46. Selecting Flowering Plants For Christmas Gifts
I have seen a good number of bonsai plants in stores, some already trained, and for a smaller price you can buy a newly started plant.
http://gardenline.usask.ca/plants/x-mas.html
Selecting Flowering Plants for Christmas Gifts GardenLine House Plants Tom Ward Ward is a staff member of the Department of Horticulture Science, University of Saskatchewan. This column is provided as an extension service by the Division of Extension and Community Relations and the Department of Horticulture Science, University of Saskatchewan. The most common Christmas gift plant by far is the poinsettia. This large, colourful, long-lasting plant seems to increase in popularity every year. The usual colours for this plant are red, pink and white; however, a new creamy yellow variety called lemon drop may find its way into Saskatoon stores this Christmas Other Christmas gift plants include the Jerusalem cherry, a compact plant with red fruit. The fruit is slightly smaller than a quarter and stays attractive on the plant for about a month. Similar to the cherry is the Christmas pepper. It also has attractive red and sometimes white or purple fruit. Of course, when you think Christmas you also think of the Christmas cactus, an easy-to-grow house plant and also a fairly nice gift plant. The cactus is in the stores now and ready to bloom. Choose one that has some small buds that will develop later, or most of the bloom will be finished by Christmas. Two other lesser known gift plants come to mind that you might consider, Norfolk Island pine is a pine-like plant native to New Zealand and the Norfolk Islands. It can be grown as a year-round house plant. After many years it will become as large as six feet high or more. Under outdoor (non-freezing) conditions, it is a tree. As a gift plant the Norfolk Island pine can be the Christmas tree that is decorated each year. It is very attractive and not nearly as great a fire hazard as the true pines, fir and spruce usually purchased as Christmas trees.

MABUHAY - Welcome to Bonsai in the Philippines Most of the trees used for Bonsai in the Philippines are local trees like Ficus, Kalyos (Streblus Asper),Orange Jasmin, (Muraya Paniculata), Philippine tea, Bantigue (Pemphis Acidula), Lantana, Tamarind, Camagong (Philippine Ebony), Camachile (Pithicolodium Dulce), Bignay, Yangya, Pyracantha, Bouganvilla, Lemoncito. Many of these are collected trees and trained as Bonsai Although Bonsai (as we know it today) is a fairly new hobby in the Philippines there is some evidence to show that Chinese immigrants were growing Balete trees (a local term referring to ficus) onto corals in the 15th century. They would insert the roots into the coral's crevices and place them onto water basins until the roots clasped the host corals. The arrangement were small enough to be carried by one hand. The tree would in a certain time of the year be leafless as if dead, but only to shoot out new buds that symbolized the Resurrection of Easter Sunday. Since trade between the Philippines and China had been ongoing centuries before the Spaniards came, it would not be far-fetched to think that this art was already flourishing even before then. (Relacion de las Islas Pilipinas by Fr. Pedro Chirino, S.J. 1604)

PLEASE SCROLL DOWN FOR PLANT, ORDERING AND SHIPPING INFORMATION Plant Sizes: Our plants are well rooted cuttings, seedlings or divisions in 2-3/4 inch square plastic pots unless otherwise noted. You will find our plants are larger and more established than most mail-order starter plants. Many of our trees have 1/4 inch or larger trunks, are well branched and have been shaped for bonsai where appropriate. They are grown in a soil-less mix and shipped in the pot. A few plants are available in larger sizes, this is denoted as FOUR INCH POT, ONE GALLON SIZE (or larger). Most of our ONE GALLON SIZE plants are be shipped semi-bareroot to reduce the shipping weight; this practice does no harm and actually makes replanting easier. Planting instructions are included with each order. ONE GALLON SIZE PLANTS WILL BE SHIPPED WITH SOME SOIL REMOVED TO REDUCE WEIGHT Our bonsai plants are selected for interesting trunks and most have been pruned several times. Plant sizes marked: 'Pruned especially for bonsai' means that the plant has been trained as a small tree with most of the lower branches preserved and the large upper branches pruned or removed. These are pre-trained plants and make your job of creating a nice bonsai easier and faster. These plants may also be grown out as landscape plants or larger bonsai with no detrimental effect.

