The Basics
Curling, in its basic form, is a game combining the attributes of bowling, shuffleboard, billiards and chess. The playing surface is a sheet of ice approximately 150 feet by 15 feet by 3 inches. Unlike hockey ice, curling ice emphasizes extreme quality control. Compared to a hockey rink, curling ice is more level, has better temperature control, cleaner and void of nics and groves. This is done to ensure a more consistent playing surface when the stones are traveling. Also, before each game, the ice surface is sprinkled with a layer of pebbles. It is these pebbles that the curling stones rides upon. As the game progresses, the pebbling wears down into "keen tracks" tracks (which is a key factor when it comes to strategy and shot selection). The main piece of curling equipment is the stone. Curling stones are made of a very special granite called Blue Hone, which is known for its toughness and resiliency. Blue Hone granite only comes from one location, Ailsa Craig, Scotland. Due to the rarity of the material, and the fact that the craig is now a bird sanctuary, a set of 16 stones costs $12,000. Many clubs, unable to afford the high costs, now use refurnished stones with Blue Hone inserts (which extends the stone usefulness for another 30 years). The focal point of the curling stone is the concave bulge on the bottom which forms a circular lip. This lip, no bigger than half-an-inch, is the only part of the stone that is touching the ice. The slightest piece of debris, nic or grove on the ice can send the stone off course.

History
Wheelchair athletics has its roots in World War II. Before then, rehabilitation for any type of spinal cord injury was rare with fewer than one person in five surviving more than three years. World War II, responsible for sending many thousands to veteran's hospitals as paraplegics, quadriplegics, or amputees produced an awareness that more than medicine was needed to return some semblance of normalcy to, and extend the lives of, these men. A form of rehabilitative therapy was required that was more than just developing muscle tone from the exercise apparatus positioned above their bed. People whose body image and self-worth were devastated by their condition needed mental and physical therapy to restore a positive quality of life attitude. A difficult challenge, especially when it is realized there is no known cure for paralysis. In this chasm, athletics for wheelchair users was born. Wheelchair racing and wheelchair basketball preceded wheelchair bowling as a form of rehabilitative therapy. All succeeded in providing physical and emotional exercise. Social contact was stimulated.

comments michael what is your vote for the greatest rivalry? November 23, 2003 03:29 AM pavi One famous cricket rivalry is between England and Australia, who play for the "Ashes": The Oval (in London) in 1882, scene of one of the most historic Test matches ever played, and the beginning of a competition that is now known as 'The Ashes'. Lefthanders Peate and Barlow took advantage of a damp tricky wicket, which had seen two full days of rain before the start of play, bowling Australia out for only 63 runs in 2 ¼ hours. (Barlow 19 for 5, Peate 31 for 4). Spofforth who had fully regained fitness bowled unchanged and in the process took 7 wickets costing only 46 runs. Although a supreme effort, it was unavoidable that England would take a first innings lead and judging by the condition of the pitch, it was widely thought that it was a match winning lead. Massie and Bannerman began the second day in aggressive mood on what was again a wet pitch due to further downpours. The pair put on 66 for the first wicket; Massie scoring 55 in 45 minutes, Bannerman a supportive 13. Peate took another 4 wickets in the second innings to match his first innings tally and in so doing helped to restrict Australia's total to 122 all out. The total required could have and should have been considerably higher but for the intervention of Grace and 'that run out'. With the score on 114 Murdoch and Jones were set, (although only worth 15 runs their partnership was crucial) and when going for a run, Jones believed he had completed the run and left his crease to 'pat down' the wicket. Grace took the ball and took off the bails, appealed, and Jones was given out. Arguments ensued, Grace received a fair amount of abuse in the moments that followed the incident. This left England a mere 85 runs to win.

