Who Are You? Prospective Students Accepted Students Advisors/Faculty Parents ... Requires free Adobe Acrobat Reader Stretching from the tropical Amazon to the soaring Andes, Bolivia's diverse landscapes and populations offer amazing contrasts-as well as significant challenges to development. While the increasingly influential Quechua and Aymara peoples make up the majority of Bolivia's population, an urban-based Mestizo minority remains the dominant power in Bolivian society, resulting in economic policies that often exclude many Bolivians. Throughout its history Bolivia has been an impressive social laboratory with a multitude of examples of grassroots activism and struggle for social justice. Not only a laboratory for social movements, Bolivia has been a testing ground for development theories by large and small development organizations for decades. Visits to development agencies and seminars on the history of Bolivian social movements enhance your understanding of this predominantly indigenous nation. The SIT program explores the key roles played by cultural processes, identities and resources in defining who implements and who receives development, what resources are made available and how.

Country Info Bolivia Introduction Bolivia General Data Bolivia Maps Bolivia Culture ... Bolivia Time and Date Bolivia Culture Back to Top Bolivian society in the late 1980s remained fragmented along lines of region, ethnic affiliation, and class. Profound differences existed between the Andean area and the eastern lowlands. With the exception of the Santa Cruz area in the lowlands, the Andes remained the most heavily settled region. The lowlands had a distinct culture, ecology, and economic history, reflecting in part a long history of isolation from most of national life. The 1952 Revolution and subsequent far-reaching changes affected the lowlands and highlands in strikingly different ways. Indians made up more than half of the population in the late 1980s; mestizos and whites accounted for most of the remainder. Each of these groups differed widely in worldview, language, and way of life. For most of Bolivia's history, Indians lived in isolated rural communities where they remained socially and politically marginal. Whites and mestizos controlled the land and commerce and dominated the countryside where most Indians lived. A regionalism reinforced by strong geographic barriers further contributed to this ethnic diversity. Changes beginning in the 1950s broke down much of the traditional isolation of Indian communities. Land reform, increased educational opportunities, universal suffrage, and improved transportation brought Indians into greater contact with national society and undermined the hegemony of whites and mestizos. These changes also permitted a modicum of social mobility.

Bolivia History
Much of Bolivia's history has centered around its mineral wealth, particularly silver. Vast quantities of the precious metal were discovered in Potosi shortly after the Spanish conquered the region in the early 16th century. Exploiters poured in and forced the indigenous people to work in the mines. To help the miners endure long hours and abysmal conditions, the Spanish encouraged the chewing of coca leaves, a practice that eventually became an integral part of Bolivian culture. African slaves were forced to work the mines as well. (Many of the slaves escaped - their descendants are concentrated in the Yungas and other lowland regions.) Independence was won in 1825, with the help of South American revolutionary Simon Bolivar. At that time, the country was much larger than it is today. Over the next century, Chile captured Bolivia's coastline; Brazil took a section of rain forest (and a large number of rubber trees); and during the Chaco War of 1931-1935, Paraguay grabbed land in the Gran Chaco region.
