Adding a bonsai tree as a home accent is a unique decorating idea
When we think of a bonsai tree our first image is that of a dwarf juniper. This is by far the most popular bonsai tree in North America. But there are many more Bonsai trees that are equally and more beautiful. The Chinese Serissa has small white trumpet shaped blossoms and is very beautiful. The Japanese maple, ficus tree or Chinese elm make great bonsai tree gifts. The art of growing and shaping a bonsai tree has been going on for hundreds of years in Japan and china. It is a great form of relaxation and stress reduction. It is very exciting to see the vision we had of the plant take shape over time. In reality bonsai trees are trees planted in a small pot and then over time pruned and trimmed into a desired shape. If this is your first bonsai tree then you should look at the Juniper bonsai tree as the best choice for a beginner.

Australian Plants as Bonsai
Study Group
A Study Group under the auspices of the Association of Societies for growing Australian plants
Allocasuarina torulosa The Bonsai Study Group (APAB) was formed in mid 2001. Its main aims are to:
  • Determine which species are grown as bonsai, Determine the horticultural characteristics of each species, Determine the horticultural requirements of each species, Explore the artistic and aesthetic qualities of species, Publish information to help people grow and enjoy Australian plants as bonsai.
The Group operates by gathering and sharing information amongst members. It aims to produce a minimum of two Newsletters a year, which will include information about the growing of Australian native plants as bonsai. The liveliness of the newsletter depends upon the kinds and level of inputs that members make. Everyone who grows has grown or wants to grow Australian plants as bonsai can contribute. So why not join in! Members and non-members can contribute. Did you know that one of the outstanding impediments of using Australian plants as bonsai is the paucity of images of what entire, old Australian trees and tree-like shrubs look like? If you have or can take photos of such plants, we would appreciate seeing them and publishing them in the newsletter. These images will greatly assist people to style their Australian plants as bonsai to evoke an Australian landscape.

What to Do with Your New Plants
  • Trees in Small Pots Intended for Bonsai
If you purchased your trees with bonsai as the intended use, you must ask yourself how large a bonsai you desire. Little bonsai do not become big bonsai. Plants are trained for a particular size by growing them rapidly in training pots until the desired trunk size is achieved. For most purposes there are three sizes with which you should be familiar, Small (the Japanese word is 'mame', or palm of the hand), usually two to six inches tall. Medium (or 'shohin'), up to ten inches tall. All the larger bonsai up to four feet. If you are happy with the height, trunk caliper, and branching of your small tree, it is suitable for mame immediately. A three to four inch bonsai pot less than one inch deep will be the most suitable. Late winter and early fall are usually the best seasons to shift your small tree to its bonsai pot. Your tree may be wired, pruned and otherwise shaped, but should not be allowed to get very much larger, unless you decide to change its design. Mame require diligent pinching and pruning to keep them from outgrowing their pot. They should be root pruned and repotted once a year, or more for faster growing species. Trees intended for shohin or any of the larger size bonsai should be immediately shifted to a one gallon pot without disturbing the roots, except to slightly loosen them. Allow some time for your tree to acclimate to its new environment by giving it only morning sun for a while, slowly moving it to a brighter location suitable for the species. Dormant deciduous plants may be placed in full sun, or overwintered in the dark if they need to be protected from freezing.

The Larz Anderson Bonsai Collection
Bonsai Care
Following is an outline of the procedures used by the staff of the Arnold Arboretum to maintain the health of the Larz Anderson Bonsai Collection. REPOTTING The smaller the pot, the more frequent the need for repotting. This procedure is best done in early spring mid to late March before the plant shows signs of growth. After the plant is removed from its container, 2 to 3 centimeters (one inch, more or less) of roots plus their attached soil are removed from the sides and bottom of the rootball. Any roots thicker than a pencil are cut off to encourage small feeder roots to develop. This rejuvenates the root system of the plant and prevents lethal girdling roots from forming. After the rootball is trimmed, the plant is returned to its original container, surrounded by fresh soil. The large hinokis are repotted every 4 to 5 years, while the smaller plants are repotted every 2 to 3 years. SOIL MIXES Plant roots are so intimately involved with soil particles that it is best to think of the soil as part of the plant itself. Therefore, time and care needs to go into its preparation. The potting mix should provide for both water retention and air circulation. Our repotting mixes consist of coarse sand (particle size 1 to 3 mm), peat moss or leaf mold, and screened loam, with proportions varying for different plants. In general, we use one-half sand, one-quarter loam, and one-quarter peat for the conifers; and one-third sand, one-third peat, and one-third loam for deciduous trees. In either case, small amounts of superphosphate and organic nitrogen fertilizer are added to the soil mix.