    Figure D
Figure E Bonsai is the art of growing miniature trees in decorative pots. Bonsai can live for more than 100 years, and are passed down from generation to generation. For indoor bonsai trees, select tropical plants that are suitable for indoor cultivation. Brush cherry ( Syzygium paniculatum ) is often used for indoor bonsai plants. The new foliage is bright green, maturing to a rich green or sometimes copper. It produces small white flowers in the summer and berries in the fall. Brush cherry requires bright light. Sheflera, too, make worthy indoor bonsai ( figure A ), and like lots of light but make sure it's indirect. To keep bonsai plants small, gardeners prune as needed and keep their trees pot-bound and growing in soil mixes that are relatively low in organic matter. The soil mix should be a blend of peat moss, perlite and limestone with a small amount of slow-release fertilizer and a handful of water-holding polymer crystals. Crush the crystals before adding them to the soil mix so the particles will be very small. Bonsai plants need constant monitoring for moisture and may need to be watered daily. Choose a decorative shallow pot for displaying bonsai plants ( figure B ). Make sure that it has drainage holes and a matching saucer to catch water. Cover the drain holes with a piece of plastic window screen, then place a small amount of the soil mix in the bottom of the pot. Make sure that the tree is well watered before you begin the transplanting process.

    Bonsai Basics
Gardening by the Yard : Episode GBY-202

A well-developed bonsai offers great architecture and character.
A bonsai's visual strength and character are exemplified by massive surface roots, a large trunk, interesting bends, shapes and twists and the placement of limbs (even dead ones).
Bigger bonsai aren't necessarily older specimens. The plant on the left is six years old; the one on the right is more than 10 years old. Figure A Figure B The difference between a bonsai and any other potted plant, says expert Michael Raska, is that a bonsai has been artistically styled over time to look like a tree in nature but in miniature form. Getting started with bonsaithe art of growing dwarfed, ornamentally shaped trees and shrubs in shallow potsis pretty simple, explains Raska, who owns a bonsai nursery in Oklahoma that houses up to 30,000 specimens. Growing bonsai plants takes commitment, rather than a lot of work. Consequently, he says, people tend to form bonds with their bonsai.

    The Basics of Bonsai Care
    The Insider's Garden : Episode TIG-201

This blooming rosemary plant, which may live for more than 100 years, has been trained into the weeping style of bonsai. Bonsai, or "tree in a pot," is the Japanese art of miniaturizing trees and shrubs. Bonsai plants, which often live more than 100 years, can make unusual and beautiful additions to indoor decor. (Trees and shrubs that are miniaturized generally grow outdoors, but they can be brought inside for the weekend or other times when you will be spending more time inside.) Here are some tips for caring for bonsai in your home:
    • Bonsai have small, confined root systems and need to be watered more frequently than a regular houseplant. They should be watered at least once a day, perhaps more often in an extremely dry environment or during the winter when heating systems dry the air.

    59. Containers For Bonsai
bonsai plants must be anchored to their containers until the roots take hold. One method used to anchor the plant is to tie it down
    http://www.peak.org/~cscottc/bonsai-site/bons-nfr7.htm
    Containers for Bonsai
    Training Pots
Most plant material for bonsai has long roots that will not fit into a bonsai container. For this reason a training pot is used. The training pot is larger than a bonsai container and holds the heavy roots, which are gradually cut back, for a period of years until small, fibrous roots develop. All kinds of containers are used for training pots: clay saucers, plastic containers, and wooden boxes of many different sizes. Many of these clay and plastic pots are available at garden centers. The azalea pot and the bulb pan are especially suitable. The pot should be just large enough to accommodate the tree's root system. It should be similar in shape to the bonsai pot, which will eventually replace it. For example, an upright tree, destined for a low, flat container, should be grown in a fairly low training pot. A cascading tree, to be planted later in a high bonsai pot, should be trained in an ordinary flowerpot. Make sure that all training pots you use have drain holes at least 1/2-inch in diameter.
