Baton Rouge, La. - The eight-team field competing for the inaugural NCAA National Collegiate Bowling Championship was announced today by the National Collegiate Women's Bowling Committee, and the three-time defending SWAC Champion, the Southern Lady Jaguars, made the field.
Texas Southern University and the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority will co-host the championship, which will be held April 8-10 at the Emerald Bowl in Houston, Texas.
The field includes: Central Missouri State University, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Metropolitan Campus, University of Maryland, Eastern Shore, University of Nebraska, Lincoln, New Jersey City University, Sacred Heart University, Southern University, Baton Rouge, and Winston-Salem State University. All eight teams were selected at-large.
The competition begins with each team bowling seven regular games along with three Baker games for a qualifying total. The Baker format allows five team members to follow each other in order, each bowling a complete frame until a complete (10 frame) game is bowled.

For all of the major sports covered by NBC each of these Olympics, IDS provided state-of-the-art broadcast interface systems. These systems simultaneously process scoring and timing information from the official results system and from the official timing system. This data was made available instantly on the NBC graphics systems for broadcast and was also databased for later access. Due to the time difference between Sydney Australia and the United States at the Summer Olympics, NBC produced a large amount of broadcast material on tape. This required an interface system that let NBC go back to a completed event and access information at any point in time during the event. The IDS broadcast interface used the official results to create an event database. This gave NBC the flexibility to edit previously recorded events and insert graphics as if they were receiving live data.

All the World's an Olympic Sport
by jacknose February 25, 2002 I hereby submit to the wisdom of Vince McMahon, Mark Burnett, and Gatorade. Life is a sport, sport is entertainment, and entertainment is life. I will drink it up from here on out. I will no longer be a sports snob. I will no longer have standards. I will no longer proclaim that curling and ice dancing are not sports. I will no longer question golf, billiards, bowling, surfing, auto racing, snowboarding, and figure skating. I will no longer suggest that sports require athleticism. I will no longer proclaim that judges are for pageants. In the spirit of my transformation, I will petition the IOC for the following “sports” to be included in future Olympic Games: Professional Wrestling. I cannot think of a better sport for the Olympic stage than professional wrestling. Fixed outcomes will be assumed, but we, the audience, will gladly accept the pretentiousness as long as the costumes are tight, the insults are loud, and the faux fighting is raw. Winners will be determined by television ratings. Rubik’s Cube Race.

A BIOMECHANICAL AND PHYSIOLOGICAL study has determined that bowling is an Olympic-level, accuracy-based sport. The comprehensive studycompleted by Dr. Ben Johnson, the former director of the Georgia State Center for Sports Medicine, Science and Technologywas commissioned by the Federation Internationale des Quilleurs (FIQ). It concludes that "much like tennis, running, equestrian, table tennis, basketball, and many other Olympic sports, those who participate [in bowling] for social, recreational, or fitness masons do so at a level far below the Olympic standard." Analyzing bowlers of varying ability, Johnson determined that "elite bowlers possess extraordinary mental skills, concentration, and intensity of focus." He measured technique, flexibility, and strength under competitive conditions with a multi-camera biomechanical motion analysis system. This process determined bowling kinematic measures such as ball velocity, body center of mass velocity, shoulder angles and rotational speeds, and trunk and lead leg knee angles. While beginning and intermediate bowlers displayed measurable inconsistency and ineffectiveness, there was a marked contrast in bowlers whose average scores ranged from 206 to 230 points per game. The elite bowlers were found "to have [exceptional] coordination, heightened kinesthetic proprioceptive awareness, biomechanical precision, mental skills, concentration, and focus."

Perhaps news travels slowly in some part of the world, or perhaps the new President of the federation that heads international bowling, the Fédération Internationale des Quilleurs (FIQ) Steve Hontiveros, has not communicated with past president Gerald Koenig on the matter, or maybe secret talks are going on that will change the decisions that the IOC made in 2002, and bowling will be added to the Olympic schedule in 2008. Or probably not. A statement from Hontiveros that came out today stating that new efforts will be made to include the discipline in the 2008 games in Beijing, with Hontiveros claiming a there is a big chance that bowling, wushu or both will be added to the 2008 games. The notion goes against all indications the IOC has sent out over the past several years, and gives false hope to the practitioners of the game. In 2002 the IOC made it clear that the "O

Inquirer News Service THE RECENT victory of CJ Suarez in the 2003 AMF Bowling World Cup in Honduras where more than 80 countries competed for honors showed once again that the Filipino is second to no one in tenpin bowling a sport that requires natural talent, fierce determination and strong personal discipline to succeed. Unfortunately, even though CJ's smashing triumph gave the godforsaken country a wholesome image before the eyes of the world, his amazing feat will not be sufficiently recognized by this government because the country's one and only law for sporting heroes Republic Act 9064 provides incentives only to Filipino athletes whose achievements were accomplished in quadrennial competitions which are sanctioned by the International Olympic Committee such as the Olympics, Asian and Southeast Asian Games. There is no law that will reward achievers in annual and biannual competitions for non-Olympic sports such as bowling, billiards, golf and chess.

Olympic Quest Frequently Asked Questions What is "Strike Gold?"
"Strike Gold" is the marketing theme created by FIQ to characterize the quest for Bowling's inclusion into the Olympics. Under the umbrella of "Strike Gold," the FIQ and its member federations will undertake opportunities to maximize the recognition of Bowling as a potential Olympic sport. This website is one such opportunity. Why should Bowling be included in the Olympic programme? Bowling is among the largest participatory sports in the world. Bowling is contested on all five continents. There are 110 recognized member federations of the FIQ. Because of this tremendous participation, Bowling has an unparalleled yet untapped grassroots following. One of the goals of the International Olympic Committee is the widest possible promotion of the Olympic ideals. Bowling can help bring the Olympic ideal to millions of people worldwide. It will also offer significant potential for future marketing income. Other important factors to consider: Gender equity is important to the IOC—46 percent of Bowling's participants are women. On equal playing conditions, men and women are evenly matched. The only other sport where that has happened is Equestrian.
