The front garden borders are filled with narcissus for spring colour and 90 different hardy bush fuchsias for summer and autumn. The rear garden borders are filled with bulbs and hardy flowering perennials. It's crammed full of plants, so it's easy to maintain, i've always said the more plants you have the less weeds you get.

The Basics of Bonsai Care
The Insider's Garden : Episode TIG-201

This blooming rosemary plant, which may live for more than 100 years, has been trained into the weeping style of bonsai. Bonsai, or "tree in a pot," is the Japanese art of miniaturizing trees and shrubs. Bonsai plants, which often live more than 100 years, can make unusual and beautiful additions to indoor decor. (Trees and shrubs that are miniaturized generally grow outdoors, but they can be brought inside for the weekend or other times when you will be spending more time inside.) Here are some tips for caring for bonsai in your home:
  • Bonsai have small, confined root systems and need to be watered more frequently than a regular houseplant. They should be watered at least once a day, perhaps more often in an extremely dry environment or during the winter when heating systems dry the air.

by Susan Amoy Succulent plants are fascinating in their diversity of form. In the wild, they range from towering trees, such as Moringa ovalifolia, to inch-high "living stones," like Lithops karasmontana. Many succulents, such as aloes, sedums, and kalanchoes, have become staples in the American garden and home. Now there is growing interest in applying bonsai techniques to succulents. Though it may seem like an odd matchup, bonsai practice can contribute much to our knowledge of succulent species, and succulents make interesting and unusual additions to bonsai collections. Adult Moringa ovalifolia tree in the wild, Namibia. Bonsai is an ancient art form that seeks to re-create nature in miniature. It was born out of a deep appreciation for the natural world and a desire to convey the spiritual power and beauty of the larger landscape to more confined domestic spaces. Its practitioners developed proven methods for pruning and shaping plant specimens to exhibit the forms of adult trees molded by their natural environments. There are many reasons why succulents make ideal subjects for bonsai. Native to tropical and semitropical arid regions around the globe, many species are naturally small or undergo "dwarfing" in the wild due to harsh conditions. Growing slowly from crevices and rocky ground and enduring abrasive winds, erratic water supply, dramatic fluctuations in daily temperature, browsing by animals, bright sunlight, and thin, fast-draining soil, mature succulents can actually end up looking like bonsai.

Definition:
Originally, the term bonsai simply meant a plant grown in a container. Today, it has come to mean a miniaturized plant, shrub, or tree in a planter. This miniaturization process is achieved by planting in a smaller than-normal container and by judicious pruning to make the plant resemble its larger counterpart in nature.
Indoor
How often the soil and container should be changed will depend on the species, age, and condition of the plant. A good mixture of soil for bonsai consists of 1 part compost, 1 part sand, and 1 part indoor potting soil. Finished indoor bonsai can be purchased or you can train your own from seed, cutting, or started plant. The best plants for indoor use are Weeping Fig, Serissa, Azalea, small leaf Schefflera, Jade Plant, Fukien Tea, Ming Aralia, and Chinese Zelkova. Hardy Bonsai: Bonsai Styles: Training Bonsai: Recommendation: Join a bonsai society to learn the intricacies of this art form from experts and enthusiasts. Or visit one of the finest collections of Chinese and Japanese bonsai in North America in Montreal, Quebec at The Montreal Botanical Garden, 401 Sherbrooke Street East. Mangrove Trees Find
Mass-Market Appeal
By A MY C HOZICK
Staff Reporter of The Wall Street Journal From The Wall Street Journal Online May 11, 2004 Plant lover Joy Hochschild thinks orchids can be finicky and cut flowers don't last long enough. But she says the 5-inch-tall mangrove tree she received recently as a gift isn't just exotic it's practical. "It's doing wonderful, with lots of growth in a little amount of time," the Detroit artist says. Potted mangrove plants miniature versions of tropical trees that can tower as high as 100 feet in wetlands are finding a new habitat on fireplace mantles and kitchen windowsills. These 3-to-5-inch stunted versions have become popular with homeowners because they're easy to care for: They require only medium light, a warm room and one or two inches of standing water. Retailers are starting to push these trees which have short green stems, only a few leaves and exposed roots as the next hot houseplant. Whole Foods Markets began selling $14.99 mangrove plants at two of its stores (in Framingham, Mass., and Manhattan) in early March and sold more than 75% of its inventory in three weeks. Some 24 Whole Foods Markets in the North Atlantic region will carry the plants within the next few weeks. Target began selling the tropical plants for as much as $14.99 across the country in January.
