More victims of Title IX. n Mother's Day this Sunday, Debra Downey won't be relaxing at home with her family. Instead, she'll be on the campus of Bowling Green State University, wearing a " Save BG Track " T-shirt, handing out buttons, and otherwise getting her message out by lobbying parents of graduates and alumni. "From the look on his face I originally thought someone had died," Mrs. Downey recalls of the night of March 19, when her junior son, Drew, arrived home from school to tell his parents that his track team was being cut. In late March, Bowling Green State University announced that it would eliminate men's tennis, track, and swimming and diving. That's 16 scholarships cut and 55 student athletes affected. In recent years, Bowling Green has also eliminated men's wrestling and lacrosse. Division I hockey, football, and tennis all cost major money, Bowling Green explains, and so they just can't afford all their teams. But that's the thing about track — and what makes it such an odd sport to cut. As Eric Peterson, father of a senior on the track team — and who, while living in Kansas City a few years ago, helped run an inner-city summer program for track — points out: "It would cost the university very little to continue to support track." You don't

Bowling rd century AD, when German peasants who enjoyed the sport carried a club known as the kegel, not unlike the Irish shillelagh, for protection. Over time, wooden balls replaced stones and pins were substituted for the kegel. The Dutch developed bowling. By 1650 the sport encompassed nine pins set in a diamond pattern toward the end of a 90-foot lane (track). Tenpin bowling, which features a 60-foot lane and pins set in a triangle pattern, is believed to have derived from the Dutch version. Scoring for strikes and spares came about during the mid-century when heavier bottle-shaped pins replaced the earlier tall and slender version.
Bowling is free of drug and substance abuse. Scoring, based 100% on athletic performance, is objective and non-controversial. It is gender equal (49% female).

Walter Ray Williams Jr. Interview conducted by email on April 24, 1998. 15 Questions I ask Walter Ray! Question From Gary who signed the guestbook. The application form for the PBA says you must have signatures of three PBA members in good standing, who were the three PBA members who signed your application and how did you go about asking them? WR. "Gary, I don't remember who the 3 PBA members were, but they may have been a few of the members who I knew at the time. If I were you, I would ask a member who has seen you bowl. I have been asked by quite a few people to endorse them, but I have declined most of the requests since I have never seen them bowl. Good luck." 2.)Question from John Albrecht lives in Ellijay Georgia. How do you go about adjusting to the lanes so quickly as they change?" WR "John, adjusting to lanes quickly is something that comes from experience and lots of tournament play. To be competitive, you need to make these adjustments quickly. I would suggest playing in lots of tournaments so that you get experience in playing in different conditions. You also need to know when you make a good shot or not "

How to fix it? End it or...
Granted, this purge will lead to a lot fewer events in the winter games than in the summer ones. To rectify that discrepancy, some of the summer sports should be moved to winter. How about moving indoor volleyball to the summer? Than volleyball players could compete indoors in the winter games and on the beach in the summer. Basketball could also be moved to winter, as could boxing, wrestling, or any of the other 27 different versions of ass kicking that appear in the summer games.

Bowling Green in Winter
Bowling Green in Spring
The Bowling Green Where Broadway begins, at the intersection of State and Whitehall Streets lies Manhattan's Bowling Green, the oldest green park in the city. The area began as a cattle market and a place for parades. In 1733 it was converted into a bowling green, hence today's name. Until 1776 there was a statue here of George III surrounded by an iron fence. After the American declaration of independence had been published, New Yorkers pulled it down and usd the lead for ammunition. The Bowling Green eventually suffered the same fate as the statue. It 1914 it had to yield to a subway station and the playing greens were transferred to Central Park (pictured right). Today it is still an open space with a regular greenmarket.
History of the Sport Origins Some sort of bowling (there are many forms - boule bocce petanque , etc.) can be traced back to the Egyptians. And other sports developed from it - for instance Curling (now and Olympic sport) which is basically a winter version played on ice. The oldest Crown Green still played on is in Southampton, England. It has been in operation since since 1299 CE.

Future spot for architect's drawing!
The search is on. We have begun looking for land in central Pennsylvania to build a campus for the Institute. Our plan is described in more detail below. Eventually we anticipate that this campus will be one of the largest sports facilities in Pennsylvania.
The IISOH effectively has two divisions the Library and the Museum. The Board of Directors are seeking benefactor(s) to endow each division with a $25 million donation. An endowment will also be sought for the theatre in the amount of $25 million. The benefactor(s) will then be offered the opportunity to name the Library, Museum or theatre, subject to the final approval of the Board of Directors.
Go to the ENDOWMENTS page.

Our plans are to construct facilities on a campus approximately 300 acres in size. This will allow us have room for expansion in the decades to come as we increase the endowment and add sports facilities to the educational program. Sports fields are desirable in order to teach through participation and play. If we have a baseball field we can teach the history of baseball by playing a game using 1860 rules for 3 innings, then playing by modern rules for 3 innings. In the basement of the Museum we could have a bowling alley from the 1800's where the pins have to be set by hand, and right next to it have a modern bowling alley that is fully automated. Our visitors can go bowling either way. Consider the possibilities for each and every sport this means a lot of space is needed.

CURLING 101
by Timothy D. Jacques
In the United States, curing has a "Dr. Jeckle and Mr. Hyde" complex. Inside certain parts of the "ice- belt" (Great Lakes Region and New England), curling is an accepted alternative to the standard winter sports regimen of skiing, basketball, hockey and bowling. Outside of the "ice-belt", curling is almost unheard of due to a lack of facilities and by the ignorance of the mainstream media. Curling clubs also exist in CO, NE, WA, NC, SC, NJ, TX, and CA (but most of these are clubs don't have their own facility and must rent hockey ice). Since the Nagano Olympics, there have been numerous inquiries on starting new curling clubs. The lack of knowledge by the media was brilliantly demonstrated by CBS at the 1998 Winter Olympics. CBS's sloppy research revealed only 500 curlers in the United States (there are actually about 15,000 to 17,000) and that there were only a handful of clubs (there are over 120). Add on a few stereotyped misnomers and CBS came to the brilliant conclusion in early 1997 not to cover the sport. The only mention of curling came from a few information segments on "48 Hours" that were so biased and lopsided, it was more comedy than journalism. CBS also didn't score many points with the curling competitors as they frequently interrupted matches with their loud commentary (commentary they never used). Ironically, during the first week of the Olympics, when many outside events were snowed in, CBS decided to show figure skating practices and fluff pieces rather than show other events.
