Anon wrote~ I love bonsai and bought a little one, but I have no clue how to grow them! A. What follows is a general outline of the various procedures used by the staff of the Arnold Arboretum to maintain the Larz Anderson bonsai collection in a healthy condition. REPOTTING: The smaller the pot, the more frequently the plant needs repotting. This procedure is best done in early spring, mid-to late March, before the plant shows any signs of growth. The plant is removed from its container, and approximately two to three centimeters (one inch, more or less) of roots, plus their attached soil, are removed all around the sides and bottom of the root ball. Any roots thicker than a pencil are cut away to encourage the development of small feeder roots. This process effectively rejuvenates the root system of the plant and prevents lethal "girdling" roots from forming. After the root ball is trimmed, the plant is returned to its original container surrounded by fresh soil. The large hinokis are repotted every four to five years, while the smaller plants are repotted every two to three years. SOIL MIXES: Plant roots are so intimately involved with soil particles that it is best to think of the soil as part of the plant itself. As such, a great deal of time and care needs to go into its preparation. In general, the potting mix should provide the plant with a balance of water retention and air circulation. Our repotting mixes consist of coarse sand (particle size 1-3 mm), peat moss or leaf mold, and screened loam in various proportions depending upon the plant being grown. In general, we use a mix that is one-half sand, one-quarter loam, and one-quarter peat for the conifers; and one-third sand, one-third peat, and one-third loam for deciduous trees. In either case, small amounts of superphosphate and organic nitrogen fertilizer are added to the soil mix.

Advice
Bob and Pam Hampel went from amateurs to authorities in the ancient art of bonsai, thanks to a rainy detour at the State Fair. (excerpted from the January 2003 issue of Northern Gardener) Text by Lenore Franzen Photo by John Noltner Bob and Pam Hampel agree bonsai are mystical. What else would explain their captivation-some would dub it an obsession-with growing tiny trees in pots? Over the past few decades, the Hampels have painstakingly cultivated a stunning bonsai showcase in the backyard of their Hugo home . The 40,000-square-foot space contains nearly 400 bonsai, and is one of the the Upper Midwest's largest private collections of the plants. It wasn't always this way, however. Twenty-five years ago, Pam only dabbled in perennials and Bob couldn't, in his words, "grow dandelions." That changed when, to earn "husband points," Bob dutifully schlepped to the Minnesota State Fair at Pam's request. Rain forced them into the nearest dry space, which happened to be the Horticulture Building, where the Minnesota Bonsai Society had an exhibit." By the time it quit raining, we had signed up for workshops," recalls Bob. "We so enjoyed those that we stopped at a nursery on the way home, bought a couple trees apiece and butchered them up."

to come "The book "Bonsai School" was in my mailbox two days ago. The best thing I can say about the book is that after just a couple of pages I started saying to myself, " I didn't know that". After 23 years of bonsai it was great to see a book that was teaching me new things page after page. The book is a beautiful book. It is the first book that I believe that I could use "as is" as a text book to teach a very complete course on bonsai. I'm not certain how you will produce a "College of Bonsai" but I want a copy as soon as it's off the press. It is going to be a very successful book with a long shelf life at the stores." Joe Day

Glory of Bonsai The word bonsai literally translates to "planted in a pot or tray." Though the word is Japanese, the art itself has far deeper roots, so to speak. In many countries where space is at a premium, trees and forests in their natural settings are sometimes rare. In order to experience the feeling of nature and the beauty of trees found in the wild, the art of bonsai was born. The art of bonsai is the art of imitating the spirit of nature. It has as one of its basic elements the idea of balance, of bringing all the elements of tree growing, of line and form, into an elegant and pleasing effect. The word also carries connotations of patience, since there is no such thing as instant bonsai. Creating the appearance of aging is another of the basic tenets of any good bonsai gardening. Many such bonsai plants take many years to train and grow to achieve the effect intended by the practitioner. Bonsai has become to most of us a Japanese art of dwarfing trees,
