History of Tuzla
The evidence of the remotest past of the settlements which has existed in the area of the present-day Tuzla are the remains of archeologically found and investigated cultural layers. The found remains of oldest material culture provide evidence that Tuzla with its close surroundings is one of the oldest settlements in Bosnia-Herzegovina, and that the area of Tuzla's salt water springs has uninterruptedly been inhabited from earliest times - the younger neolithic age to the present day. Starting from the neolithic age to the present day, settlement of Tuzla was always related to its salt resources. The oldest written records behind by the Greeks Aristotle and Strabo say so, also providing that the Ancient Greeks new the region of Tuzla. In his historic writings, the Byzantine historian and cezar Constantine Porfirogenet, around the year 950 mentions the existence of Tuzla's salt water springs and settlements surrounding them. Tuzla was named after its natural resource - SALT. The present day name is derived from the Turkish word TUZ meaning salt. For several many rulers from Byzantinium, Austra-Hungary, Middle Age Bosnia changed in this area. The region was first occupied by the Turks in 1460, and somewhat later - in 1474 the occupation was definite. Within the Bosnian vilayet, Tuzla was under the administrative government of the Zvornik sanjak and it was granted a status of quadiluk with a domicile first in Gornja Tuzla, which was moved to Tuzla proper around the middle of XVII century.

Safvet-beg Basagic Outstanding Muslim-Croatian poet and orientalist The aim of this article is to indicate deep connections between the Croats and Muslim Bosniaks (= Bosnjaci - Muslimani). In order to avoid misunderstanding we shall rather use their descriptional name - Muslim Slavs. The reason is that the Croats in Bosnia are also Bosniaks. Indeed, many of them bear Bosniak as their second name. The meaning of Bosniak is simply - a Bosnian. In the Zagreb telephone book only (1994/95) you can see a long list of as many as 210 surnames of Bosnjak , with only one Muslim forename, and also more than 30 Bosnjakovic 's, with only 3 Muslim forenames. There is village Bosnjaci in Croatia (4,500 inhabitants prior to 1991, near Zupanja). I did not find any village of a similar name on a map of Bosnia. Also in Hrvatsko Zagorje, near Zagreb, there is a small village of

In the Republic of Bosnia-Herzegovina, conflict between the three main ethnic groups, the Serbs, Croats, and Muslims, resulted in genocide committed by the Serbs against the Muslims in Bosnia. Bosnia is one of several small countries that emerged from the break-up of Yugoslavia, a multicultural country created after World War I by the victorious Western Allies. Yugoslavia was composed of ethnic and religious groups that had been historical rivals, even bitter enemies, including the Serbs (Orthodox Christians), Croats (Catholics) and ethnic Albanians (Muslims). Ethnic Groups During World War II, Yugoslavia was invaded by Nazi Germany and was partitioned. A fierce resistance movement sprang up led by Josip Tito. Following Germany's defeat, Tito reunified Yugoslavia under the slogan "Brotherhood and Unity," merging together Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia, Montenegro, Macedonia, along with two self-governing provinces, Kosovo and Vojvodina. Tito, a Communist, was a strong leader who maintained ties with the Soviet Union and the United States during the Cold War, playing one superpower against the other while obtaining financial assistance and other aid from both. After his death in 1980 and without his strong leadership, Yugoslavia quickly plunged into political and economic chaos.

The Balkans Bosnia Bosnia has always been a region perched between east and west. In early Christian times, it was located about half-way between the important cities of Rome and Constantinople. At that time, the world of European Christendom was split into two parts based on those two cities. Religious affiliation also had many effects beyond the spiritual. Alliances were often formed along religious lines, and newly Christianized societies often copied many of the social and cultural institutions of their converters. To the north of Bosnia, the Croats belonged firmly to the sphere of Catholic Christianity in Rome; to the south, the Serbs and Bulgarians were firmly Orthodox Christian and looked toward Constantinople for their religious, political, and cultural models. The beautiful city of Sarajevo grew to prominence as the administrative center for Ottoman Bosnia. The Balkan provinces were very important for the Ottoman Turks, even though they consisted of a bewildering variety of increasingly restless subjects. Bosnia was typical in this regard. The number of Muslims in Bosnia grew over the centuries, to some extent on account of Turkish immigration into the cities but mostly due to the style of conversion discussed above. But as

As part of Yugoslavia, Bosnia-Herzegovina was a founding member of the World Organization from 1922 to 1948. Scouting in Yugoslavia was disbanded by the Communist Regime in 1950. Bosnia-Herzegovina rejoined the World Organization in 1955 as a part of, The Scout Association of Yugoslavia. Bosnia-Herzegovina is divided into two sections as a result of the breakup of the former Yugoslavia followed by the war in Bosnia-Herzegovina. The two are called: the Republic of Srpska and Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. There is one Scout Association in each section. Both Scout Associations have agreed to work together to form a federation and join WOSM together. Both Scout Associations will meet to finalize matters, which will be presented to WOSM for consideration of membership. It is quite possible that they may be accepted as full members before the end of 1999. The two Scout Associations will form the "Council of Scout Associations in Bosnia and Herzegovina". The purpose of this council, is to represent both Associations in WOSM. They will both be able to participate in world events such as World Jamborees, World Conferences and a variety of other activities. The goal of this "Council" is to work towards merging into one Scout Association when the political situation in the country is more stable.
