The Government of Botswana has noted with growing concern the appearance in sections of the Zimbabwe media of unbalanced, distorted, and on occasion, even openly hostile reports directed against the Government and the people of Botswana. The recent appearance of an editorial comment in the Bulawayo Chronicle newspaper entitled "Time to act against Botswana" is but an extreme example of what can only be described as a pattern of misguided and xenophobic attacks on the good name of this country and its people.
The ingenuity of these papers of deriving facts from fairy tales and publishing them as such can only be interpreted as a deliberate and systematic attempt to fuel hatred and xenophobia between our peoples and to sour the warm and cordial relations that the Governments of Botswana and Zimbabwe continue to enjoy.
Botswana and Zimbabwe enjoy long standing cordial relations which have been reinforced and enhanced by formal structures of cooperation between the two. The Botswana/Zimbabwe Joint Permanent Commission on Cooperation and the Botswana /Zimbabwe Joint Permanent Commission on Defence and Security provide mechanisms for discussion of important issues in the relations between our two countries and have served both our countries well.

European, especially Scotttish, missionaries arrived in the early 1800s, and David Livingstone lived in the country. In the 19th century, hostilities broke out between the Batswana and Boer settlers in the Transvaal. Several decades after appeals by the Batswana for assistance, the British Government in 1885 put "Bechuanaland" under its protection. The northern territory remained under indirect British administration and today is Botswana, but the southern territory became part of the Cape Colony and is now part of the North-West Province of South Africa ; the majority of Setswana-speaking people live across the border in

Few are left of the many San who once roamed southern Africa, for a period believed to go back at least 20,000 years. Their sad fate has recently been brought starkly to mind by a furore that has erupted over the removal of two small remaining communities from Botswana's sprawling Central Kalahari Game Reserve. San, or Bushmen, are collectively known as Basarwa in Botswana. The two affected tribes, which at last government count in 2001 came to 1,645 individuals, are called the Gana and the Gwi. The Botswana government's explanation for moving them is that it wishes to ensure the park's integrity as a nature reserve, and that it wishes to integrate the San into the country's social and economic life. The removals started in 1997, and most of the community has since been relocated to settlements outside the park. In exchange for their traditional hunting-gathering existence, the Botswana government says they have been granted title deeds to the land apportioned to them, and they have been given goats and cattle. Coming Out of the Shadows

A boy confronts his shadow in a squatter camp bordering the Kalahari Desert. Romanticized as nomadic hunter-gatherers who were uniquely close to nature, most of southern Africa's indigenous San (Bushmen) now live in settlements on land not their own. A few have won more. South Africa recently gave this boy's clan 140 square miles (225 square kilometers) and a share in managing a game park.

BOTSWANA: Government to provide free HIV/AIDS drug Integrated Regional Information Network - August 11, 2000 JOHANNESBURG, 10 August (IRIN) - President Festus Mogae of Botswana has said that his government would provide free HIV/AIDS drugs at public health facilities for people living with the disease. Addressing the women's wing of the ruling Botswana Democratic Party, Mogae said that with the financial support of international organisations like the Melinda and Bill Gates Foundation, the government would soon purchase the drugs and make them available in clinics, dispensaries and hospitals. The drugs would be issued free since the majority of people could not afford to buy them. The president added that it is not helpful to disown or dispute Botswana's alarming HIV/AIDS statistics. A forthcoming UNDP report says that Botswana's HIV/AIDS prevalence rate has reached 36 percent of the population.
