"A truly detailed guide to bonsai, as an art, hobby and horticultural practice."
    Bonsai...
The millennia-old art form, still going strongly today!
In Japanese, bonsai can be literally translated as 'tray planting' but since originating in Asia, so many centuries ago - it has developed into a whole new form. To begin with, the tree and the pot form a single harmonious unit where the shape, texture and colour of one, compliments the other. Then the tree must be shaped. It is not enough just to plant a tree in a pot and allow nature to take its course - the result would look nothing like a tree and would look very short-lived. Every branch and twig of a bonsai is shaped or eliminated until the chosen image is achieved. From then on, the image is maintained and improved by a constant regime of pruning and trimming. It is the art of dwarfing trees or plants and developing them into an aesthetically appealing shape by growing, pruning and training them in containers according to prescribed techniques. Overall, bonsai is a great interest, hobby or even profession to undertake. Although famous theologians have claimed that it is actually 90% art to a meager 10% of horticulture, it has to be said that a successful bonsai is most definitely a horticultural masterpiece.

How to care for your bonsai
Bonsai, a delight in miniature gadening. How to instructions on choosing plants and methods employed in growing Bonsai. Great tips for beginners.
Bonsai, gardening on a miniature scale, is a wonderful alternative if you have limited space. Bonsai, literally meaning Bon (tray) Sai (plant) was begun around the third century B.C. by the Chinese. Later adopted and developed into an art form by the Japanese. Pronounced Bahn Sy' it is a way to grow many different kinds of plants indoors or out all in containers. America discovered this gardening delight approximately 50 years ago. Bonsai plants may be cultivated using many different species. Evergreens such as ficus, natal plum, or flowering types as azaleas, apricot, plum, and pomegranate, or outdoor species of conifers, spruce or pine trees bodyOffer(22151) are all suitable for growing in containers, pruning, and the art of wiring the plant to change its appearance. The basics of how to grow your own Bonsai are relatively simple. Choosing the plant is the most important. Consider if it is going to be outdoors or indoors, the amount of light available and the temperature or humidity of the locale its place in. For outdoors you would want to use the more hardy plant materials as the conifers. Pine and spruce are the most common. Indoors you can choose the more tropical plants, as the ficus and natal plum. For the flowering species or deciduous plants a mixture of both indoor and outdoors at the time of seasons is a good choice, as you can alternate by taking them inside during the winter months and when all danger of frost is removed, they can go outdoors for sunlight and fresh air.

National Bonsai and Penjing Museum Timeless Trees The miniature masterpieces that we call bonsai and penjing are the pinnacle of gardening skill, and the National Bonsai and Penjing Museum has one of the largest collections of these timeless trees in North America. The Japanese art of bonsai, and its precursor, the Chinese art of penjing, are rooted in the traditions of Asian culture. The placement of branches, styling, and the pot all convey deep symbolism and reverence for nature. The National Bonsai and Penjing Museum began when Japanese bonsai enthusiasts in the Nippon Bonsai Association donated 53 bonsai to the people of the United States to commemorate the U.S. Bicentennial in 1976. The collection has grown steadily with the addition of pieces from American bonsai masters and penjing from China. Today, three pavilions house about 150 plants. The International Pavilion is a focal point that celebrates the related art forms of viewing stones and ikebana, a Japanese style of flower arranging. Throughout the year, you may also find exhibits featuring the work of local bonsai enthusiasts and pieces from the permanent collection with special seasonal interest in the International Pavilion. Be sure to also vist our online Bonsai Virtual Tour The concept of an internationally acclaimed collection of bonsai and penjing was conceived by former Arboretum Director Dr. John Creech in 1972. In 1976, the Nippon Bonsai Association of Japan bestowed on the American people a gift of 53 bonsai and six viewing stones. The Japanese Pavilion was constructed as a result, and became the home of the new specimens. The collection grew again in 1986 with the gift of Chinese penjing from Dr. Yee-sun Wu and Shu-ying Lui. The construction of the Dr. Yee-sun Wu Chinese Pavilion recognizes this important gift and provides a home where his gift can be properly displayed. The growing popularity of bonsai in North America was recognized with the construction of the John Naka North American Pavilion. In it resides one of the most extensive and diverse collections of bonsai from masters in North America, including American master John Naka's

    Australian Bonsai Part 2
    Presenter: jane edmanson [3/9/1999]
In Part 1 of Australian Bonsai, (27/8/99) Ted Poynton created a base on which to grow bonsai trees using slate, forming a clay rim to contain the growing medium and attaching wires with which to train the plants.
Now we move on to the actual planting of bonsai. Take the plant out of its pot and remove about two thirds of the root mass. Wrap the remaining third of the root-ball in newspaper or hessian to preserve moisture until planting. Push copper wire into the root mass, and twist it around the main branches so they can be bent and shaped. The copper wire is kept in place until the branches have adopted the required shape, around six weeks, or longer in winter.
One plant or several plants can be used on one slate base. Remember that plants will be viewed from all angles, so position the first plant as if it were growing alone. If planting a group, each tree needs to be able to be viewed from all angles. To create a natural look place them different widths apart. Back-fill using a well-draining potting mix; adding gravel to improve the drainage if necessary. At this stage the wires which were attached to the slate base (seen last week) are criss-crossed over and amongst the plants to hold them in place.
Because the root-ball was trimmed back to a third, so too do the tree tops have to be cut back. A potential problem often mentioned is that native plants do not like their roots disturbed to much, but because these plants have been grown from cuttings, they have a nice fine root system and can tolerate the treatment.
