Introduction
It is a truism to say that all countries are multicultural but at the same time are linked to globalized culture. But the recognition of multiculturalism in Botswana has been blocked, until the later 1990s, by the need to develop a unifying national culture. That national culture is based largely upon Setswana (Tswana language) culture. It represents the growth of a distinct Botswana nationality defined within state borders, and embraces elements of postcolonial English culture. Tswana national culture can be traced back to the incorporation of diverse peoples under a string of Tswana states, beginning in the later 18th century and reaching maturity by the time of British colonization at the end of the 19th century. The Tswana states, linked by the the kinship ties of their rulers speaking linked dialects of a common language, were brought together in allianceagainst common enemies between the 1850s and the 1890s. Such'tribal' federalism continued into the colonial period. Everyone within the colonial boundaries of Botswana came to be regarded as a Motswana, regardless of ethnic origin. Hence many outsiders assumed that Botswana was a monocultural entity with only one 'tribe'. But it was not until the end of colonialism that the old Tswana states were incorporated into a unitary state, under a powerful central government, between 1964 and 1969.

The history of Botswana is characterised by migrations of peoples into the country from the north and west and particularly from the east and south, as well as internal movements of groups of people. The group which eventually emerged as most numerous, and dominant, were the Batswana . Their pattern of dividing and migrating saw the formation of numerous Tswana tribes, and their eventual occupation of all areas of the country. The term " Batswana " refers to the ethnic group of people who speak the Setswana language and share the Sotho-Tswana culture, while in its common contemporary usage, it refers to all citizens of the Republic of Botswana , regardless of their ethnic background. The singular is " Motswana ": a citizen of the country. " Tswana " is used as an adjective - for example " Tswana state " or "

ew countries in the world have a tradition, culture and variety as diverse as this multi-faceted land called India. Enriched by successive waves of migration and marauders from distant lands, every one of them left an indelible imprint which was absorbed into the Indian way of life. It is this variety which provides a breathtaking ensemble for experiences that is uniquely Indian. Its physical, religious and racial variety is as varied as its linguistic diversity. Underneath this diversity lies the continuity of Indian civilization and social structure from the very earliest times until the present day. Modern day India represents the largest democracy in the world with a seamless picture of unity in diversity unparalleled anywhere else. Here we have attempted to catalogue everything Indian be it religions, festivals, rituals, artefacts, monuments, different attires, music and dance, language and literature. Come and let us help you discover a little more of fascinating India.

PEOPLE AND HISTORY The Batswana, a term also used to denote all citizens of Botswana, refers to the country's major ethnic group (the "Tswana" in South Africa), which came into the area from South Africa during the Zulu wars of the early 1880s. Prior to European contact, the Batswana lived as herders and farmers under tribal rule. In the late 19th century, hostilities broke out between the Batswana and Boer settlers from the Transvaal. After appeals by the Batswana for assistance, the British Government in 1885 put "Bechuanaland" under its protection. The northern territory remained under direct administration and is today's Botswana, while the southern territory became part of the Cape Colony and is now part of the northwest province of South Africa; the majority of Setswana-speaking people today live in South Africa.

    Living art
Botswana's artistic culture has flourished from time immemorial. The Kalahari is rich in the remains of tools and artefacts made thousands of years ago, as early as the Stone Age. The Tsodilo hills are covered with San paintings. The artistic tradition lives on in basketwork, pottery, weaving and art that flourishes today in many parts of the country. Botswana has been rich in art, pottery and tool making since the Stone Age. The San hunter-gatherers lived in the Kalahari for at least 27,000 years, leaving traces of their occupation in bone and flint tools, and implements. Iron Age settlers arrived 1,200 years ago to mine minerals and smelt iron. These communities lived on ancient trade routes, which transferred goods and raw materials to and from Africa to the Middle East and Asia. Early glass trade beads from the Indian sub-continent have been found in the Kalahari alongside traditional African artefacts. The earliest rock paintings were probably painted in the Tsodilo hills at least 1,500 years ago. Some may have been even earlier. The painting by the ancestors of the San (Bushmen) continued until comparatively recent times. Tsodilo consists of four main hills and recently was named as Botswana's first World Heritage site. More than 4,000 paintings have been discovered in over 350 sites now located along well-marked trails. The interested visitor needs to spend at least two nights at Tsodilo to see a fraction of them. There is also an Iron Age site dating back to about 750 AD, which reveals broken pottery, iron artefacts and Stone Age tools.

Botswana People Back to Top The Tawana state of northwestern Botswana can be seen as the least successful in incorporating other ethnic groups. Most of its population is Yei and Mbukushu by origin, related to riverine peoples in the Caprivi Strip, Angola, and Zambia to the north. Smaller numbers of Mbanderu and Herero have greater numbers of close relatives across the border in Namibia. The Subiya along the Chobe, closely related to people in the Caprivi Strip and Zambia, were excluded from the Tawana tribal reserve by the British.

One of Africa's most politically and economically stable countries, Botswana is home to 1.5 million people and 226,900 square miles of vast savannas, the Kalahari Desert, and world famous wildlife parks. Botswana's citizens, most of whom live in the major cities, towns and villages along the eastern border, enjoy standards of education and economic well-being rivaled on the continent only by neighboring South Africa. Overview
Pitzer in Botswana strives to go beyond a superficial acquaintance with the culture. Through a structured and demanding schedule of intensive Setswana study, family stays, fieldwork, a core course in regional cooperative development, university seminars, and a directed independent study project, the program seeks to enhance sensitivity, understanding, and empathy across cultures.

    Useful information

No accurate records exist of the first ever inhabitants of Botswana, although tool fragments and other evidence of human activity have been uncovered which are thought to be around 27,000 years old. The Basarwa, also known as San Bushmen, were among the first recognised people to inhabit the country although only 40,000 remain today.
The 17th Century brought the Tswana, or Batswana from the South, a Bantu people related to the Sotho of Transvaal and Lesotho. The Tswana now make up over 50% of Botswana's population and the remaining peoples have been heavily absorbed into this culture. This may be one of the main reasons for Botswana's cultural and social stability over the last two centuries.
As well as the San, minority tribes include the 25,000 Mbanderu, cousins of the Namibian Herero tribe who fled Namibia following the German conquest in the 1890's. The striking traditional costume of these people with large flowing skirts and elaborate headdresses is based on that of the 19th century missionaries wives.
