How it All Began

Timeline

How it All Began
The concept of Special Olympics grew out of an idea conceived by Dr. Frank Hayden, a professor at McMaster University. That concept was introduced to the Canadian Special Olympics as a competitive platform for persons with a mental disability. The first national Special Olympic Games were held in 1969 and by the time the second national event took place, a total of 1500 athletes from every province had committed themselves to competition.
To meet the growing interest and needs of Canadian's with mental disabilities, the Canadian Special Olympics was formed in 1974. Today, all provinces and one Territory have official associations. Across the country, more than 16,000 Canadians participate in Special Olympics programs, over 1200 of which are registered with the Nova Scotia Special Olympics organization.

Bowling
Canadian Special Olympics recognizes both 5-Pin and 10-Pin Bowling as Official Sports, and hosts these at National Games. Nova Scotia is severely limited in the number of 5-Pin facilities across the Province, and the virtual non-existence of 10-Pin alleys. The majority of bowling facilities in Nova Scotia are "Candlepin" and as such, our athletes often train and compete in this discipline. Where possible, Nova Scotia Special Olympics encourages athletes to train and compete in 5-Pin facilities. In each year preceding a National Summer Games, all athletes will compete in an official 5-Pin facility, if they wish to be considered for advancement. As with all Special Olympic sports, we strongly encourage our coaches to obtain NCCP Certification, and strive to deliver the best quality sport programs.

BRISTOL, CT. As we continue our year-long look back at Black sport pioneers, we focus on the world of track and field. William Hubbard was the first Black athlete to win an Olympic gold medal in an individual event, while Eddie Tolan was the first black athlete to win two Olympic gold medals. We take a look at both of their accomplishments starting with Hubbard. A SUPERSTAR
William DeHart Hubbard was born on November 25, 1903 in the Walnut Hills section of Cincinnati, Ohio. He was not only athletic but also intelligent, with a four-year scholastic average of 90. Hubbard was part of the Golden Age of Sports and when people started using the word "superstar." He was the national long jump champion of the 1920s who was also experienced in the sprints and triple jump. A University of Michigan graduate, he competed in both the 1924 and 1928 Olympic Games. His long jump victory in the 1924 Paris Olympics made him the first Black athlete to win an Olympic gold medal in an individual event. His winning long jump of 24 ft.-5 inches was somewhat overshadowed by the performance of U.S. teammate John Legendre the day before.
