Botswana Culture The art of Botswana has developed through the production of items for daily use, made by artisans in a way that unifies their utilitarian and spiritual concerns. Wood carvings of great variety are created throughout the country, usually by men. The local mopane wood is very hard and is used for bowls and other household items, as well as for figurines of humans and animals. A soft wood called mokomoto is used for toys. The mythical tokoloshi, a half-man/half-hare creature that, according to legend, is normally invisible to humans, is carved by Batswana men in great detail. The Batswana are more famous for their woven baskets, however. These are produced by women in a style similar to that of many Native Americans. Created in many different shapes and for different uses, the baskets are also adorned with woven designs often representing the personal experiences of the artisan. Sometimes, however, more widely observed phenomena of the natural world may be rep resented in such formal designs as Tears of the Giraffe, Urine Trail of the Bull, and Forehead of the Zebra.

Culture
Botswana's early tribal religions were primarily cults in which ancestors directed family matters from their underworld domain and were contactable only through the heads of family groups. Religious rites included male and female initiation ceremonies and rain-making rituals. Polygamy was practised, and a man's estate was inherited by the children of his head wife. San folklore is rich with supernatural explanations of natural events, orchestrated by N!odima, the good guy, and Gcawama, the mischievous trickster. Missionaries dislodged nearly all the traditional practices, and Christianity is currently the prevailing belief system in Botswana. English is the official language of Botswana, but the most common language is Setswana, a Bantu language understood by over 90% of the population. The original Botswana artists were everyday craftspeople who injected individual aesthetics into utilitarian implements such as pottery, fabrics and tools. Botswana's baskets are exquisite, employing designs with such evocative names as Tears of the Giraffe, Urine Trail of the Bull and Forehead of the Zebra. Because indigenous languages have only been written since the coming of the Christian missionaries, Botswana doesn't have much of a literary tradition. All that survives of the ancient myths and praise poetry of the native peoples has been handed down orally and only recently transcribed. Botswana's most famous modern literary figure was South African-born Bessie Head, who settled in Serowe and wrote of the harshness and beauty of village life.

Botswana Time and Date Botswana Culture Back to Top Western dress has been general among people in Botswana, except at the poorest level, since the late 19th century. Common diet and cuisine consist of sorghum and corn porridge, beans and pulses and traditional spinach, supplemented by tomato, potato, onion, and cabbage usually purchased from stores. Meat consumption has become more common with the opening of small butcheries selling beef. Traditional foods include dried phane caterpillars from mopane woodland, eaten as relish or snacks, fruits such as the wild morulaplum, and beer made from sorghum or millet. Families in rural villages live in traditional compounds, usually with two or three small houses of cylindrical clay walls and conical thatch roofs, set around an open fireplace and surrounded by low clay walls. Most recent houses are square with metal roofs, while many houses in the northwest are made of reed.

Botswana History
The nation was originally inhabited by the San people (also known as the Bushmen), then the Tswana, a Bantu group. In 1885, it became the British protectorate of Bechuanaland (mainly to ward off encroachment by the Germans from the west and Boers from the south). The struggle for independence, which was achieved in 1966, was largely peaceful and democratic. Seretse Khama III was elected the country's first president, a post he held until his death in 1980. Perhaps the most important event in Botswana's modern history was the discovery of diamonds in 1967. Diamond wealth has enabled the country to build up foreign currency reserves and economic stability, though most of the population remains very poor. That stability, accompanied by true multiparty democracy, has served as a model for sub-Saharan Africa. Botswana's greatest problem today is AIDS: The country has one of the highest HIV infection rates in the world - some estimates say 1 in 3 people have the virus.

Cgara, 24, is a San guide who shows tourists his people's unique knowledge of the Kalahari at a community-owned game farm near D'kar in Ghanzi district, in central-west Botswana. He is one of the few San youth with education, a job and a future. The estimated 50,000 San in Botswana are "the poorest of the poor", says Alice Mogwe, head of Ditshwanelo, the Centre for Human Rights. Botswana is rich in diamonds and cattle, with a population of just 1.6 million. But as an ethnic minority, the San experience both poverty and allegedly discrimination. They are called "Basarwa" (those who don't raise cattle, in the Tswana language), a term they feel is demeaning.

The San have lived in Southern Africa for 30,000 years, but the fate of a unique lifestyle is in the balance
MOLAPO, 5 Mar 2004 (IRIN) - Drinking cool water in an ostrich egg shell after a long hot trek. Praying with the parents by the ancestors' graves. Sharing water pans with lions. These are Jumanda Gakelebone's memories of his life as a San resident in Botswana's Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR).
The fate of this lifestyle hinges on a court ruling later this year on the legality of the government's controversial eviction of the San people from their ancestral land in the reserve.
"The CKGR case has a symbolic importance, because its communities are the last among us San to have this special connection with the land," says Mothambo Ngakaeaja, coordinator of the Botswana section of the Working Group of Indigenous Minorities in Southern Africa (WIMSA).
The resettlement of roughly 2,500 CKGR residents, first mooted in 1986, has sparked local and international protest, and tarnished the image of Botswana, one of Africa's longest-running democracies.

    20. Botswana's Leader Defends AIDS Testing - The Washington Times: World - May 10, 2

    THE WASHINGTON TIMES
"I am dissatisfied because of the rigmarole one has to undertake," a visibly irritated Mr. Mogae said at his Gaborone office on Friday.
"Because of the [outside] criticisms and apprehensions that were expressed, we have to prescribe an elaborate procedure for offering routine testing.
"So we are covering fewer people than we had hoped in order to accommodate the critics. We think it is a pity. We are making progress, but slower than we had hoped."
Botswana, which has the world's highest HIV-prevalence rates with nearly 40 percent of the adult population testing positive, adopted a policy of "routine testing" for the virus that causes AIDS.
Those who are found negative can protect themselves from infection. Those found positive can be enrolled in a national program for free treatment. Testing is voluntary, although the president would prefer it was mandatory.
But critics in the United States and Europe, while praising Mr. Mogae for providing his countrymen with free antiretroviral (ARV) treatment, charge the policy smacks of forced testing and violates the public's human rights and right to privacy.
