Investment Products Fixed Income Risks of Fixed Income Investing Despite the generally conservative nature of many fixed income investments, such as investment grade-quality bond funds and money market funds, and the tendency of fixed income investments to be more predictable than stocks, investors should be aware that bond funds and individual bonds do carry some degree of risk. Bond funds achieve diversification by holding many securities, so are generally less risky than individual bonds in that regard. However, there are some risks that may apply to both investments, as noted below. Interest Rate Risk Credit Risk Inflation Risk Call Risk ... Fixed Income Glossary Interest Rate Risk If interest rates rise, bond prices usually decline. If interest rates decline, bond prices usually increase. This risk exists because new bonds are likely to be issued with higher yields as interest rates increase, making the old or outstanding bonds less attractive. The longer a bond fund's maturity, the greater the impact a change in interest rates can have on its price. If you don't hold your bond until maturity you may experience a gain or loss when you sell your bond. Top Credit Risk Bonds carry the risk of default, which means that the issuer is unable to make further income and principal payments. Many individual bonds are rated by a third party source such as Moody's or

Bond fund managers can buy a variety of bonds, with a variety of grades and maturities. However, the bond funds are usually grouped by the average ratings of the bonds the fund holds, as well as the average maturities of those bonds. Historically, corporate bond funds have sought to provide:
  • Attractive yields
  • Dependable income
  • Diversity for the portfolio

Just as stock investments may be conservative (in large, established, financially stable companies)or aggressive (in small, start-up and other less stable companies), bond types vary. Treasury, municipal, corporate, mortgage and other bond types also vary from conservative to aggressive. Bond Maturities
  • At a bond ’s maturity date, the issuer is required to repay the original loan. Maturities are generally defined as short-term (fewer than five years) intermediate-term (five to ten years) and long-term (more than ten years).
  • Generally, longer-term bonds pay higher income because investors are loaning, and therefore tying up, their money for a longer period of time.
  • In bond fund investing, fund maturity is determined based on the average maturity of all the bonds in the fund.
Bond Fund Benefits
  • Diversification Allocating a portion of your assets to bond funds may cushion your portfolio during stock market downturns. No two investment types can be expected to perform the same way at the same time, and when stocks are down, bonds may be doing well, and vice versa.

Paperless Savings Bonds
The Treasury is launching a conversion from paper bonds to an online format. You'll be able to set up an account through the Treasury website. The account, known as Treasury Direct, will allow you to buy your bonds online and keep track of their value anytime you'd like. But, there are some other changes you should be aware of.
Treasury Direct
Buying Bonds You can still buy bonds through a bank, but now you can also purchase them online. The Treasury website will walk you through the steps required to set up an account online and buy the bonds. Tracking Bonds Your account will allow you to log onto the Treasury website at any time, day or night, and check into your investments. Redeeming Bonds Currently, you can redeem your bonds whenever you want. Often, people hold onto them longer than they should, after they've matured and are no longer earning interest. If you set up a Treasury account, the government will redeem your bonds for you the day they mature, and deposit the money into your online account. Your taxes on your investment will become due at the end of the year. Dollar Amounts Vary Currently, you must buy bonds in fixed denominations, because they are printed up in advance. With the online accounts, the amount can vary, and need not be a round amount.

Before deciding to purchase bonds, keep in mind that while bonds are typically less risky than stocks, inexperience and nondiversification still put the beginning investor at a disadvantage. Information about bonds may be helpful to the beginning investor who is interested in bond mutual funds or who plans to invest in bonds now (with competent advice) or at some future point.
Bonds as debt
A bond is actually a loan. When you purchase a bond, you are loaning money to the corporation or government entity that issued the bond. In return you are paid interest on the loan, usually semi-annually. The interest rate is fixed and stated at the time the bond is issued. If bond certificates are actually issued, the interest rate will be stated on the bond certificate. Under the terms of the bond, at the end of the loan period, the borrower will pay back the full amount borrowed and the bond is said to have matured . Sometimes the borrower will pay back the loan early. If this is the case, the bond industry would say the bond has been

    Bond Funds
"Bond fund" and "income fund" are terms used to describe a type of investment company mutual fund closed-end fund , or Unit Investment Trust (UIT)) that invests primarily in bonds or other types of debt securities. Depending on its investment objectives and policies, a bond fund may concentrate its investments in a particular type of bond or debt security—such as government bonds, municipal bonds corporate bonds , convertible bonds, mortgage-backed securities, zero-coupon bonds —or a mixture of types. The securities that bond funds hold will vary in terms of risk, return, duration, volatility, and other features. A common misconception among some investors is that bonds and bond funds have little or no risk. Like any investment, bond funds are subject to a number of investment risks including:
  • "Credit risk" This is the risk that the issuers of the bonds owned by a fund may default (fail to pay the debt that they owe on the bonds that they have issued). This risk may be minimal for funds that invest in insured or U.S. Government bonds. "Prepayment risk" This is the risk that the issuers of the bonds owned by a fund will prepay them at a time when interest rates have declined. Because interest rates have declined, the fund may have to reinvest the proceeds in bonds with lower interest rates, which can reduce the fund’s return. (Not all bonds, however, can be prepaid.)
