Noel Malcolm, a former editor of the Spectator and currently a political commentator for London's Daily Telegraph, has undertaken to write a political and social history of Bosnia. According the book jacket, this work is the "first-ever full history of Bosnia," and it fulfills a need in light of the fighting that is taking place in Bosnia today. The motivation of this work is to place the current conflict in Bosnia-Hercegovina in the proper historical perspective. Specifically, Malcolm seeks to clarify the competing myths of the racial, religious and political history put forth by each side in the conflict. In his introduction, Malcolm writes that the war...has added two melancholy reasons for examining its history more closely: the first is the need to understand the origins of the fighting and the second is the need to dispel some of the clouds of misunderstanding, deliberate myth-making, and sheer ignorance in which all discussion of Bosnia and its history had become shrouded. (Malcolm, p. xix) The work is divided into the following sixteen chapters:
  • Race, Myths and Origins: Bosnia to 1180

II. BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA IN CROATIAN HISTORY The Croats lived north of the Carpathian Mountains before they moved to the South and settled in the present regions. This move took place during the siege of Constantinople by the Avaro-Persians in 626 and during the reign of Heraclius I the Byzantine emperor. He asked the Croats for help and invited them into Dalmatia. The Croats, after several years of bloody fighting, had defeated the Avars and pushed them to the north of the Danube. They then settled, as Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus writes, in Dalmatia, Pannonia and Illyricum which means: between the Adriatic Sea in the South and the Drava and Danube rivers in the North, and betwen the Rasa river in Istria in the West, the Drina river in the East and the Vojusa river in the Southeast which is present Albania. The national and political unity of the Croats was upheld and preserved by the common language, Cakavstina; they were ruled by the same supreme governor; they had a joint national assembly which convened very often and they had a common military defense againt the outside enemy. In spite of all these common institutions which denote the national unity of the Croats, each clan had its own governor with its own autonomous government. To prove that the Croats, when they had arrived in the South, had also taken Bosnia and Hercegovina as their permanent homeland, it is sufficient to analyze their social and aristocratic customs and practices. One will unmistakably discover that they are identical with those of the Croatian provinces, and at the same time different from those of the neighboring Serbs who live East of the Drina river. Since earliest times, Bosnia, as an autonomous unit, had for its governor the "Banus", and because of this name Bosnia was called Banus' Bosnia ( "Banovina Bosna" ). This title, "Banus", was specifically Croatian and was unknown either to the Serbs or, for that matter, to any other nation of Medieval Europe. This points out most evidently that Bosnia had ben colonized by the Croats since its earliest times. Who else would have used the purely Croatian title "Banus" for its governor and called Bosnia Banus' country (Banovina) but the Croats themselves.

The country now known as Bosnia and Herzegovina has been part of many different empires and countries over the years. It has had a very confusing history that has at times been very difficult for its people. Before we begin traveling through the years to sort everything out, see if you can find a good map of Europe. Locate the Adriatic Sea on this map. Then find Bosnia and Herzegovina on the east coast of the Adriatic. As you can see, Bosnia is just across the sea from Italy. It is located on what is called the Balkan Peninsula, somewhat to the northwest of Greece. Now, let's use that map as a base as we track the comings and goings of the people who ruled our mystery country. Illyria
About 3,300 years ago, leaders from the Illyrian tribe of people conquered and settled part of what is now Europe. Their empire was based around the east coast of the Adriatic Sea, including the area that is now Bosnia. Many of the Illyrians were pirates, who ventured out on their boats to attack Greek and Roman colonies along the Adriatic's shores. Roman Empire
You can imagine that the Illyrians' raids did not make them popular with their neighbors. About 2,000 years ago, the Illyrians were defeated by Roman armies and all their territory became part of the Roman Empire.

Bosnia: A Short History > Customer Review #1: Disturbingly accurate portrayal of Bosnias past

It is almost sad that the most accurate historic book about Bosnia was writen, not by a person born in Bosnia, but someone born outside its borders. In Bosnia today there are three official versions of history, Bosnian, Croatian and Serb, remnances of which we can see in many loaded comments listed bellow, none of which give Bosnian history respect and accuracy it deserves. They are mostly expansions of the myths and deluded ilusions of people who never thought of Bosnia as their home, their homeland. Unfortunately, as it has happened so many times before, the few were able to tint the picture of Bosnia, not only to the world outside, but also tint the picture of Bosnia to people in Bosnia themselves. It is absurd, but true. Malcolm takes a bold step to clear that picture to both insiders and outsiders and bright the historical perspective closer to the truth.
The author takes a fresh and unbiased look at the centuries of Bosnian history, and most of all he backs it up with an enormous detail and footnote. He is not just speculating, he is listing facts....isnt that something fresh for history of a country, where loudest (and equally sadly most successful) proponents base their entire knowledge on vague narrative and myth.
