Australian Bonsai Part 2
Presenter: jane edmanson [3/9/1999]
In Part 1 of Australian Bonsai, (27/8/99) Ted Poynton created a base on which to grow bonsai trees using slate, forming a clay rim to contain the growing medium and attaching wires with which to train the plants.
Now we move on to the actual planting of bonsai. Take the plant out of its pot and remove about two thirds of the root mass. Wrap the remaining third of the root-ball in newspaper or hessian to preserve moisture until planting. Push copper wire into the root mass, and twist it around the main branches so they can be bent and shaped. The copper wire is kept in place until the branches have adopted the required shape, around six weeks, or longer in winter.
One plant or several plants can be used on one slate base. Remember that plants will be viewed from all angles, so position the first plant as if it were growing alone. If planting a group, each tree needs to be able to be viewed from all angles. To create a natural look place them different widths apart. Back-fill using a well-draining potting mix; adding gravel to improve the drainage if necessary. At this stage the wires which were attached to the slate base (seen last week) are criss-crossed over and amongst the plants to hold them in place.
Because the root-ball was trimmed back to a third, so too do the tree tops have to be cut back. A potential problem often mentioned is that native plants do not like their roots disturbed to much, but because these plants have been grown from cuttings, they have a nice fine root system and can tolerate the treatment.

Bonsai is much more than basic planting
By MITCH ARNESEN
Believe it or not, there are some areas of gardening that my expertise does not extend to, but I have read about them and seen pictures. One such area is bonsai, otherwise known as the very old tradition of growing miniature or dwarf plants in containers, and which mixes fine art with horticulture. In Japanese, the word "bon" means tray or pot, and "sai" means to plant. The whole Eastern philosophy of bonsai goes much beyond that, however, embodying a concept where a plant evokes the spirit and oneness of nature vs. simply the more Western view of ownership and dominion. The art of bonsai originated in China almost 2,000 years ago and then made its way to Japan. Because both of these countries were closed off to the Western world for a long time, not that much was known about bonsai until around 1900, and only after World War II did it become more popular in this country.

To keep your plant blooming indoors place in an area where it will receive lots of direct sunlight. Placing your plant directly into full hot sun may burn the leaves.

Bonsais Defined simply, a bonsai is a dwarfed plant growing in a container. The difference between the bonsai and a nursery plant in a 1 gallon can is simply a matter of design. The nursery plant is watered and fertilized to become a full and husky specimen; the bonsai plant is carefully nurtured and trained to develop artistically according to a preconceived plant. It's this artistic design that creates a bonsai that will evolve the spirit of nature.
When you look at bonsai, you;ll notice something beyond the obvious fact that these plants are small. Except for young bonsai-in-training, most specimens seem much older than their diminutive size suggests. And they may also appear to be veterans of years of struggle against natural forces that have significantly altered their forms. Indeed, in some carefully tended specimens the flame of life may appear to be barely flickering.
While it's true that you'll see bonsai specimens older than you are ( in exceptional cases, even older than several generations of your family), not all good bonsai plants are old. Actual age is of less importance in bonsai than the illusion of age.
Some plants may actually have lived for years in the wild before being collected and nurtured as bonsai. But many specimens that appear to be ancient are really works of art- products of the human hand working with nature to produce the appearance of age. This carefully designed look is an integral part of the various bonsai styles

BONSAI is an ancient oriental horticultural art. It combines shape, harmony, proportion and scale. Reporter NATALIE CAMPBELL talks with two Masterton people who have both been growing bonsai for more than 20 years. (Pictures by PETE COLVIN )

MASTERTON bonsai enthusiast Claire Ross used to have between 400 and 500 bonsai plants. Now she has about 100 but each one has a very different character and looks like it has its own garden world.
Interest
An alternative to growing the plants in straight soil is entwining them in rocks, but Mrs Ross warns not to use rocks from the sea as the salt can damage or kill the plant.
Homes
Moss is also good at growing and covering the base of the plant, giving it a lawn-like appearance.

Glory of Bonsai The word bonsai literally translates to "planted in a pot or tray." Though the word is Japanese, the art itself has far deeper roots, so to speak. In many countries where space is at a premium, trees and forests in their natural settings are sometimes rare. In order to experience the feeling of nature and the beauty of trees found in the wild, the art of bonsai was born. The art of bonsai is the art of imitating the spirit of nature. It has as one of its basic elements the idea of balance, of bringing all the elements of tree growing, of line and form, into an elegant and pleasing effect. The word also carries connotations of patience, since there is no such thing as instant bonsai. Creating the appearance of aging is another of the basic tenets of any good bonsai gardening. Many such bonsai plants take many years to train and grow to achieve the effect intended by the practitioner. Bonsai has become to most of us a Japanese art of dwarfing trees,

Bonsai...
The millennia-old art form, still going strongly today!
In Japanese, bonsai can be literally translated as 'tray planting' but since originating in Asia, so many centuries ago - it has developed into a whole new form. To begin with, the tree and the pot form a single harmonious unit where the shape, texture and colour of one, compliments the other. Then the tree must be shaped. It is not enough just to plant a tree in a pot and allow nature to take its course - the result would look nothing like a tree and would look very short-lived. Every branch and twig of a bonsai is shaped or eliminated until the chosen image is achieved. From then on, the image is maintained and improved by a constant regime of pruning and trimming. It is the art of dwarfing trees or plants and developing them into an aesthetically appealing shape by growing, pruning and training them in containers according to prescribed techniques. Overall, bonsai is a great interest, hobby or even profession to undertake. Although famous theologians have claimed that it is actually 90% art to a meager 10% of horticulture, it has to be said that a successful bonsai is most definitely a horticultural masterpiece.
