    Government
Botswana has a flourishing multiparty constitutional democracy. Each of the elections since independence has been freely and fairly contested and has been held on schedule. The country's small white minority and other minorities participate freely in the political process. There are two main rival parties and a number of smaller parties. In national elections in 1999, the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) won 33 of 40 contested National Assembly seats, the Botswana National Front (BNF) won 6, and the Botswana Congress Party (BCP) won 1 seat. An additional 4 seats are held by individuals appointed by the President; all 4 are currently held by the ruling BDP. The opposition out-polled the ruling BDP in most urban areas. The openness of the country's political system has been a significant factor in Botswana's stability and economic growth. General elections are held at least every 5 years. The president has executive power and is chosen by the National Assembly following countrywide legislative elections. The cabinet is selected by the president from the National Assembly; it consists of a vice president and a flexible number of ministers and assistant ministers, currently 12 and 3, respectively. The National Assembly has 40 elected and 4 appointed members; it is expanded following each census (every 10 years).

Botswana Beyond the narrow eastern corridor where the majority of population is concentrated, Botswana is a largely roadless wilderness of savannas, deserts, wetlands and salt pans. Skinflints and softies beware: This remains a destination for the intrepid, well-heeled traveller. Botswana is an African success story. It achieved independence from Britain in 1966 and immediately thereafter, in a mad stroke of luck, discovered three of the world's richest diamond mines. Today it enjoys a relatively enlightened government, and good health, educational and economic standards. To ensure the country's natural assets are preserved, Botswana's government has embraced a policy of courting primarily high-cost, low-impact tourism, although recent years have seen options for independent, budget-minded travellers grow. Botswana's government distributes videos in battle against AIDS Associated Press - Tuesday February 18, 2003
Sello Motseta, Associated Press Writer GABORONE, Botswana - Botswana's government launched a series of informational videos Tuesday aimed at informing the public about free AIDS drugs and prevention of the disease, part of an aggressive assault on the pandemic that is ravaging the country. Botswana has been at the forefront of developing world countries trying to turn the tide of the disease. This diamond-rich southern African nation is the first country on the continent to commit to a widespread program of providing AIDS medicine through its public health system. About 19 percent, or 323,000, of Botswana's 1.7 million people are infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. But 38 percent of its adults are infected - the highest rate in the world. As part of Botswana's intense fight against AIDS, free antiretroviral drugs are available for anyone who tests positive for HIV. Botswana has more money than most African countries and is receiving some program funding from pharmaceutical giant and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
