The Labyrinth of Consilience
For its latest garden project, Matthaei Botanical Gardens has drawn inspiration from a classic geometric form commonly found in nature. . . the spiral, and from the meditative labyrinth experience which dates back to the middle ages and beyond. The same pattern that describes the chambers in a Nautilus shell and the growth patterns of various leaves serves as the basis of the labyrinth pathway. Unlike the traditional maze, which confronts the participant with a challenge in navigation, the Labyrinth of Consilience will establish a more reflective tone, provided by a stone path that has no false turns or dead-ends and leads the visitor unambiguously to a centrally-located goal. . . the Steiner Fountain. This special garden room will provide patrons the opportunity for a contemplative stroll in a setting that bridges the space between things natural and man-made. The Labyrinth is a design conceived by Patricia Olynyk, member of the University of Michigan art faculty. She chose as her model the leaf pattern of the angel wing begonia, superimposing two leaves facing opposite directions to generate the appropriate spiral. Her goal is a structure that can be regarded as simple yet intricate invoking the various layers of symmetry that can be achieved in geometry. In the Labyrinth, art, nature, mathematics and the humanities come together.

In conjunction with the City of Vista , we are setting out to create a garden for our community. Alta Vista Botanical Gardens shall harmoniously incorporate education, nature and art.

Alta Vista Gardens is in the early stages of developing a new standard for botanical gardens. While holding true to traditional scientific approach to botanical gardens, and providing an interactive, living classroom for North San Diego County students, the gardens will take a new approach to create a completely new interpretation of what a botanical garden can become. As the gardens continue to be developed, plant enthusiasts will be thrilled at the wide variety of rare, beautiful and remarkable plants which will be showcased in the gardens. For everyone else in the community, there will be equally compelling reasons to come to the gardens.
