FROM CHUMASH CASINO RESORT IN SANTA YNEZ, CALIFORNIA

SANTA YNEZ, CALIF. (Jan. 16, 2004) – In the opening telecast of the year on “ShoBox: The New Generation,” undefeated Ishe “Sugar Shay” Smith captured the vacant United States Boxing Association (USBA)/World Boxing Council (WBC) Continental Americas and North American Boxing Organization (NABO) welterweight titles with a unanimous 12-round decision over former two-time world champion Randall Bailey Thursday on SHOWTIME. In the co-feature, Jose Antonio Ojeda registered a third-round knockout over Arturo Barraza. The Ojeda-Barraza match replaced a middleweight scrap between Ian Gardner and Julio Cesar De La Cruz. Their scheduled 10-round bout was scratched early Thursday when De La Cruz failed his medical examination. The doubleheader at Chumash Casino Resort was promoted by Gary Shaw Productions, LLC, and aired at 11 p.m. ET/PT. The telecast was the 37th in the popular “ShoBox” series. “ShoBox,” which began its third season Thursday, debuted on July 21, 2001.

If you see him on the streets of Sunny Isle Beach near Miami, Florida, he'll usually be wearing shades, dark hair, and a smile. If you overheard him talking about making odds on the Trinidad-Thiam fight, you might think he was a wannabe hood or a hustler. But, if you sat down and talked to him, the vocabulary and subtleties of his observations would give you a mental double-take. And if you actually saw what he does all day long, you'd know different. Charles Jay, 39, former boxing publicist, promoter, matchmaker, radio host, blackjack expert, casino consultant, odds maker, and boxing columnist, publishes a daily web site called TotalAction.com that has arguably the best set of daily links to boxing-related news stories on the web. Averaging about 20 to 30 major stories a day in regular times, and spiking up to over 60 a day around the time of big fights, Jay tracks down English-language boxing stories from such places as Thailand, South Africa, Nigeria, Argentina, the United Kingdom, mainland Europe, and all over the United States. The site went up on March 1, 1999, and since then has had over 2,000,000 hits, averaging between 8-10 thousand a day, from 42 countries, shooting up to 25,000 a day during the NBA draft. It's a site that many boxing writers around the world visit daily. A site poised, Jay hopes, to start making some money from advertising.

T hose familiar with the sport of amateur Boxing agree:
Established by USA Boxing in 1987, the USOEC is home to one of the premier boxing teams in America, producing no less than Olympic, world and national champions.
As the official record shows, USOEC boxers accounted for one third of the 2000 U.S. Olympic boxing team and literally half of the boxing medals won at the Olympic games in Sydney, Australia. Yet, while these are enviable records for any boxing team, anywhere in the world, athletic accomplishment represents only half the story.
Aside from training some of the finest athletes in the world, the USOEC Boxing Program also prides itself on proven commitment to academic achievement. The secret of this dual success lies in a world-class coaching staff, excellent training and teaching facilities, and quality support services.
USOEC Assistant Boxing Coach Larry Nicholson agrees:
Today, Coach Mitchell and the entire USOEC staff can hold their heads high in the company of young athletes who, through courage, endurance and dedication, set an example for America and the world:

Keith Aili, 28, was born in Minnesota. He started driving a dog team at the age of 13. Ever since he’s been running dogs, he has wanted to run the Iditarod. He owns and operates Wolf Ridge Kennel with the help of his brother, Kirk, who runs his yearling dogs. Together they train and race Keith’s 80 Alaskan husky sled dogs. Keith likes to spend his free time doing carpentry work and guiding bear hunters in the north woods of Minnesota. Ken Anderson, Fairbanks, AK Ken Anderson, 30, was born in Minnesota. He says he began mushing when he was three years old and became interested in the Iditarod when his dad bought him a book on the Iditarod when he was 14. He began college in Minnesota and came to Alaska in 1993 where he finished college at UAF. He says the reason he came to Alaska was “to volunteer for the Iditarod and work as a handler for Jeff King.” He says his hobbies are sailing, writing and college hockey. Ken and Gwen Holdman, also an Iditarod veteran, were married in Hawaii after the 2002 Iditarod. John Baker, Kotzebue, AK

Search this site: Boston Globe Sports Writers Dan Shaughnessy Not much needs to be said about Shaughnessy. His style can be summed up as "the curse", personal attacks, paranoia and general doom and gloom. A Massachusetts native, (Groton) he joined the Globe around 1975, starting as a High School sports reporter. Shaughnessy fancies himself a historian of the Boston sports scene. He is a frequent guest on WTKK 96.9 FM and WHDH's Sports Xtra. He also writes and contributes regularly to ESPN The Magazine. Book credits include "The curse of the bambino" (of course) as well as "Fenway: A biography in words and pictures", "At Fenway" and "Ever Green" (His best work, in my opinion.) Bob Ryan Michael Holley Holley left the Globe briefly a couple years ago after seven years at the paper to pursue a columnist's job on the Chicago Tribune. The Ohio-raised Holley resigned from the Tribune after only three months and rejoined the Globe in January 2002. Holley's strength is also the NBA, though he's good with the NFL and MLB as well. One of the few African-American columnists in town, Holley often offers a young, refreshing perspective on the local scene. is a frequent television guest on WHDH's "Sports Xtra". He has a book in the works on the Patriots under Bill Belichick 2001-2004. The last update I had was that the book would be coming out in September, 2004.

THE SPANISH WAR CLASS
by Susan Linnerud
One hundred years ago, West Point watched as its graduates saw combat in the first major international conflict in American history. The Monroe Doctrine had kept American soldiers on American soil for the greater part of the Academy’s history. Graduates had been involved in the Civil War and fought skirmishes during the Indian Wars, but for the first time, in 1898, they were fighting on foreign soil as the US made its debut as a world power. The American battleship the Maine was sent to Cuba as a show of force as rebels were fighting with the Spanish forces there. The battleship blew up in Havana Harbor, triggering the Spanish-American War. The four month conflict freed Cuba from Spanish rule and made Puerto Rico a possession of the US. Americans also fought the Spanish in the Philippines, which likewise was seeking its independence from Spain.
For the conflict with Spain, 50,000 men were transported to battlefields in the tropics12,000 miles apartwhere they won their victories without a single defeat, all within a period of 113 days from the declaration of war to the signing of the surrender protocol. New developments in the art of war had battlefield commanders communicating by telephone and regular army soldiers using smokeless powder in their weapons for the first time. The strategic movement of these soldiers was the Army’s responsibility. The Quartermaster Corps owned 11 ships when war was declared, bought 69 more in the ensuing months and chartered about 60 for specific missions. The West Point Class of 1898 watched as the nation prepared and left the Academy eager to use their recent training and join in the war effort.

Ex-Red Sox Manager Darrell Johnson Dies
... Hornets Hope To Withstand Heat In Miami NEW ORLEANS (AP) - New Orleans general manager Bob Bass retired Wednesday after a coaching and front-office career spanning more than a half-century, including nine years with the Hornets. "I know when it's my time, and this is my time," Bass said.
The announcement came a day after the Hornets were eliminated from the playoffs by the Miami Heat, losing Game 7 of their first-round series 85-77. The Hornets never had a losing season during Bass' tenure and made the playoffs seven times. He'll help the team through the NBA draft next month. Bass was instrumental in the hiring of head coach Tim Floyd before this season. The Hornets were expected to be one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference, but they finished 41-41. The team had problems in part because of the absence of Jamal Mashburn, who was an All-Star and the team's leading scorer the previous season. But Mashburn played only 19 games and missed the playoffs entirely.
