Greg's diaryDecember 2001
Saturday, 1 December 2001
Tried to sleep in this morning, but didn't do very well. When I looked at the clock, time had stopped: another power failure. Although it was well after breakfast time, none of us had noticed in time, and all but three machines had died. While trying to get the core machines up, the UPS decided to turn them off again. Why are UPSs such a pain to use? Spent the rest of the day trying to catch up with having a life. Typed in some additional days of my May 1967 diary. What a lot I wrote in those days!
Sunday, 2 December 2001
Another couple of power failures this morning, but fortunately they were short, and the UPSs didn't misbehave. I really need to get UPSs for the remaining machines. Didn't do much all day. Tried to get the Citroën CX started again, since Yana wants to drive it when she passes her driving test, hopefully tomorrow. Unfortunately, the battery is completely dead. Spent most of the late afternoon cooking a Chinese steamed and deep fried duck.

Posada Milagro, A Gift for the Holidays
The posada is a Mexican and Central American Christmas holiday tradition recalling the journey of Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem, and the refuge they sought in unwelcoming lands. In Mexico, the posada is a neighborhood celebration that takes place over nine evenings leading up to Christmas Eve. Each night, families join together in a procession, singing songs and visiting each other’s homes asking to be let in, and they are turned away until they arrive at the home that will host the entire neighborhood that evening. Once inside, warm meals and sweet foods are shared, as are traditional songs, stories, poetry and dance.

I'd like to review some SF, too, because I really admire people who attempt to write it. I tried it once or twice and never got the hang of it. As for horror, I saw the Night on Bald Mountain section from the end of Fantasia (you know, the big devil-thing coming up from the mountain) when I was about four, and I still can't listen to the piece without nightmares. No horror, please. Life's scary enough. Publications, if any: Oh, please. I'll be surprised if I ever have the cojones to send anything to workshop. Anything else you think would interest other members (age, occupation, interests, etc.): Hello, all! I'm an 18-year-old music performance major in Texas. I play the euphonium, and my goal in life right now is to increase cultural awareness of the greatness of the euphonium. I plan to attend law school after I graduate in a few years. I like jazz and funk dancing, but I've converted to kick-boxing in the absence of a good dance studio. I have two beautiful border collies named Beau and Deirdre, a perfect dog and his loyal chew toy, respectively. My favorite actor is Ewan McGregor and my favorite actress is Natalie Portman, neither because of the new Star Wars movie, which I hated. My favorite pieces of literature are Samuel Beckett's Endgame and Tanith Lee's Biting the Sun (go read it, go read it, go read it!) I listen to metal/hard rock.

    http://usmalibrary2.usma.edu/1898/class1898 bios.html
    THE SPANISH WAR CLASS
    by Susan Linnerud
One hundred years ago, West Point watched as its graduates saw combat in the first major international conflict in American history. The Monroe Doctrine had kept American soldiers on American soil for the greater part of the Academy’s history. Graduates had been involved in the Civil War and fought skirmishes during the Indian Wars, but for the first time, in 1898, they were fighting on foreign soil as the US made its debut as a world power. The American battleship the Maine was sent to Cuba as a show of force as rebels were fighting with the Spanish forces there. The battleship blew up in Havana Harbor, triggering the Spanish-American War. The four month conflict freed Cuba from Spanish rule and made Puerto Rico a possession of the US. Americans also fought the Spanish in the Philippines, which likewise was seeking its independence from Spain.
For the conflict with Spain, 50,000 men were transported to battlefields in the tropics12,000 miles apartwhere they won their victories without a single defeat, all within a period of 113 days from the declaration of war to the signing of the surrender protocol. New developments in the art of war had battlefield commanders communicating by telephone and regular army soldiers using smokeless powder in their weapons for the first time. The strategic movement of these soldiers was the Army’s responsibility. The Quartermaster Corps owned 11 ships when war was declared, bought 69 more in the ensuing months and chartered about 60 for specific missions. The West Point Class of 1898 watched as the nation prepared and left the Academy eager to use their recent training and join in the war effort.

Why would a man welcome his own murder? That’s the question asked by Ernest Hemingway in his magazine short story “The Killers”, which became a quintessential film noir offering in the 40s, and the first ever made for TV movie in the 60s. Both versions are presented here in Criterion’s double disc offering…a real treat for film students who can compare and contrast to their hearts’ content. Interestingly enough, a young Don Siegel was slated to direct the first filmed version of The Killers

Summary: the difference language and culture can make I viewed this movie in Israel, where it was shown with subtiles. Whilst discusing the movie what stood out was how those who had relied only on the text viewed it as a serious presentation exactly as the style/era that it was spofing. Contrast this with native English speakers, who also were familiar with the era could detect the various sendups and would frequently burst out in peals of laughter. All in all I found it very well presented and acted, well worth viewing both for it's content and social comment. Wayne Malin (waynemichael_98@yahoo.com)

By Steve Litt The first step in the Universal Troubleshooting Process is "Get the Attitude". The Attitude is much more than a first step it's a tool you use throughout the Troubleshooting Process. It's also the most interesting (at least to my audiences) part of Troubleshooting. And the toughest. And the most unbelievable. And it's the most important factor in predicting Troubleshooting success. What is The Attitude? How do you get it? How do you keep it? This issue of Troubleshooting Professional Magazine explores these issues. Some of the articles use a boxing metaphor. When I was a tech at a radio-tv shop, my boss was an ex boxer. He once told me that most of the guys he fought were his friends. In the ring it was his job to beat the other guy into submission. Nothing personal, it was just his job. Sounds a lot like an Attitude-enabled Troubleshooter battling a problem, doesn't it? So kick back, relax, and read this issue. And remember, if you're a Troubleshooter, this is your magazine. Enjoy!.
