San Diego’s four "Team del Sol" synchronized skating teams ( senior intermediate teen introductory adult ) are based in San Diego, one of Southern California’s most popular vacation destinations. Get more information about the sport of synchronized skating (such as rules and regulations, divisions, elements, and the new name change) HERE ! Formerly known as the Icettes (senior/junior), Sun Blazers (novice/intermediate), and Starlites (juvenile), our teams changed their name to Team del Sol in 1997 to reflect San Diego’s Spanish heritage. Team del Sol translates from Spanish to "Team of the Sun."
With an average year-round temperature of 70 degrees, ice skating is uncommon in San Diego. The availability of surfing, volleyball, golfing and other year-round sports often makes it difficult to find skaters with the ability to perform at the National and International level, however we have built a precision program that has grown and strengthened since it began in the late 1970's as a "drill team." We competed in the very first Nationals, which was held in Bowling Green, Ohio in 1984, and we've been going strong ever since! We have been Pacific Coast Gold Medallists since 1985. The Juvenile team achieved the Bronze medal at the National Championships in 1986. Since that time we went through a period of building depth. Now, team members that were on our juvenile team have developed into masterful senior division skaters, giving the quality needed to perform at the national and international levels. The goal has been, and continues to be, to develop a solid foundation to achieve national titles in all four divisions and to compete in the international arena.

The Historical Perspective of the
National Disability Sports Alliance
The impact of sports on today's society was never more evident than during the XXVII Olympiad in Sydney, Australia. The 2000 Summer Olympic Games hosted the world's finest athletes and brought together people and nations through the inspiration and talent of the competitors. The remarkable human achievement that we witness every four years during the Games are testimony to their importance. The world embraces the talented and successful athlete.
The 2000 Olympic Games, spectacular in its diversity, also offered
numerous spectators a glimpse of tomorrow. Athletes with physical disabilities were provided the opportunity to compete at the same event sites as their non-disabled counterparts and were housed in the same Olympic Village. The 2000 PARALYMPIC GAMES took place in Sydney, Australia, exactly three weeks after the Summer Olympic Games.
Participation in the Olympic Games happens only after a sport has developed a strong international acceptance. Sports for the physically challenged athlete have only recently started to receive this universal acknowledgment. The aforementioned PARALYMPIC GAMES brought together over 3,500 athletes from more than 120 countries. The international contenders in this event competed in 24 different sports that included track and field, swimming, powerlifting, wrestling, archery, cycling, soccer, table tennis, and wheelchair basketball. In each event athletes are classified by the nature and degree of their physical disability. These programs have now evolved from a fun and games recreational philosophy into highly structured and meaningful competitions at the international level.

Sixth JPH Lecture
May 20, 2002
Dave Wottle, whose dramatic finish in the 1972 Munich Olympics earned him a Gold Medal in the 800-meter-run, will be the featured speaker Monday, May 20 in the John Paul Hammerschmidt Lecture Series at North Arkansas College. His lecture, which is open to the public free of charge, will start at 7 p.m. in the Conference Center of the John Paul Hammerschmidt Business and Conference Center on Northark’s South Campus. During his track and cross country career at Bowling Green State University, Wottle earned All-American honors eight times while breaking the four-minute-mile no less than 18 times. In the 1972 Olympic Trials, he qualified for the Olympic Games in both the 800 meters and in the 1,500 meters. His performance in the 800 meters was especially memorable as he tied the world record with a time of 1:43.3. The following year he became the third fastest miler of all time by running a 3:53.3 mile. Wottle was inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1980. Although his Gold Medal victory in the Munich Olympics was one of the closest finishes in Olympic history, most people remember Wottle more for the tattered golf cap he wore during the race than for the race itself. Dave’s talk at Northark, entitled “The Winning Attitude,” will focus on the need for hard work, goal setting, confidence, concentration, and competitive spirit in the life of a successful person.

was the largest peacetime event in history; only world century inventions, nor arevendors unique to the Olympics. How about a professional bowling tournament?
http://www.ncaba.org/bowlmag/archives/9611donw.htm
THE WRIGHT WAY / Don Wright
November 1996

Should bowling forget about the Olympics? No!
Is it just me, or are there others out there who see a need for a vision in bowling and not just business as usual? I am referring to some recent writings by people who are supposed to be bowling experts. Above, John Jowdy has written a lengthy editorial on why bowling should forget about the Olympics. It made about as much sense as Mort Luby's article in Bowlers Journal International a while back that the Internet is a primary reason for the demise of bowling membership. Jowdy begins by saying that bowling should take the same approach that golf has taken and simply say, "We do not need the Olympics." The Olympics is used to showcase athletes from around the world and provide exposure that they would not receive otherwise. Golf doesn't have to worry about that. Name a Saturday or Sunday or a network that doesn't give you golf ad nauseam. Bowling, on the other hand, comes to us weeks later in a wonderful format called tape delay. Bowling experts should never compare bowling and golf. Bowling will never be able to compete with beautiful outdoor courses, the county club attitude, and, of course, the prize money.
