Bowling is the second highest participation sport in the world, and quite popular as a sport and entertainment. With more and more Bowling Alley's opening in different parts of the country, this has given a fillip to the leisure business in general and FRCs in particular.
Bowling is already a medal sport in the Asian and Commonwealth games and is expected to gain recognition as a medal sport in the Olympics in the near future.
Bowling has always been a popular activity and is well on the way to becoming an Olympic Sport. At the summer games in Seoul and Barcelona, international competitions of the world's best players took place and last summer in Atlanta, athletes from all over the globe sought relaxation and enjoyment in the Olympic Village's bowling centre.

STANLEY STANCZYK Home Museum Stanley Stanczyk STANLEY STANCZYK A Survivor of the Fittest By DON HORKEY It wouldn't be accurate to describe Stanley Stanczyk as a "Polish Charles Atlas." He was much, much more. Atlas was a bodybuilding devotee who made a fortune peddling his philosophy of physical fitness through mail orders. Kids of two or three generations ago may recall the ads in magazines or comic books relating how a 90-pound weakling, fed up with getting sand kicked in his face by a bully, gained his vengeance by becoming a disciple of Atlas' "dynamic tension" fitness program. But for all of his physical perfection, Atlas didn't win six consecutive world championships in weightlifting or a Gold Medal and a Silver Medal in the Olympics. Stanley Stanczyk did. He became a weightlifter as a matter of survival growing up in the rough and tough Polish neighborhoods on Detroit's west side. "We were so poor," recalled Stanczyk, "my clothes were old and tattered. The sisters (at St. Hedwig School, which he attended for eight years) used to send me home."

The 38-year-old lefthander was the only bowler and one of four women named to a "Dream Team" of legendary athletes by the Detroit 300 History Advisors, a select committee affiliated with the official Detroit 300 civic celebrations. "Dream Team" members, announced to the public July 18 prior to the start of the New York Yankees/Detroit Tigers baseball game, were chosen for their ability to serve as role models as well as for athletic prowess. Sill's "teammates" include such august superstars as speed skater Sheila Young, a triple-medallist at the 1976 Winter Olympic Games; Dave Bing, an NBA All-Star point guard for the Detroit Pistons; boxing icon Joe Louis, Detroit Lions quarterback Bobby Layne, and all-time hockey great Gordie Howe of the Detroit Red Wings.

The original Stardust Bowl was built by Tishner Construction Company. It was owned and operated by Jim Dietzen. The bowling center boasted twelve lanes and was located on North 10th Street in Noblesville. The center featured AMF's latest pinsetters, ball returns and seating. Noblesville was on the bowling map. Talmage Massey was our first manager. Charles Cooper became owner, operator of the center in 1963. He named Noel Revis manager in 1969. Noel was our manager until May of 1985, and is still part of the Stardust team today. The center was expanded to 24 lanes in 1973. On May 5, 1999, Coopers Stardust Bowl hosted REGGIE BOWL. Reggie Miller of the Indiana Pacers hosted a Celebrity Bowling Party with members of the Pacers, Colts, US Olympic Team, musical talent NSYNC along with national TV personalities. The Fund Raiser was for the Reggie Miller Foundation which helps Burn Victims and their families. The event raised more than $150,000. This year we held the REGGIE BOWL on April 4. We were able to double last years donations by raising $300,000 for the burn victims at Riley Hospital and Burn Camps. In the future Coopers Stardust Bowl intends to be on the cutting edge of the bowling industry, to give our bowlers an establishment they are proud to call their "BOWLING HOME." Our company motto is "Whatever it takes to make our customer happy and satisfied is the responsibility of all employees."

The Sports Illustrated Olympic Daily is published in Salt Lake City and available in event venues and on newsstands for 16 straight days during the 2002 Winter Games. Here are some sights and scenes from today’s edition. Going Four Gold
At 35, Germany’s Georg Hackl is sliding for Olympic history
Georg Hackl is 5'8" tall and shaped like a football, his 179 pounds spread over his frame as if it were a warm layer of soft, freshly baked bread. He can't run fast, jump high or lift massive amounts of weight, and if you had to identify the sport in which he is an international star, you would guess bowling, or maybe bass fishing. He is the pudgy neighbor mowing his lawn in tight gym shorts, the social studies teacher in polyester Sansabelts, the little kid who could never get a game. Yet Hackl, a 35-year-old German, can make Olympic history tomorrow by winning his fourth consecutive gold medal in luge. (He had the fastest practice run of the day yesterday; competition opens at 4 p.m. today with two runs at Utah Olympic Park.) No athlete in Winter Olympics history has won the same event four times in a row beloved U.S. speed skater Bonnie Blair is among several to have won three straight and if Hackl had been half a second faster in Calgary in 1988, he would be gunning for number five. Just as im portant as his records, his presence demands that we reconsider precisely what makes a person an athlete. Burning Question Q: Would a hockey player be competitive in speed skating or short track?

CROSS-COUNTRY
It's not boring; it's a magnificent feat of fitness and endurance
Cross-country aficionados bummed over sparse coverage will get their fill of snowy swooshing this year. NBC has staked out over 30 camera positions along busy Soldier Hollow's trails and plans to televise more of the races than ever before. (The relatively action-packed relays air on NBC February 17 and 21.) But the skiing isn't exactly hair-raising, what with its lack of leaping, speeding, and spinning. The sport's want of "wow factor" is offset by its focus on fitness and endurance, says Paul Robbins, a spokesman for the U.S. ski team. Per Elofsson of Sweden, the defending World Cup champ, trains by running through swamps and roller skiing up mountains. Russia, Norway, Finland, and Italy are, with Sweden, on track to repeat past victories. The U.S. team is the strongest since 1984, Robbins says, but the Arctic countries live for this stuff. -Samantha Levine NORDIC COMBINED

History of Cricket
The First Test Matches
On 15 March, 1877, James Lillywhite's English side lined up against a team of Australians at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in the first match between international sides. This was the first Test match . Australia batted first and Charles Bannerman became the first Test centurion by scoring 165 in the first innings before retiring hurt with a split index finger. Australia scored 245 and 104, England 196 and 108. Australia won the first Test match by 45 runs. Everyone had been expecting England to win. England had the best players in the world, and Australia was but a colony where the game had begun being played only recently. The result caused a sensation. A second Test was played beginning on 31 March, but this time the Australians could not match their performance of that first game. England won by 4 wickets, and the first Test series was drawn 1-1. But the fact that it wasn't the whitewash everyone had been expecting made the tour a roaring success, and it was agreed that further international tours should take place. The next tour was an English side led by Lord Harris visiting Australia in 1878-79. The