IOC Says All New Sports Must Include Women

By Stephen Wilson
Associated Press
Monday, February 2, 1998; 6:33 a.m. EST
If any new sports are added to future Olympics, they must include women's events, IOC president Juan Antonio Samaranch said today. "The Olympic movement is determined to make its contribution so that the 21st century marks the beginning of a new era for women in world sport,'' Samaranch said in opening the International Olympic Committee session on the eve of the Nagano Games. On Sunday, the IOC approved women's modern pentathlon for the 2000 Sydney Games. Women's weightlifting and women's water polo already are planned for Sydney. "The IOC has decided that any new sport wishing to be included in the Olympic program must comprise women's events,'' Samaranch said in a speech. The IOC gave provisional recognition last week to the federations representing sumo wrestling and bodybuilding. Wrestling and boxing, two male-only sports already in the summer games, are pushing to include women's events. Sydney officials said the move boosts the total proportion of female athletes to 42 percent, an increase of 5 percent over the previous record at the 1996 Atlanta Games.

http://www.nsspecialolympics.com/bowling.html
Bowling
Canadian Special Olympics recognizes both 5-Pin and 10-Pin Bowling as Official Sports, and hosts these at National Games. Nova Scotia is severely limited in the number of 5-Pin facilities across the Province, and the virtual non-existence of 10-Pin alleys. The majority of bowling facilities in Nova Scotia are "Candlepin" and as such, our athletes often train and compete in this discipline. Where possible, Nova Scotia Special Olympics encourages athletes to train and compete in 5-Pin facilities. In each year preceding a National Summer Games, all athletes will compete in an official 5-Pin facility, if they wish to be considered for advancement. As with all Special Olympic sports, we strongly encourage our coaches to obtain NCCP Certification, and strive to deliver the best quality sport programs.

If curling is in the Olympics, why not bowling? The International Bowling Federation wants bowling to be an Olympic medal event. The benefits, according to their FAQ , are: the objectivity of its scoring, its gender equity, and the appeal of an additional demographic not otherwise drawn to the Games. Sounds good to me.
posted by Prince Valium to Olympics at 4:32 PM CST (12 comments total) In curling you interact with your opponents' play, correct? In bowling you do not. If the activity itself isn't that exciting to watch, you need that direct interaction to heighten interest.
Croquet would be a more exciting spectator sport than bowling. And I used to be a regular bowler as a kid. Somehow I never started smoking, though...
posted by NortonDC at 5:09 PM CST on February 27 Yeah, sure, but can you drink in between frames? Or maybe to make it more interesting, should it be a requirement?
posted by at 5:17 PM CST on February 27 NortonDC: If interaction with opponents is a prerequisite to legitimacy, then downhill skiing, most track and field events, gymnastics, and figure skating are out.

As the president of FIQ, bowling's international ruling body, Jerry Koenig has fought to have the sport included in the Olympic Gamesbut that's not his top priority IN THE WORLD of bowling, Jerry Koenig has done it all. He's been a 200-average bowler, a proprietor in Shauno, Wis., legal counsel to the ABC, and chief executive officer of Team USA. Now he's into his second four-year term as president of the Federation Internationale des Quilleurs (FIQ), the ruling body of international bowling. And that's not all. Koenig can boast membership on several international and Olympic committees: the General Association of International Sports Federations, the Association of Recognized International Sports Federations, the International World Games Association, the United States Olympic Committee, the USOC National Governing Bodies Council, the USOC international relations committee, and the USOC legislation committee. From his home in Colorado Springscoincidentally, also the home of the United States Olympic CommitteeKoenig maintains contact with more than a hundred bowling federations around the globe, including some in such heretofore-unlikely places as China and Russia. BOWLING DIGEST caught up with him just after his return from Poland. We asked him to bring us up to date on the day-to-day workings of the FIQ and any progress bowling is making in his quest for Olympic recognition.

"I am amazed," said Jeremy, "at the people who ask for my autograph" Jeremy didn't disappoint the dozens of fans... who cheered him on as he shot yet another 300 game to add some excitement to the event. "The idea that we can all have such a great time bowling while raising thousands of dollars for a worthy cause like leukemia research gives me a really great feeling,"
October 21, 1997 Collegiate bowler registers "firsts" by Jan Leasure What Jeremy may not realize is that the tremendous visibility that he received under the spotlight of bowling the "900" has reflected in a most unique and positive way for the sport of bowling itself. Jeremy may unknowingly end up being the single-most positive catalyst that helps shine new respect on a sport that has traditionally fought for it's place to be viewed as more than a pizza and beer recreation. "I am amazed," said Jeremy, "at the people who ask for my autograph whenever I walk into a bowling center. It warms my heart when junior bowlers ask me questions about bowling and tell me that they would like to bowl as well as I do. I understand because I still feel this way about the pros that I admire like Amletto Monacelli. I almost couldn't believe it myself when I had the honor of conducting a junior bowling clinic with Amletto just prior to the Lima Ohio Regional in September at a local middle school. For me this was a dream come true."
