The Net provides us with a whole new method of communication and thankfully - the Net goes Bowling! Any column about Bowling and the Internet would be remiss without a mention of one of the Web's most comprehensive, entertaining and intriguing sites of all- The Complete Bowling Index The most fun that I had on the Net this week was visiting, reading and reviewing Collegiate Bowling Home pages My only disappointment is that of the dozens of colleges that have teams that participate in inter-collegiate competition, only a handful of them offer Home pages.
October 15, 1997 Collegiate bowling surfs the net! by Jan Leasure "The Net!" These two little words have taken on a whole new meaning in the '90's! Hair net? Fish net? Butterfly net? I don't think so! "The Net," today can only mean one thing-The Internet! The Net provides us with a whole new method of communication and thankfully - the Net goes Bowling! The Internet and various forms of on-line e-mail services allow college students today to keep in touch instantaneously. These same services allow us to obtain some great information about our favorite sport-Bowling-if we only know where to look. The most fascinating site that The Complete Bowling Index turned me on to was the Official Web Site of the International Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame. Hey, if you can't afford a trip to St. Louis this week to visit the museum in person, a quick visit to the web-site is the next best thing. Although I loved the interesting facts and memorabilia, my favorite Museum page was the on-line bowling quiz. Your score is tabulated on a bowling score sheet-my score was only 150! You receive an "open" for every incorrect answer and of course a "strike" if you are right. One question surprised me-they ask what year the only sanctioned "900" series was bowled, but they never provide the name of the bowler who shot the honor score! If you know the answer, you can enlighten me by e-mailing me at: SKUZME@aol.com. Visit the museum on-line at: www.Bowlingmuseum.com and see if you can top my quiz score!

Bowling is the second highest participation sport in the world, and quite popular as a sport and entertainment. With more and more Bowling Alley's opening in different parts of the country, this has given a fillip to the leisure business in general and FRCs in particular.
Bowling is already a medal sport in the Asian and Commonwealth games and is expected to gain recognition as a medal sport in the Olympics in the near future.
Bowling has always been a popular activity and is well on the way to becoming an Olympic Sport. At the summer games in Seoul and Barcelona, international competitions of the world's best players took place and last summer in Atlanta, athletes from all over the globe sought relaxation and enjoyment in the Olympic Village's bowling centre.

The Sport of Homer Simpson
Rediscovering Bowling On the Internet
By Neil Abt
One Sunday afternoon this summer, my friend and I were looking for something different to do. After unsuccessfully coming up with an "exciting" idea, we decided to go bowling.
‘Big Ears’ and ‘Golden Gate’ are nicer terms for a 4-6-7-10 split.
Neither of us had bowled in many years, and we quickly realized we weren't any good. Still, we had a much better time than we expected.
Several weeks later, we wondered whether there were good bowling sites on the Internet. Bowling definitely isn't a glamorous sport. On television, figures like Al Bundy and Homer Simpson are bowling's best spokesmen.
Between the two of us, we couldn't name one bowler, and it's not even an Olympic sport that would give us reason to watch it once every four years. Still, we were in for a big surprise when we decided to go surfing for bowling. The official site of the Professional Bowlers Association was the first place we looked for news on the best bowlers in the world. There are stories about the latest results and standings from men's and senior's tournaments, and links to bios on the bowlers. Every month there are journal articles discussing topics such as why bowling should be an Olympic sport, and how wrong it was not too include any bowling movies in the all-time top 100 movies list.
There are instant polls, a chat room, membership information and several good bowling links listed down the right column.

Early History
Rolling a ball to knock down targets has been the object of a number of games, at various times and in various parts of the world. The implements for such a game have been found in an Egyptian tomb that's more than 7,000 years old, and a sort of bowling has been popular among Polynesian Islanders for at least several centuries. But the modern sport of bowling, which seems distinctly American and very secular, probably grew out of a German religious ceremony. In the 3rd century AD, every German peasant carried a Kegel, a club similar to the Irish shillelagh, for protection. It became a customary test of faith in many churches for the parishioner to set up his Kegel as a target, representing the heathen, and then roll a stone in an attempt to knock it down. If he succeeded, he was considered free of sin. Bowling eventually moved out of the church and became a popular secular sport, with a wooden ball replacing the stone and multiple pins (from as few as three to as many as seventeen) replacing the single Kegel. There are several references to bowling in Germany during the Middle Ages. Berlin and Cologne in 1325 set a limit on the amount that could be bet on a bowling match. A 1463 feast in Frankfurt featured bowling, along with a venison dinner. And the winner of a 1518 competition in Breslau was awarded an ox.

