro. But the event wasn't on the Canadian Olympic Committee's list of qualifiers as agreed upon by the Canadian Amateur Boxing Association and the COC last February.
