History
Boxing was an official Olympic event in 1908. After skipping 1912, the sport has been on every Olympic program since 1920. Since 1936, the International Amateur Boxing Association has awarded the Val Barker Cup to the Olympic boxer displaying the best style and technique. Bal Barker was the first general-secretary of the association. Competitors take part in a single-elimination tournament with no seeding. Through 1948, the boxers who lost in the semi-final were matched in a fight for the bronze medal. Since 1952, bronze medals have been awarded to both semi-final losers. There are five judges for an Olympic bout. Through 1988, a majority vote of the judges determined the outcome. A computerized scoring system was adopted in 1992. Under that system, a judge is supposed to press a button to record each punch landed by a fighter and, if three of the five judges agree, that fighter is awarded a point. If the fight ends in a tie, the high and low scores are dropped and the scores of the three remaining judges are added. Bouts consisted of three 3-minute rounds until 2000, when the format was changed to four 2-minute rounds.

The Ancient Olympic Games
Although the ancient Olympic games were first recorded in 776 BC, they originated at least a century before that and possibly as early as the 13th century BC. One Greek legend said that the great Herakles (Hercules, in the Roman form) won a race at Olympia, a plain in the small state of Elis, and then decreed that the race should be re-enacted every four years. Another said that Zeus himself had originated the festival after defeating Cronus for the sovereignty of heaven. The more likely story is that the Olympic festival was a local religious event until 884 BC, when Iphitus, the king of Elis, decided to turn it into a broader, pan-Hellenic festival. To accomplish that, he entered into a temporary truce with other rulers, allowing athletes and others to travel peacefully to Olympia while the festival was going on. The Greeks based their chronology on four-year periods called Olympiads, and the Olympic festival marked the beginning of each Olympiad. Evidently, the festival was reorganized in 776 BC, which was considered the start of the first Olympiad. The festival was basically a religious gathering to celebrate the gods worshipped in common by all Hellenes, primarily Zeus. There were three other major pan-Hellenic festivals, the Pythian, the Nemean, and the Isthmian, all of which included fairs, but the festival at Olympia became pre-eminent by 572 BC, when Elis and Sparta entered into an alliance under which Elis was in charge of the event itself while Sparta enforced the sacred truce.

TeamStore Will boxing be knocked out? Click here for more on this story Latest: Tuesday September 19, 2000 02:20 AM SYDNEY, Australia It's an oft-used headline Boxing's On the Ropes! but hardly anybody remembers it flying into print before even the first punch has been thrown. But the sport is so damaged that there's already talk this could be the last Olympics to feature the same program that produced Muhammad Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard. About all it would take is one more outrageous decision, one more corrupted result, just another Roy Jones fiasco. That one continues to resonate because Jones, now regarded as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, could not sway the hometown judges in Seoul's 1988 Games and lost one of the worst-scored fights in Olympic history. But there have been so many in Olympic boxing over the years that not even a high official from its governing body can promise the sport's continuation. Said AIBA vice president Arthur Tunstall recently: "A new IOC president could look at boxing being a controversial sport and put a proposal to his executive that boxing goes off. That is something we have to wait and see what happens and make sure the Sydney boxing program doesn't have any problems."

Sport of the month: Boxing The sport of boxing was never intrinsically linked with aggressive attack and heavy hitting. According to Dion, a historian, since ancient times people “did not consider beating and quarelling to be evidence of bravery". To the contrary, the aim of the 'un-injured' (atravmatistos) athlete in ancient Greece was the constant defense and the avoidance of blows, until his opponent was exhausted in attack and was led to 'apagorefsi', namely surrender by raising either one or two fingers, a sign that he acknowledged his defeat. A boxer called Melagomas from Karia in Asia Minor was famous in ancient times for this ‘un-injured’ style of boxing. He was able to avoid his opponents' blows and defend himself for two days, until his opponents conceded defeat. Description Only male boxers participate in the Olympic Games. Women's official boxing bouts first appeared in 1993 but have not been yet included in the official Olympic programme. They must be at least 17 years old and no older than 34. Boxing pairs are drawn by lot, just as in ancient times, according to their respective weight category. Each boxing bout lasts four rounds of two minutes each, with a one-minute break between each round. A score is marked when the athlete hits his opponent at the front part of the head or on the upper part of the body - above the belt line. However, the score is registered only when at least three of the five judges acknowledge the hit simultaneously.

unlike in other sports, athletes as well as referees and judges of professionalboxing are not permitted to participate in amateur and olympic boxing events.
    http://www.boxing.ca/differen.html
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AMATEUR (OLYMPIC) and PROFESSIONAL BOXING Up-dated The main differences are in the Rules as well as in the Objectives of the two sports, with different safety standards and records. Because of this distinction, unlike in other sports, athletes as well as referees and judges of professional boxing are not permitted to participate in amateur and Olympic boxing events. The following are a few examples of the differences between amateur and professional boxing. It is recognized that while the rules for amateur boxing are the same all over the world, rules for professional boxing can vary significantly, and in a few countries or states may have now equalled or even exceeded safety standards of amateur boxing in some instances. The purpose of this web page is to provide factual information in the light of much confusion and misconception. No bias against or preference for a particular sport is expressed, implied, or intended. Aspect Amateur Professional Safety Rules Are geared to protect the health and safety of the athlete. Uniform in all 190 AIBA affiliated countries. Rules vary from country to country, sometimes even within one country.
