History Nationally Special Olympics started in June of 1963, when Eunice Kennedy Shriver started a summer day camp for children and adults who were physically and mentally handicapped. Shriver is the executive vice-president of the Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Foundation. She is the honorary chairman of Special Olympics. In 1968, Special Olympics International was established as a non-profit charitable organization under the laws of the District of Columbia. The National Association of Retarded Citizens, The Council for Exceptional Children and the American Association of Mental Deficiency pledge their support. This was the first systematic effort to provide sports training and athletic competition for individuals with mental retardation. Special Olympics growth has been spectacular since those first years. There are accredited Special Olympics programs in more than 144 countries with new programs continually developing. In the United States there are established chapters in all 50 states. Back to top Locally In Elko the Special Olympics chapter has been quite a success and the program has helped a tremendous amount of our local physically and mentally challenged citizens. The Special Olympics program director in Elko is Sue Davis. Sue is an energetic and caring mother and is also the program director at the Vitality Center which rehabilitates dependency problems. Mrs. Davis has a bright, energetic daughter named Cari that is a competitor in the local and state games. Special Olympics is a non-profit organization and has fund raisers every year to help pay for equipment, travel expenses to tournaments etc. A great example of this is the "Muddy Ball" game every year that is a messy good time all to raise money for the local Special Olympics.

The JPH Lecture Series Olympic Champion Dave Wottle Will Present Sixth JPH Lecture May 20, 2002 Dave Wottle, whose dramatic finish in the 1972 Munich Olympics earned him a Gold Medal in the 800-meter-run, will be the featured speaker Monday, May 20 in the John Paul Hammerschmidt Lecture Series at North Arkansas College. His lecture, which is open to the public free of charge, will start at 7 p.m. in the Conference Center of the John Paul Hammerschmidt Business and Conference Center on Northark’s South Campus. During his track and cross country career at Bowling Green State University, Wottle earned All-American honors eight times while breaking the four-minute-mile no less than 18 times. In the 1972 Olympic Trials, he qualified for the Olympic Games in both the 800 meters and in the 1,500 meters. His performance in the 800 meters was especially memorable as he tied the world record with a time of 1:43.3. The following year he became the third fastest miler of all time by running a 3:53.3 mile. Wottle was inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1980. Although his Gold Medal victory in the Munich Olympics was one of the closest finishes in Olympic history, most people remember Wottle more for the tattered golf cap he wore during the race than for the race itself. Dave’s talk at Northark, entitled “The Winning Attitude,” will focus on the need for hard work, goal setting, confidence, concentration, and competitive spirit in the life of a successful person.

History of the Games Governor Atiyeh and wife Dolores arrive by helicopter landing in Portland Civic Stadium to help open the inaugural State Games of Oregon. Earlier at the state capitol, Governor Atiyeh lit and handed the State Games of Oregon torch to then Senator John Kitzhaber. After 3 miles the torch was handed off to the State Games relay team. The torch was carried to the opening ceremonies in Civic Stadium in time for torchlighter Robin Marks, former Queen of Rosaria and outstanding track athlete, to light the cauldron after Governor Atiyeh officially opened the Games. The inaugural State Games of Oregon games offered 11 sports throughout the Portland Metro area. 4,003 athletes participated and endorsed the concept of an Olympic style multi-sport festival. Three sports were added to the 1987 (figure skating, boardsailing, shooting) and limited regional competition was introduced in Bend, Medford and Eugene. Some 5,000 athletes participated. The torch relay began in Salem with Attorney General Dave Frohnmayer handing the torch off to the State Games relay team. Governor Neil Goldschmidt "opened" the State Games. Six new sports were added to the State Games raising the total to 20 sports. Newly added sports included: Bowling, Cycling, Roller Skating, Rowing, Springboard Diving and Synchronized Swimming. the sport of Bowling drew nearly 5,000 competitors for it's inaugural year.
