Publications Selected Publications Complete Publications Functional Ecology The potential for rapid increases in temperature and aridity over the next century will challenge the ability of long-lived tree speicies to evolve in response to novel selection pressures. In this context, the capacity for plastic responses to the environment will be important for the persistence of species. By using a common garden experiment and microsatellite DNA markers to quantify genetic variation in natural populations, this study shows that hydraulic responses to contrasting cool and moist versus warm and dry climates in ponderosa pine are the product of phenotypic plasticity and not ecotypic differentiation. gradient in a C /C grassland.

Molecular Systematics , Second Edition. Sinauer Assoc., Massachusetts. This edited book has been widely used in the field of molecular systematics providing a comprehensive guide to the protocols, analyses, applications and limitations of the major methods used in the reconstruction of historical relationships based on molecular data. The second edition includes a unique chapter discussing (in detail) the methods currently available for actually reconstructing the phylogenies once the molecular data is in hand.
Chapters and Reviews Mable, B.K. 2004. "Why polyploidy is rarer in animals than in plants revisited: Myths and Mechanisms". Special Issue of Biol. J. Linn. Soc.: Proceedings of the International Polyploidy Conference, Linnean Society, London April 2003. (In Press)
This paper was presented at the first international polyploidy conference held since 1979. The purpose of this paper was to re-evaluate theories for why polyploidy is so much more common in plants than in animals and to propose alternative suggestions based on shared traits between plants and animals that do exist as polyploids. This special volume will provide a much-needed update on current research into the evolution and consequences of polyploidy.

The Jewel Box Garden
By Thomas Hobbs
An excerpt:
" Make sure your oasis-to-be is not sabotoged by a clinical white paint job. Apartment dwellers and townhouse gardeners may have to disguise rather than repaint. Clever use of trelises, matchstick blinds, bamboo fencing and strategically placed plants can trasform a prison cell, let alone a balcony. A bit of "set-dee" is crucial to all forms of gardening. "
