68. WCJ"A Dying Culture - The Last Bushmen Of Botswana Are Resettled" - 2002.05.30"
THE WORLD culture JOURNAL, published by WebdaK Communications, A dying culture the last bushmen of botswana are resettled - 2002.05.30 by WB.
http://www.webdak.com/garchives/00000055.html
THE WORLD CULTURE JOURNAL published by WebdaK Communications "A dying Culture - the last bushmen of Botswana are resettled" - 2002.05.30 by WB For 30,000 years, bushmen lived in the Kalahari desert in today's Botswana - but now, after a 17-year struggle, the last of them will be forced out of their ancestral land by their own government. We all witness the death of another traditional culture - unneccessary as many others, but even more tragical, because the "San people"'s culture survived longer than any other on earth. They are forced out of their ancestral land, because of the greed for diamonds - a reason for Botswana's relative wealth.

"This is the final chapter in a 17-year saga which has seen the relocation of some 2,200 San out of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) into resettlement camps by the Botswana Government." writes BBC News-AFRICA
In 1961, Botswana created Central Kalahari Game Reserve - or CKGR - measuring ,52 000 square kilometres, especially for the San ...to provide refuge and the wildlife on which they depend as hunter-gatherers - a haven where they could continue their lifestyle and develop at their own pace." There was varius resistance movements during the long struggle, but one of the last resources they have is a lawsuit the San filed with the help of South African lawyers. It is an uphill battle: as long as the government insists, that the resettlement is "for their own good", Botswana's leaders will not realize, that this neo-colonialistic argument destroyed the homeland of too many original cultures, including Native Americans.

Students earn 16 semester credits on a 15-week experience designed to encourage a global awareness that enables people to live and act in an interdependent world. Groups of seven to 25 students are lead by one or two academic directors. Botswana, one of Africa's last great wilderness areas, is also one of the continent's most stable and prosperous nations. Nearly 70 percent of the country is covered by the ecologically fragile Kalahari Desert, an isolated expanse inhabited by the ancient San people, whose origins date back 30,000 years. Adjoining this vast desert and scrubland is the Okavango Delta, a lush oasis of marshes, rivers, islands, and abundant wildlife. Here, traveling by mokoro traditional dugout canoes you study the unique ecosystems of Botswana as you explore the waterways and islands that are home to such species as elephant, giraffe, lion, buffalo, hippo, and zebra, as well as thousands of birds.

The capital city is Gaberone , other major cities are Francistown Lobatse and Selebi-Phikwe . Formerly the British protectorate of Bechuanaland, Botswana adopted its new name upon independence in 1966. The economy, one of the most robust on the continent, is dominated by diamond mining. While indigenous crafts such as Botswana baskets, weaving, woodcarving and pottery will catch everyone's eye, it is diamonds that have turned out to be Botswana’s best financial friend – the country is one of the world’s top producers of the gem.
The official language of Botswana is English, however most people speak Setswana , the language of the Tswana (plural Batswana). Most of Botswana lies on a plateau, the Kalahari desert covering most of the South and South West of the region. The

GUDIGWA CAMP - OKAVANGO DELTA, BOTSWANA
Gudigwa Camp offers guests on safari the opportunity to break away and experience the cultural richness of Botswana. Gudigwa village is a settlement of 800 "Bukakhwe" San Bushman or "people of the dry country". The Bukakhwe people are indigenous to the Okavango Delta, and are related to the Bushman tribes of the Kalahari. Their traditional ways of living off the land are very much the same.
This community-based eco-cultural tourism venture has been developed by the "Bukakhwe Cultural Conservation Trust" in partnership with Wilderness Safaris and Conservation International. The trust is an organization uniting the Gudigwa community to create upliftment and employment for this remote village. The Gudigwa experience highlights the intimate connection between the Bukakhwe people's cultural heritage and the natural environment. By sharing this linkage with their guests, they are reviving a dying culture and passing on intricate knowledge to the future generations.
The Gudigwa project aims to generate employment for the San while allowing them to maintain their ancient heritage and natural environment. The partnership will benefit every member of the village as jobs are created and proceeds are funnelled back into community development projects. As the largest remaining Bushman village in Botswana, the Gudigwa people are proud to be promoting this cross-cultural exchange and reviving their traditional way of life, which is increasingly being threatened by modernization.
