Environment In Internet Survival Government of Botswana Website afrol News, 28 August - The Botswana government's eviction of its indigenous San (formerly called "Bushmen") community from its ancestral land in a game reserve is provoking further international protest. John E. Lange, the outgoing US Ambassador to Botswana, has now condemned the government's action. Earlier, the eviction has caused protests in the UK. Ambassador Lange has given a speech to the Botswana Press Club, where he questioned Botswana's human rights record over its treatment of the San people. The speech was reported in the 'Botswana Gazette', one of the country's principal daily newspapers. Lange is reported by the 'Botswana Gazette' to have recently visited the Central Kalahari Game Reserve - homeland of the Gana and Gwi San communities - and their resettlement camps outside the Reserve. However, these policies can often have adverse effects on local people who live on the lands where conservation measures are enforced. These policies can lead to human rights violations, greater resource depletion, increased poverty, and stratification among local communities.

Production By 2000, Orapa will be mining 60 Mt/year, of which 20 Mt will be ore and 40 Mt waste. Once mining operations in the open pit reach their maximum economic depth, Orapa will become an underground mining operation working through twin vertical shafts to get at the bottom sections of the kimberlite. Orapa has completed an expansion to its open pit, hoping to double production to 12 Mct/year. Through this process, the mine's labour requirements will rise by less than 10% while its overhead costs should increase by only 20%. The mine life will be reduced from 60 years to 30 years. Orapa increased production 1999, mainly as a result of an increase of grade experienced at the mine (from an average of 75 cpht in 1998 to 95 ctpht in 1999) as well as improved treatment and recovery efficiencies. On the other hand, Jwaneng experienced a decrease in average grade (125.8 ctpht in 1999 from 136.9 ctpht in 1998).

Botswana People Back to Top The Tawana state of northwestern Botswana can be seen as the least successful in incorporating other ethnic groups. Most of its population is Yei and Mbukushu by origin, related to riverine peoples in the Caprivi Strip, Angola, and Zambia to the north. Smaller numbers of Mbanderu and Herero have greater numbers of close relatives across the border in Namibia. The Subiya along the Chobe, closely related to people in the Caprivi Strip and Zambia, were excluded from the Tawana tribal reserve by the British.

The industrial revolution in Europe had created a need for new markets and raw materials. This precipitated a later rush for Africa from traders seeking concessions for their governments. Moreover, the gun - a new method for hunting - had been introduced to Batswana, who realised the value and power of firearms after a handful of Boers had been able to rout the Ndebele tribe in the 1830s.
