Bolivia Information Bolivian Regions Bolivian Cities Lake Titicaca ... Return to South America Revised: 30 Jan 2004 Information Bolivia sits in the heart, the geographic center, of South America. One of the hemisphere's two land-locked nations, Bolivia is roughly the size of Texas and California combined. Diverse and rugged geography has slowed the country's economic development. Travel by ground is at best difficult, with more than 75% of Bolivia's roads unpaved. Most roads are located in the west, on the Altiplano, in the Andes and in the highland valleys known as the Yungas and Chapare. Consequently, our adventures will occasionally take you to villages and towns that have been secluded for centuries.  The diversity of the topography is awesome: majestic, snow-capped peaks of the Andes mountains, lush and impenetrable jungles, sweeping desert plains and broad fertile valleys. This inaccessibility is responsible for another reason to visit, to see Bolivia's impressive flora and fauna. Primitive roads have retained the pristine state of immense tracts of land. This ancient land is the home of the pre-incan Tiahuanaco ruins and the world famous Lake Titicaca - the highest lake in the world. As legend has it, Manco Capac and Mama Oclio, the ancestors of Incan culture, rose from its depths to bring knowledge to humanity.  Bolivia is also rich in human diversity. More than 30 ethnic groups together account for more than 50% of Bolivia's population. The age-old customs, fiestas and culinary treats of the Aymara, Quechua, Tupi, and Guarani cultures are ever-present. Bolivia is the fifth-largest country on the continent with five geographical regions (click for a physical map of Bolivia):

hr = escape(window.location.href); Geography Bolivia is situated in the centre of South America. It encompasses 424,194 square miles and has borders with Brazil to the north and east, with Argentina to the south, and with Peru to the west. On the southeast of Bolivia lies the border with Paraguay, while to the southwest lies that with Chile Climate Although all of Bolivia is located within the Tropic of Capricorn, the country enjoys the full spectrum of existing climates. The temperature is not only regulated by geographical location, but also by the altitude above sea level; temperatures are lower at higher altitudes and higher at lower altitudes. Due to its proximity to the Equator, the four seasons are not marked with much differentiation in contrast to other continents. The variation of temperatures between winter and summer is less than 10 degrees C. Economic geography Until 1986 the production of minerals such as tin, gold, silver, zinc, lead and others constituted the economic basis of Bolivia. However, the drop in prices in the international markets obligated the state to close important mining companies for the purpose of levelling its balance of payments. Currently, Bolivia's economy thrives on minerals, livestock and agro-industrial riches.

The Bolivian gas endeavor began with unilateral trade with Argentina. However, in January of 1996, the Paraguayan and Bolivian presidents signed an agreement proposing a new pipeline and natural gas trading agreement. Plans for constructing another pipeline to Chile have also been in the making, but have been difficult. However, the Brazilian project is by far the most lucrative agreement, and has contributed to a grandiose new scheme taken on by Enron of creating one continental gas grid, with Bolivia as the natural gas hub supplying neighboring countries. To complement this now regional endeavor, Bolivia has recently changed its status in MERCOSUR from that of an associate state to a full membership contract. On February 29, 1997, a new free-trade zone will slowly begin to be built between Bolivia and the MERCOSUR countries, to be completed in eighteen years. This new economic partnership can only help the pipeline project. Currently, Bolivia has 7.2 trillion cubic feet in natural gas reserves, a number expected to rise sharply once unexplored areas are tapped. Estimations for the length and width of the Bolivia- Brazil pipeline are 2,100 miles and 36 inches. The Bolivian government owns 60% of the pipeline within its borders and 20% within Brazil. The consortium of financiers; PETROBRAS (Brazilian Petroleum), the BTB consortium (British Gas, Tenneco Gas, and Australia's BHP Petroleum), and YPFB in conjunction with U.S. partners Enron and Shell, will be financing a project worth roughly US $2 billion. Of these, Enron will be primarily in charge of construction. The company hopes to break ground in the first half of 1997 and to finish by 1999.

ESTIMATED 2000 POPULATION CLIMATE: Bolivia has a tropical climate, although the difference in altitude produces a variety of different climatic conditions. Generally, both temperature and rainfall increase from west to east. The Altiplano is inhospitable for most of the year while the Yungas has a semitropical climate and the Llanos becomes drier to the south. The wet season is from December to January and because of the country's seasonal variations both floods and droughts are common. The prevailing winds include the rain bearing winds from the Amazon Basin and the Surazos which is a dust laden wind that blow across the plains. Average temperature ranges in La Paz are from 1 to 17 degrees Celsius (34 to 63 degrees Fahrenheit) in July to 6 to 19 degrees Celsius (43 to 66 degrees Fahrenheit) in November. PEOPLE: The principal ethnic majority are the AmerIndians who account for around 42% of the population, of which 25% are Quechua and 17% are Aymara. In addition, 32% of the population are Mestizos who are of mixed AmerIndian and Spanish descent while 15% are Whites mainly Spanish and 2% are Black Africans.

Rural-urban migration in Bolivia: advantages and disadvantages
"Good" rural-urban migration could help solve Bolivia's problems and should be encouraged Andersen, L.E. / Instituto de Investigaciones Socio-Económicas (IISEC), Universidad Católica Boliviana, La Paz, Bolivia This paper examines rural-urban migration in Bolivia. Its central argument is that the negative effects of rural-urban migration are significantly smaller in Bolivia than in other Latin American countries and that the benefits are potentially large. The paper examines the impact of Bolivia's geography, history and population on urban-rural migration. It looks at the major costs of urbanisation and shows how the major problems are less in Bolivia. It examines reasons for migration and analyses the situation and performance of each group of migrants. It then discusses "good" and "bad" migration and how policies can be developed to encourage "good" migration. The paper concludes that urban-rural migration is not a problem in Bolivia either for the migrants or the host cities. It argues that migration can address a number of problems faced by Bolivia, namely:
