Home Personal Finance Investing in Tax-Free Municipal Bonds Investing in Tax-Free Municipal Bonds
Adapted From: Personal Finance For Dummies, 4th Edition Towns, cities, and regional and local agencies issue municipal bonds. Municipal bonds usually have lower interest rates than comparably rated corporate bonds and Treasury securities. The minimum amount required for investment in municipal bonds is $5,000, and municipal bonds are sometimes issued at a discount. This discount compensates investors for the additional risk that these bonds may have due to the financial difficulties of some local governments. The most important feature of municipal bonds is their tax-exempt feature. In subsequent judgments based on the 1819 McCullough v Maryland ruling, the Federal, state, and local governments don't possess the power to tax each other. Consequently, municipal bonds can't be subject to Federal tax. Additionally, income from state and local municipal bonds can't be taxed if purchased within the geographic area. For example, Virginia residents don't pay state taxes on Virginia bonds. However, residents of California are subject to state income taxes on their Virginia bonds. The tax-exempt feature makes municipal bonds very attractive to investors in high tax brackets. You treat capital gains on such bonds as normal income.

As cyberinvesting moves into the mainstream, individuals are demanding a broaderrange of services, including the ability to shop for bonds online.
http://investing.wsj.com/bonds-body4.html
Buying Bonds Online Several years into the boom in online trading, which took root in the stock market in the mid-1990s, electronic trading had yet to make any significant penetration in the bond market, accounting for less than 5% of the overall trading volume. Many online brokers purport to offer bond trading, but investors will be disappointed if they expect to see systems that mirror electronic stock trading, where orders to buy and sell are fully automated and don't require human intervention. See a sampling of Bond Tools from SmartMoney.com For the majority of firms, bond trading is done the old-fashioned way. Although a customer can get some information online, he or she must phone in buy and sell orders to a representative, who then tries to fill the request from the firm's own inventory or by calling around. And service is usually limited to actively traded Treasury bonds or exchange-listed corporate bonds. For others, online bond trading is no more than an e-mail service. Yes, customers can place an order electronically, but then the bond market's low-tech roots become apparent, as a broker takes over and tries to fill the order just as if it had been phoned in. Only a handful of brokers offer any sort of automatic order execution to individual investors, and that service is still extremely limited. Electronic bond trading has been slow to reach the level of online stock investing, partially because it wasn't a high priority for either investors or brokers.

Shopping for Bonds Online
Mention online investing and most people think stocks. But interest in Internet bond-trading is growing, and firms are moving to catch up.
FOR INDIVIDUAL INVESTORS who want to buy and sell bonds online, there still aren't that many choices for making actual trades and getting helpful information. Punch "stock investing" into an Internet search engine like Yahoo! and you're likely to be overwhelmed by the response. But type the words "bond investing" and you'll be lucky to find a handful of worthwhile Web pages. Many bond sites on the Internet are geared toward institutional investors and professional brokers. They either restrict access to their powerful research and information and other analytical tools to licensed professionals, or, in most cases, those tools are simply too expensive for individuals. Many sites that allow electronic bond trading over the Internet (or through proprietary dial-up networks) require hefty minimum transactions, which many individuals won't be able to afford. However, some sites are useful and accessible to individual investors. Some are hosted by brokerage firms, while others are watered-down versions of sites run for professional bond traders by commercial data vendors. These sites allow individuals access to information on bonds that only recently was available to just professionals, including delayed and real-time quotes from some dealers. Some are even paving the way for retail investors to execute transactions with the click of their computer mouse.

Our Perspective on Bond Investing Why Bonds?
Over the past few years, in the wake of the bear market in stocks, investors have shown new interest in bonds and bond funds. The largest and best-known pension and endowment funds have always relied on bonds for a significant percentage of their assets. They do so because bonds can provide a portfolio with real returns above inflation, and help temper the ups and downs associated with pure equity investing. In fact, Mosaic's portfolio managers have earned a national reputation for bond management. Their goal is to provide benchmark or better returns at a risk level below their benchmarks. While this sounds like having your cake and eating it too, managers can achieve this goal by carefully monitoring the outlook for interest rates and shifting strategy accordingly. Bonds come in various shapes and sizes. The main categories are: Government Bonds -issued by the federal government and its agencies. These bonds are considered less risky than corporate bonds, and as a result pay less income.

Executive Vice President and
Portfolio Manager Click here to read David Hinman's biography. David Hinman manages global credit portfolios for PIMCO and is an expert in analyzing the relative value of corporate bonds across the globe. We spoke to him about the benefits of investing in corporate bonds globally and about PIMCO’s growing global credit practice. Q: Let’s start with an overview of PIMCO’s global credit strategy. What is the strategy’s focus? Hinman: What we mean by global credit is just that: credit risk. We don’t mean mortgages and we don’t mean asset-backed securities. The strategy’s benchmark is the credit component of the Lehman Global Aggregate Bond Index, which is primarily an agency and corporate bond benchmark. Q: How is the global credit strategy different from PIMCO’s global bond strategy? Hinman: The global bond strategy that is managed by our global team of Sudi Mariappa, Mike Asay and Ken Miller, is almost exclusively macroeconomic in its orientation, in terms of adding value—probably somewhere in the neighborhood of 75% to 80%. The global credit product is the exact opposite because about two-thirds of the value-added in global credit comes from individual security selection based on our analysts’ fundamental and analytical work on the relative value of different companies, as well as our sector orientation.

Those issued by the government include T-bills, Treasury notes and Treasury bonds. Municipal bonds are issued by a city, county, state, school, or park district for constructing roads, bridges, schools, libraries, airports, and so on. Now that the roaring bull that was the stock market has been put out to pasture, let us turn our attention to bonds and bond mutual funds. With investors accepting the sad reality that stock values can drop as fast as they may rise, bonds beckon as a lower-risk alternative - albeit one with a less exciting growth potential. "Lower-risk investments like bonds have a role to play in any long-term investment portfolio because they provide diversity," said Erik Rosdahl, a private investor from Malibu, Calif. "The down side is that lower risk means lower income, but nobody wants to jeopardize all the eggs in the basket. Hedging your bets is the only way to offset overall risk." A bond is a debt obligation not unlike an IOU. The purchaser actually lends money to the bond issuer for a fixed period at a set rate of interest, which is why bonds are known as fixed-income securities. Bear in mind that bonds are a credit risk because the issuer could default. Bonds also entail an interest-rate risk. If you purchase a bond paying 5 percent and rates rise to 7 percent, the market value of your bond has fallen compared to other bonds available at the newer, better rates.

Ruth Anne Mears Generally, "savers" and "investors" have different objectives for their money. "Savers" plan to use their money in the next 3-5 years, while "investors" won't need their money for five years or longer. Many "savers" want liquidity or quick access to their money without penalty. Bonds provide a desirable saving or investment vehicle for many reasons. Bonds tend to be safer than stocks because if you hold bonds until the maturity date, you don't risk the principal. Plus, bonds can provide a regular, steady source of income (typically, interest payments are received every 6 months). For the long term, investors need to be willing to "tie up" money when investing in bonds. However, bonds tend to have a lower return than stocks over the long term.

World Wide Web Bonds as an Investment Of the various forms of investment vehicles , bonds are a way to invest by loaning money to an entity such as a corporation or the government, whether federal, state or local. In return for your loan, you may receive interest at a fixed rate for a fixed period of time. The period of time can range anywhere from a few months to over 20 years. When the bond matures (the specified time period is over), you receive your original investment amount back. With some types of bonds, such as U.S. savings bonds or zero coupon bonds, you get all your interest when the bond matures because you buy the bond at a discounted price and receive the full face value when it matures. In general, when interest rates go up, bonds decrease in value. Conversely, when interest rates go down, bonds are more valuable because their interest rate is higher than the interest rate available for other investments. Therefore it is important to understand that the

Brady-Bonds can be summarized on this site:
  • Buy stocks of companies that have disciplined plans for achieving dramatic long-term growth in both profits and revenues. Such companies must also have inherent qualities that make it difficult for new entrants into that business to share in such growth.
  • Brady-Bonds prefers to focus on such companies when they are out of favor; i.e., market conditions are not favorable or the financial community does not properly perceive the true worth of such companies.
  • Hold the stocks that you buy until there has been either a fundamental change in the company's nature or it has grown to a point where it will no longer be growing at a faster rate than the economy as a whole. He also says that investors should never sell their most attractive stocks for short-term reasons.
  • If your primary investment goal is long-term appreciation of capital, then you should de-emphasize the importance of dividends.
  • Recognize that making mistakes is an inherent cost of investing. The important thing is that the investor must be able to recognize such mistakes as soon as possible, understand their causes, and learn from them so they are not repeated. A willingness to take small losses in some stocks while letting profits grow bigger and bigger in your more promising stocks is a sign of good investment management.
