1. For the homework assignment due this week, check out the following webpages. Scan over the plant families represented to help you in making your choice.

BTNY 1220 Homework Page
Summer 2002
Overview
For your plant research project, you will be selecting a flowering plant family and researching it. Homework will be assigned each week and will be due on Thursdays. Homework can be handwritten if readable by me, or typed. Each homework will be worth 10 points. The intent is to guide you through the research process by asking you to answer a limited set of questions each week. One fifth of the final (50 points) will consist of an essay summarizing the aspect of your particular plant family.
Homework 5: Fitting in
: First effort due on the discussion board by Thu morning Jul 25. Answers to my comments and questions due by Monday morning July 29. Read the presentations and discussions by others.
Homework 4: Smell the flowers
: final version due Thu Jul 18.
Homework 3: Secondary Plant Products
: due Wed morning July 3.
Homework 2: Taxonomic Space Exploration
: due Thu morning June 27.
I'm going to list folks and their research projects as they come in, so you can see what's already been picked and also be able to get in touch with someone whose interest overlaps yours. If the family has been chosen, choose another one unless the choice was limited to a subfamily. Then you can pick another different subfamily within that family. By "initial focus", I just mean what got you started, not what keeps you there. Name Family Initial Focus Homework 1 Talitha Liliaceae (subfamily with Hostas) Hostas, horticultural

62. Botany 1220 (Proxomitron Active)
Use the sketches to help your discussion of the flower parts, not to substitute for them. As in homework 3, use language that your fellow students can
http://morgan.botany.uga.edu/btny1220/hw4.htm
Homework 4
Smell the flowers
Please post to the message board a rough draft of this homework by Monday morning, July 15 for my comments. Then turn in to me as you did for Homework 2 a printed final version by Thursday July 18. I'd like to make the next two homeworks worth 20 points. I know I said they'd be 10 points each, but it seems to me that most people are working hard enough on them to make the remaining ones worth more. This will increase the influence of your homework on your final grade from 50/500=10% to 70/520=13.5%. Please consider this and if you have objections, you may let me know in confidence by Wed morning July 10. If anyone objects, we'll keep to the 10 pt system.
1. Choose your subjects. The subjects of this homework will be two species in your family (or subfamily). One will be a species of the type genus (for help on what is a type genus, see http://www.csdl.tamu.edu/FLORA/Wilson/tfp/car/nomenclatures01.htm ). The other will be a species of your choice, perhaps one of the three you chose for Homework 3. For those of you looking a smaller subfamilies, you can pick the plant of your choice from the subfamily (Hostas comes to mind), but still choose the type genus for the larger family itself (Liliaceae). 2. For each choice, the object will be to describe all parts of the flower. Some of you have already come a long way toward this in your previous homeworks. That's just fine. A complete description includes

CNEWS Smart Internet research can make homework a breeze By MARIAN PRESS Ontario Institute for Studies in Education The Internet has opened up a world of new resources to students working on school reports and projects or just trying to get through the daily grind of homework. But as most students and their parents have found, the Internet is a highly disorganized place and finding relevant information is not necessarily easy. Virtually anyone can publish a web page, making the barriers to publication non existent, so not only is there the quantity of information to worry about, there is the very real issue of quality. In this column you will find some of the best homework sites on the web, with an emphasis on those that are Canadian. But you may want to start with a visit to

Individual Tutoring
The point of individual tutoring is to provide the student with highly customized interaction with the material they are having difficulty with. This type of interaction can be used to help failing students or improve the performance of students who wish to do better than they currently are or to help students prepare for AP exams. It can add structure and direction to a students approach to the topic or add detail and special relevance to the topic that isn't being provided in the classroom.
The goal of individual tutoring is to provide the student with resources and information that is not provided in as accessible a manner elsewhere. The ultimate goal creates excitement, interest and energy in the student about the subject, which in turn leads to an increased capacity in the subject.
Small Group Tutoring Small group tutoring (2-4 students) offers many of the same advantages that individual tutoring does but since a group of students is involved the level of customization and the amount of time that I can focus on your child exclusively is limited. The big gain is that the cost is less per student. The goal of small group tutoring is to provide the students with resources and information that meet their common needs. Part of the goal is to find aspects of the subject that are exciting and interesting to all the students and use that to energize the students toward better overall performance as well as teach them how to help one another.
