By Alastair Leithead
BBC, Southern Africa
The Botswana Government has denied that an increase in diamond prospecting in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve is anything to do with the forced removal of thousands of indigenous people from their ancestral land last year. The government says it wanted to provide better services to the Bushmen The San, or Bushmen, were moved out of the reserve, the government says, in order to give them access to better public services. But the London-based pressure group Survival International says their removal was linked to diamond mining and believes that now the people have gone, the prospecting has begun. Only a handful of bushmen still live in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, an area in Botswana the size of Denmark, after the last 2,000 indigenous people were moved from their homes last year. 'Terrorists' The government cut off their water supplies and took them by truck to permanent settlements outside the reserve in order, it said, to provide them with proper public services.

Home Profile Partners AIDS in Botswana ... Image Library Partners Public/Private Partnerships The Government of Botswana The Government of Botswana With the highest reported HIV prevalence rate in the world, Botswana is experiencing the most devastating pandemic to hit southern Africa in recent memory. An estimated 260 000 adult Batswana in a population of 1,6 million are now living with HIV/AIDS. Without affordable and accessible treatment, most of them will develop AIDS and die within a decade. We need the support of the global community to ensure our survival. To this end, cultivating public/private partnerships is a priority on Botswana's HIV/AIDS agenda. ACHAP is an integral part of Botswana's comprehensive approach to the HIV epidemic. As a nation, we have relied on financial discipline, prudent economic management and frugality to prosper. These are irrelevant as far as HIV/AIDS is concerned. HIV/AIDS is reversing the many gains we have made in social and economic development. Since the first AIDS case was reported in our country some 16 years ago, the human toll has been staggering. AIDS is a tragedy experienced by almost every family and community as well as the nation at large. One is either infected or affected. I have lost relatives. Everybody has. When you have not yet lost a child, you just consider yourself lucky.

... Africa /Botswana BOTSWANA History and Government
History: Between the seventh and 13th centuries, parts of Botswana were populated by thriving agricultural communities. In the 14th century, these communities came under the control of powerful Tswana dynasties originating in the region to the east, which is now South Africa’s Gauteng Province. A further series of migrations followed the break-up of the main Tswana kingdoms, the Hurutshe and the Kwena, from the late 17th century. These migrants were firmly established in the southern part of Botswana and had established a powerful military state controlling hunting, cattle-breeding and copper mining by the 18th century. The early 19th century brought another period of upheaval, as peoples from the north, dislocated by slavery and the collapse of their local economies, moved to new territory. The Kololo were followed by the Ndebele. They were quickly succeeded by British colonialists and Boer settlers. The local rulers, notably the Tswana King Sechele, who ruled between 1829 and 1892, allied themselves with the British against the Boers. In a form of sub-contracted or privatised colonialism characteristic of the British Empire, Botswana was eventually brought under full British colonial control in 1890, by the British South Africa Company, who supervised the territory and which became known as Bechuanaland Protectorate.

Botswana is one of the countries that has been hardest hit by the worldwide HIV epidemic. In 2004 there were an estimated 260,000 people in Botswana living with HIV. This, in a country with a total population of 1.6 million, gives Botswana a prevalence rate of 36.5%, the second highest in the world after Swaziland. Life expectancy is only 39 years, while it would have been 72, if it were not for AIDS . There are around 60,000 registered orphans in the country but it is feared that Botswana will have about 200,000 orphans in 2010 if the current situation is not reversed. In an address to the UN General Assembly in 2001, the President of Botswana, Festus Mogae, said 'we are threatened with extinction. People are dying in chillingly high numbers. It is a crisis of the first magnitude.' Botswana has become the first African country to aim to provide antiretroviral therapy to its citizens on a national scale. It is believed by many that if any country in Africa is going to succeed in implementing such a comprehensive HIV/AIDS care and treatment programme, then it is Botswana. The country has enjoyed a period of unbroken peace since 1966 and has become relatively prosperous due to its diamond mines. The annual per capita income is US$3,300, amongst the highest in the area. The History of HIV/AIDS in Botswana Botswana's first AIDS case was reported in 1985. Then AIDS was seen as a disease that affected male homosexuals in the West and people from other African countries.
