    Bond
A debt investment, with which the investor loans money to an entity (company or government) that borrows the funds for a defined period of time at a specified interest rate
The indebted entity issues investors a certificate, or bond, that states the interest rate (coupon rate) that will be paid and when the loaned funds are to be returned (maturity date). Interest on bonds is usually paid every six months (semiannually). The main types of bonds are the corporate bond, the municipal bond, the treasury bond, the, treasury note, treasury bill, and the zero-coupon bonds.
The higher rate of return the bond offers, the more risky the investment. There have been instances of companies failing to pay back the bond (default), so, to entice investors, most corporate bonds will offer a higher return than a government bond. It is important for investors to research a bond just as they would a stock or mutual fund. The bond rating will help in deciphering the default risk.

Contrarian Perhaps the only thing that institutional investing has in common with ice cream vending is that there’s always a “flavor of the month” in both fields. The current “flavor of the month” in money management is absolute return-oriented investing, which is typically pursued via hedge funds. Long-only equity managers are recasting themselves as hedge fund jockeys, consultants are scrambling to boost their hedge fund selection skills, and academics are publishing countless articles about hedge fund selection and monitoring. In short, everyone who is “anyone” in institutional investing these days is focused on hedge funds. With this as preface, we would like to talk to you about: US government bonds A Better Way Specifically, we are encouraging eligible institutions to gain bond exposure through TIFF’s new Government Bond Index Fund (GBIF). The GBIF will be benchmarked against the Lehman Government Bond Index, which comprises exclusively US Treasury and agency debt. The fund will be managed passively by State Street Global Advisors. Although the fund’s expense ratio will be competitive by industry standards (as low as 0.35% depending on fund assets), the fund will not play games in an attempt to recover its operating expenses. (A very prominent index fund benchmarked against the Lehman Aggregate Bond Index regularly overweights corporate bonds – a practice that enabled it to earn enough incremental income in some years to offset its expenses but that has proven disastrous by index fund standards in 2002.)
