61. Botanical Centers Gardens
Personal reviews of botanical gardens, with links.
http://www.plantx.com/botanical_centers_gardens.htm
what makes a good botanical center. good botany : a botanical center must be focused on the study of plants. It is best if that study is regional in that the local flora is the primary focus or is the launch pad for broader study, For example Denver Botanical has focused on plants that grow in high elevation xeric environments. They have a great collection of native cacti and local plants in which to build an international collection that is useful to landscapers, and patrons of the center good connections to other botanical centers: Kew gardens is probable the best at this because of its historic relationship to the crown and the British Empire. You will see the Kew relationship all over the world as is true of the Huntington and The New York Botanical. a qualified staff that has a true love of plants and an intimate knowledge of plants: San Antonio is a good example of this dicotemy Paul Cox who was the interim director for a time should really be the director because of his knowledge and enthusiasim for plants. The present director has shown more of an affinity for bedding plants and planning weddings. These things sometimes are necessary to a botanical center but should never over shadow the primary importance of botany. If you look at the great centers you will always see a great botanist at the forefront. Sometimes this is hard for patrons to swallow who are more interested in throwing parties and using botanical centers as backdrops for society parties.

70. BOERNER BOTANICAL GARDENS ST. FIACRE

Saint Fiacre
The Patron Saint of Gardeners
By Leona Woodring Smith So many public and even private gardens have a secluded spot reserved for a statue of St. Francis that many people mistakenly believe Francis of Assisi to be the patron saint of gardeners. Actually, that distinction rightly goes to an Irish monk by the name of Fiacre. The Roman Catholic Church has deemed August 30 as the feast day of Saint Fiacre. Europeans, who have recognized Fiacre as the patron saint of gardeners since the Middle Ages, celebrate this day with special masses, floral processions and pilgrimages. In France, special floats of elaborate floral arrangements make their way down flower petal-covered streets. In Ireland, citizens sing hymns written in Fiacre's honor. Although his feast day is not officially celebrated in the United States, statues of Saint Fiacre can be found in many gardens and museums, including Cypress Gardens in Florida and The Cloisters at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. St. Fiacre was born in Ireland and raised in a monastery. Much of mankind's learning and knowledge was brought to the monasteries and left in the care and protection of the monks. Travelers brought seeds and plant material, as well as cultural enlightenment from as far away as Rome and the Holy Land. St. Fiacre's days at the monastery taught him a deep love of silence, the joys of planting and harvesting crops and an appreciation of nature. Drawn to the religious life and the desire to serve God in solitude, Fiacre decided to establish a hermitage for worship. He traveled south and chose a wooded area by the Nore River for his home, with a cave for meditation, a well for drinking water and the river for bathing.

About Hawai'i's Botanical Gardens
The term "botanical garden" has been applied to gardens ranging from research gardens associated with major botanical institutes to municipal gardens which support little scientific activity. In addition, public and private "botanical gardens" exist which contain superb plant collections, but do not provide labeling or maintain records on the plants in the collection. The 1989 Botanic Gardens Conservation Strategy published by World Wildlife Fund and the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources defined a botanical garden as a "garden containing scientifically ordered and maintained collections of plants, usually documented and labelled, and open to the public for the purposes of recreation, education and research." Botanical gardens in Hawai'i play an active role in the preservation of our native flora. The Amy Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden Honolulu Botanical Gardens Harold H. Lyon Arboretum
