It was enhanced, however, during the colonial period by the use of softer materials. That was how Tito Yupanqui, in 1576, sculpted Our Lady of Copacabana. Years later, during the 17th century, Diego Quispe Curo, bequeathed his Cristo Atado a una Columna, or Christ Tied to a Column. It was also during this era that gold and silversmithing reached their maximum splendor. One of the most exquisite examples is

Bolivia – Vice Ministry of Culture The Vice Ministry of Culture in Bolivia is responsible for documenting not only the cultural heritage found in museums but, more urgently, for coordinating the documentation and transfer of information concerning colonial/religious art works from Indian churches in the Andean highlands. The problem of organised crime in relation to this aspect of cultural heritage required a rather different approach to using ObjectID than that confined to the collection of one particular museum.
The Catalogue Centre of the Vice-Ministry of Culture has already documented 15,000 works of art in various churches, and plans to add information on another 15,000 early/late colonial paintings. Collections

The colonial art in question was produced from the sixteenth through the nineteenth centuries. There is great criminal demand for two categories of art: paintings mostly by anonymous artists (initially Spanish, later Indian and Mestizo), often depicting the saints; and silverware in the form of altar goods and ex-votos. Both these forms of art were used to adorn the village church of any reasonably sized settlement. Beautiful, well-decorated churches became an important sign of status and prestige as Christianity was brought to the Andes. A number of important schools for med, such as those in Quito and Casco.

    Background
... The Andean Cosmovision of the Kallawaya - Bolivia The Andean Cosmovision of the Kallawaya - Bolivia
The Andean cosmovision of the Kallawaya culture is a coherent body of beliefs, myths, rituals, values and artistic expressions that provides an original vision of the world. This distinctive world view, derived from belief systems of ancient indigenous peoples, is manifested through traditional medicine, whose virtues are widely recognized not only in Bolivia but in the many South American countries where Kallawaya priest doctors practice. This healing art involves an exceptionally deep understanding of animal, mineral and botanical pharmacopoeia and a corpus of ritual knowledge intimately linked to religious beliefs. The Kallawaya ethnic group, based in the mountainous Bautista Saavedra region south of La Paz, traces its roots to the pre-Inca period. A number of their practices and values derive from the fusion of pre-Hispanic and Christian religions that characterizes many aspects of Andean life and culture. According to the indigenous language consulted, the term kallawaya means "land of doctors" or "herbalists from the sacred land of medicine". The principal activity of the Kallawaya is the practice of ancestral medical techniques linked to rites and ceremonies that form the basis of their local economy.

Country Profile - Bolivia We consider Bolivia to be the undiscovered gem of South America. It possesses the same diversity, charm and excitement as its Andean neighbors, but surpasses them in its untouched beauty and culture Powerful mountain ranges offer endless trekking and mountain climbing options, while the altiplano (high-plains) cities of Sucre and Potosi are a wealth of colonial culture and history. The Lake Titicaca region is surrounded by pre-Incan ruins and exceptional scenery, and located just a short drive from the capital city of La Paz. You'll be able to wander through the famous witchcraft market, as well as some other handicraft markets located in the city. As with most Andean countries, you'll find Bolivia offers exceptional trekking on Incan and pre-Incan trails. Several of our treks offer the unique combination of starting at high elevations (15,000' and higher), but gradually descending into the sub-tropical Yungas region of lush tropical foliage and rushing streams. For those looking for a "off the beaten path" natural history experience, you'll also find a lush wetlands area, tropical rainforests and remote salt flats full of unique flora and fauna.

Hotel Bolivia : The Culture of Memory in a Refuge from Nazism > Customer Review #2: Enlightening insight into story of Jewish refugees in Bolivia

When many think of the land locked country of Bolivia, they think of narcotics, Nazis and natural resources. Few think of Jews. But to Jews fleeing Europe after the Anschluss of 1938, Bolivia was the place about which to think. Bolivia offered a safe haven in a world of closed doors; at least 20,000 Jews found refuge in La Paz, Sucre, Oruro, Cochabamba during the War. Leo Spitzer, a Professor of History at Dartmouth and specialist in cultural memory and gender studies, was born in La Paz in 1939, his parents having just fled their beloved Vienna. His book, Hotel Bolivia, succeeds in providing an enlightening look at the little known story of the Jewish refugee community in Bolivia; and also, for the most part, Spitzer accomplishes his goal to craft a meditation on the nature of individual and collective memories and the ability of people to adapt to their new environment.
