Bosnia's Plavsic denies war crimes
THE HAGUE, Netherlands Former Bosnian Serb president Biljana Plavsic pleaded not guilty to nine counts of genocide and crimes against humanity when she appeared before a UN tribunal in The Hague. The 70-year-old former biology professor was charged with orchestrating the wartime execution and deportation of entire populations of non-Serbs from parts of Bosnia during the 1992-95 war. In her first court appearance on Thursday, she pleaded not guilty as each of the nine counts, including genocide, complicity in genocide, extermination, murder, willful killing, persecutions and deportation, were read out by the judge. Plavsic, known as the Iron Lady of the Balkans, was deputy to the top Bosnian Serb fugitive suspect, Radovan Karadzic, during the war in Bosnia.

162. GRAND FUNK RAILROAD: Bosnia (Capitol)
Review of bosnia, the reunited band's first new album release.

GRAND FUNK RAILROAD: Bosnia (Capitol)
Noted Grand Funk Railroad fan, Homer Simpson, once described what made this band so great: "the wild, shirtless lyrics of Mark Farner; the bone-crushing bass of Mel Schacher; the competent drum work of Don Brewer." I've been a GFR fan from the first time I heard the band's excellent E Pluribus Funk album back in '71. Although I was skeptical when I heard that the original trio of Mark, Don & Mel were going to tour after almost 20 years, I quickly became psyched when I heard they would be performing with an orchestra. Few American bands back then could compete with Grand Funk when it came to sheer power on stage. To these ears, their 1974 live album, Caught in the Act remains one of the best live albums ever recorded. Needless to say, they had some pretty high standards to live up to. After the orchestral intro from Also Sprach Zarathustra, they launch into a slightly rusty version of "Are You Ready." Brewer's vocals aren't quite as strong, and Farner's guitar is missing the ballsy sound heard on the studio version. But things pick up quickly. "Rock and Roll Soul" is next, and the band starts to loosen up. By the time they get to "Footstompin' Music," the band is firmly in the groove and kicking some serious ass. Peter Frampton joins the band onstage for the first of a handful of tunes, the bluesy "Time Machine." One of the best tracks on Bosnia is the medley of "Paranoid," "Sin's a Good Man's Brother" and "Mr. Limousine Driver." By this time, I'm wondering how this disc can possibly get any better.

Diplomats trapped in Bosnia riots
Buses which brought Muslims to the ceremony were set on fire BANJA LUKA, Bosnia Herzegovina Top Western diplomats have been trapped in a building by thousands of rioting Bosnian Serb nationalists. Several top international officials were trapped in the Islamic community centre after up to 2,000 protestors ran amok during a ceremony held on Monday to mark the restoration of a mosque, destroyed in Bosnia's 1992-95 ethnic war. A United States helicopter, sent in to evacuate the officials, was prevented from landing by the mob. The hostages include Jacques Klein, United Nations mission head, and Werner Blatter, who heads the U.N. refugee agency in Bosnia. The applause that greeted Klein's arrival provoked a furious outburst from the crowd of Serb protestors, who stormed a police cordon to attack Muslims across the road with tear gas grenades, stones and eggs. U.N. spokesman Alun Roberts told Reuters "Mr Klein and a number of other VIPS are in the building. They are staying there for the time being, until we see how it is going to unfold."

The names of the streets and the ones on public buildings are written in both Latin and Cyrillic scripts, as well as the signposts. The 10th generation of police cadets on its way Last week, the selection of the 10th generation of police cadets in the Federation took place in the Vraca Police Academy, Sarajevo. During the week, around 200 young people between 18 and 27 from five Cantons in the Federation took another step towards becoming police officers. The selection is fundamentally different from the previous ones: this is the first time that the local authorities administrate their own recruitment process. What's in a "mass grave"?
The Srebrenica story is symptomatic of what has happened since the start of the war in Bosnia. There has been a degradation of investigative journalism, with a ghoulish search for bodies substituting for professional rigour. The claims of 8000 slaughtered in Srebrenica have no more credibility than the claims of 250 000 dead in the whole of Bosnia.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
This report is based upon research conducted in Bosnia and Hercegovina, in particular in the region of Foca, in April 1997 and from December 1997 until February 1998. Sources for wartime abuses included research conducted by Human Rights Watch during the war. The report was edited by Holly Cartner, executive director of the Europe and Central Asia division of Human Rights Watch. Special thanks go to Dinah PoKempner and Michael McClintock. Crucial assistance in the preparation of the report was provided by Emily Shaw. Human Rights Watch would like to acknowledge and thank many individuals whose contributions to the research made this report possible, yet who cannot be named. They risked their own safety and the safety of their families to expose the truth, in the hopes that their perpetrators will be brought to justice.
SUMMARY
The Foca municipality was the site of some of the most brutal crimes committed during the 1992-1995 war in Bosnia and Hercegovina.

Reprieve for U.N. Bosnia mission
U.S. soldiers on patrol in Bosnia NEW YORK A decision on the future of the Bosnia peacekeeping mission has been delayed after the U.S. and U.N. failed to reach a compromise over U.S. demands for immunity from the International Criminal Court. The move will extend the U.N. peacekeeping mission in Bosnia until July 15. The U.S. had threatened to end the operation at midnight on Wednesday (0400 GMT) unless its peacekeepers were guaranteed exemption from possible prosecution on war crimes, genocide or crimes against humanity charges. The deadline had been a 72-hour extension from an initial cut-off date of last Sunday.
