Although Cyberplex Africa was started in 1999, its roots go back to the frontier days of the Internet in Africa. In 1994, fellow MIT graduates Karanja Gakio and Roy Steiner developed the idea and original business plan for Africa Online, now the most widespread Internet Service Provider in Africa.
Another MIT graduate Dudzai Saburi was Africa Online's first employee and was instrumental in developing the first real African portal on the Net. Karanja was the technical mastermind behind Africa Online's roll out across Africa and Roy helped set up the Zimbabwe office in 1997.
When Africa Online changed ownership, Roy and Dudzai left the company. With Karanja's encouragement they set up Cyberplex Africa. Cyberplex Africa's foundation was based on the vision of creating a world-class web development company that would contribute to Africa's place on the Net. The name was inspired by Cyberplex Interactive Media in North America - a company set up by two of Roy's friends.

ANC Botswana Mission
History
Introduction When the Nationalist Government banned the African National Congress (ANC) on 8 April 1960, the ANC began operating underground in South Africa. Outside the country the ANC started to establish itself as the official voice of South Africa's voteless masses. By the 1970s recognition of the ANC's legitimacy was growing, not only amongst the multiplicity of non-governmental anti-apartheid organizations, but also among foreign governments. The first missions were opened in London, Accra, Cairo, and Dar-es-Salaam. By 1980, the ANC had offices and representatives in 32 countries. The external missions worked to win support for the overthrow of apartheid by promoting the cause of the ANC and urging international economic pressure against the South African government. The missions also provided assistance to South African exiles. Following the banning of the organisation, Oliver Tambo, President General of the ANC left South Africa to head of the ANC's external operations. On 2 February 1990 the bans on the ANC and other political organisations were lifted. A process of negotiations between the unbanned organisations and the South African government ensued. In 1992 the ANC instructed its missions to collate and box their records for shipment to South Africa. These records were to form the basis of the official archives of the ANC, from which a true history of the ANC's role in the struggle against apartheid could be written.

Useful information

No accurate records exist of the first ever inhabitants of Botswana, although tool fragments and other evidence of human activity have been uncovered which are thought to be around 27,000 years old. The Basarwa, also known as San Bushmen, were among the first recognised people to inhabit the country although only 40,000 remain today.
The 17th Century brought the Tswana, or Batswana from the South, a Bantu people related to the Sotho of Transvaal and Lesotho. The Tswana now make up over 50% of Botswana's population and the remaining peoples have been heavily absorbed into this culture. This may be one of the main reasons for Botswana's cultural and social stability over the last two centuries.
As well as the San, minority tribes include the 25,000 Mbanderu, cousins of the Namibian Herero tribe who fled Namibia following the German conquest in the 1890's. The striking traditional costume of these people with large flowing skirts and elaborate headdresses is based on that of the 19th century missionaries wives.

BOTSWANA

U.S.: Access to Generic HIV/AIDS Drugs at Risk

The U.S. government is threatening to obstruct low-income countries’ access to generic HIV/AIDS drugs approved by the World Health Organization (WHO), Human Rights Watch said today. The United States will convene a conference in Botswana on Monday that may challenge the WHO’s approval of generic copies of patented AIDS drugs.

    Bush Trip to Africa

The Bush Administration's human rights agenda in Africa has been primarily focused on Zimbabwe and, to a lesser extent, Sudan. The primacy of the U.S. war on terrorism has meant that the United States has given even less attention to Africa than might otherwise have been expected. In the few African countries that the administration believes are strategically valuable, particularly in the Horn of Africa, the United States has often de-emphasized human rights issues.
