Fun Science Fair Projects! Janice VanCleave The title of this article is viewed by some people as a contradiction of terms. Too often science fair projects are dreaded by teachers, librarians, and parents, as well as by the students. This is an unfortunate situation usually resulting from a lack of instructional materials to allow students, with a minimum of assistance depending on their age, to develop the project themselves. Science is a search for answers. Science projects are good ways to learn more about science as students search for answers to specific problems. Instructional materials are needed to give guidance and provide ideas, but students must do their part in the search by planning experiments, finding and recording information related to the problem, and organizing the collected data to find an answer. Presenting the project at a science fair can be a rewarding experience if the exhibit has been properly prepared. Trying to assemble a project overnight, however, only results in frustration and a poor grade. The student is also cheated out of the fun of being a science detective. Solving a scientific mystery, like solving a detective mystery, requires planning and the careful collecting of data. Students should be encouraged to start their projects with curiosity and a desire to learn something new. The following sections provide suggestions of how students can get started on this scientific quest. I divide a sample project into its parts and provide a format that can be used to guide students through other projects, regardless of the topic.

Teaching Activities I teach two graduate courses, Population Ecology and Population Analysis . Population Ecology is team-taught with Dr. Kirk Moloney of Botany and it covers basic theory of population dynamics including growth models, predation, competition, and population projection. Population Analysis covers statistical and analytical techniques for estimating parameters of biological populations, and is frequently taken by students from Entomology Statistics , and Zoology/Genetics . I also teach an undergraduate course called Ecological Methods which includes elements of statistical design, population sampling and estimation, field sampling of vegetation, and mapping habitat using geographic information systems. Gail A. Baker Teaching and Research Interests In the fall of 1994 I began teaching full-time in the Science Division at Lane Community College (LCC). This marked a significant transition for me from a research to a teaching career. Before joining the faculty at LCC I had a 15-year career as a research scientist at three major universities, University of California Irvine and Los Angeles and Oregon State University. My research background in the field of plant ecology has given me a strong foundation of information and experience to bring to the classroom and share with students. The research projects I have been involved with range from the deserts of Baja and southern California to the chaparral and giant sequoias of the southern Sierra and up the west coast of the United States to the temperate rain forests of the Olympic peninsula in Washington. I knew I would like to make the transition from research to teaching when I taught part-time at LCC in 1986 and continued to teach at North Seattle Community College during 6 years in the Seattle area. The opportunity to work with motivated students in small classes was very inspiring.

Most of our staff have two primary roles at camp, that of an activity instructor and that of a cabin counselor. Both jobs are lots of fun, and you'll definitely appreciate the variety. A few of our more experienced staff will spend so much time in the woods that they will not have a cabin, but they still act as counselors when they're not teaching, helping to fill in the gaps. In your role as an activity instructor, you'll be a part of a team led by an “Activity Head” who will coordinate schedules and teaching methods . Simply being able to swim does not qualify you to teach swimming; having had a horse does not qualify you to teach riding.