Southern Lady Jaguars Selected For First NCAA Bowling Championships
By SU Sports Information
Baton Rouge, La. - The eight-team field competing for the inaugural NCAA National Collegiate Bowling Championship was announced today by the National Collegiate Women's Bowling Committee, and the three-time defending SWAC Champion, the Southern Lady Jaguars, made the field.
Texas Southern University and the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority will co-host the championship, which will be held April 8-10 at the Emerald Bowl in Houston, Texas.
The field includes: Central Missouri State University, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Metropolitan Campus, University of Maryland, Eastern Shore, University of Nebraska, Lincoln, New Jersey City University, Sacred Heart University, Southern University, Baton Rouge, and Winston-Salem State University. All eight teams were selected at-large.
The competition begins with each team bowling seven regular games along with three Baker games for a qualifying total. The Baker format allows five team members to follow each other in order, each bowling a complete frame until a complete (10 frame) game is bowled.
Based on the pinfall of the qualifying round, the teams are placed in a double-elimination bracket. Teams compete against each other in a best-of-seven Baker-style bowling competition.

How Did Synchronized Swimming Become an Olympic Sport?
Emily Yoffe
Posted Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000, at 3:25 PM PT
Or for that matter this year's addition to the Olympic canon, its cousin, synchronized diving? There are three ways an activity can come into the Olympics: as a completely new sport; as a discipline, a branch of an existing sport; or as an event, a competition within a discipline. Triathlon is making its Olympic debut as a sport in Sydney; trampoline, which is part of gymnastics, is a new discipline; and women's pole vaulting the latest track and field event. Continue Article document.write(''); The first step to becoming a recognized sport of the Summer Games requires being organized into an international federation and having male participants in at least 75 countries on four continents and female participants in at least 40 countries on three continents. Once the International Olympic Committee votes to recognize a federation, the next step becomes a matter of lobbying. This is supposed to be done without the help of that now-banned Olympic activity, bribery. The IOC now recognizes 31 federations in everything from bridge to korfball (it is beyond Explainer's capacity to explain korfball Since the IOC wants to keep the number of athletes to the current 10,000 (!), it also helps if a sport has telegenic participants, which may be why triathlon made it from recognized international federation to medal sport in a swift 11 years, and bowling, recognized since 1979, languishes. (Their new Olympic marketing campaign slogan: "Strike Gold.")

A New Olympic Sport?
By Rod Mar, The Seattle Times
One of the best parts about covering an Olympics is the camaraderie that exists among the shooters.
At the end of any night, you can look around at your peers, and after the subject of "anyone up for a drink or a bite to eat?" comes, "what are you covering tomorrow?"
And the answer to that on any given day might be, "downhill", "ski-jumping", "speed-skating", or "aerials". It's a good thing no one asked me the night before my most unusual assignment of the games. I woke up before dawn to catch a media bus to park city, where we bribed a bus driver to drop us off at a resort called "the canyons" where I was the only photographer with a small group of reporters to cover.... Shovel racing.

80. CNN/SI - Century's Best - Your Take: Adding Events To The Olympics - Tuesday Aug
A number of other countries (especially Japan) are filled with bowlingenthusiasts, and if curling can be an olympic sport why not bowling?
http://www.cnnsi.com/centurys_best/news/1999/08/03/yourtake_olympicevents/
Your Take
What events should be added to the Olympics
Click here for more on this story Posted: Tuesday August 03, 1999 01:54 PM Instead of dueling for dollars, most users feel Tiger Woods and David Duval could play each other for Olympic gold. AP CNN/SI asked users what events they would like to see added to the Summer and Winter Olympics. Many of you thought a good start would be the addition of golf. Have a four-round Olympic golf tournament. The top 100 rated players in the world would participate. To make it attractive to the players, the winner would receive a five-year exemption for all four majors.
Bob Shiffrar Boston, MA Does it really matter? Adding events to the Olympics simply adds to the pile of events NBC wouldn't dare televise for fear of offending the purported gymnastics/track/ice-skating loving masses. Heaven forbid people are exposed to something new, different, and potentially interesting.
Brian Grivna Minneapolis, MN There is one sport I believe has the proper global exposure and is not gender specific that should be added. Although the entire world is not invited, one of the most compelling events going is the Ryder cup. You could have both team and individual events in Golf. How about Tiger Woods versus Paul Lawrie for the gold medal? Or Team Sweden taking on Team Canada for the women's team gold? It's been a long time since 1904.
Casey Jones Edmonton, Alberta
