41. The Journey Home With Therapeutic Massage And Body-Work
The Journey Home With Therapeutic massage and bodywork. The following is from one client about her experience of coming to receive massage / body-work from me.
http://www.uktherapists.com/articles/lifestream/1997/6/03.htm
The Journey Home With Therapeutic Massage and Body-Work
by Christine Evans When I learned massage on my first professional training in 1990 I certainly wasn't taught what I know now about its value and transformational qualities. Even if I had been it would probably have sounded like Russian to me at the time. Working as a massage therapist for the last six years has been a very enlightening and personal journey for me and I can share with you my view point as to what massage and body-work is about. There are many different levels at which massage can take place, and with each of my clients I aim to negotiate and review that contract. Just what is it you want from coming to see me? How will you know if we have been successful? What specific changes, if any, would you like to make? When someone is ready to release the held emotions in the body, they will do so. I cannot make that happen. My approach is on allowing allowing the body to release and to heal as and when the person feels safe and ready. As with any form of therapy I am also working with many layers of protection and defense, many of which may be hiding considerable amounts of pain and anger. So the journey home is always taken at the client's pace, building up safety and trust along the way. On a very simple level massage is about positive affirmation of who we are, our essence. And this is done physically which may by-pass long held mental beliefs such as "I am not lovable". A positive message is communicated through the touch which can reach into the subconscious and thus be part of increasing someone's sense of well- being and self confidence.

Many of us rely on these forms of therapy to deal with every day stresses, to reenergize, and to become balanced. Millions of Americans consider these therapies a necessity. Numerous studies have documented that Massage Therapy and other types of Bodywork have an impressive range of physical, mental, and emotional benefits which we have listed below: Most of the visits to primary care physicians are for stress related complaints such as headaches, backaches, neck pain, anxiety, as well as physical and emotional exhaustion. Massage has an amazing effect on the body's nervous system. Complementary and Alternative Medicine including Reiki
Various forms of massage and body work have been part of the practice of healing for over 5,000 years. Hippocrites affirmed the benefits of massage, and the need for its skilled use by physicians. It was used by the ancient Greeks and Romans. Forms of bodywork exist in every world culture.
The health benefits of massage have been well documented. Shiatsu, an acupressure based form of massage therapy, rolfing, and craniosacral therapy, are increasing in popularity. They also have a growing body of scientific research to support their health benefit claims.
What is bodywork?
Bodywork is defined as the process of using physical touch, including kneading, manipulation and/or application of systematic pressure and friction to the body, for the purposes of relieving and/or preventing mental, emotional and physical symptoms. In addition to physical touch, some bodywork methods also use and adjust our body's natural energy (see Energy Work Section above).

Mac users: please note that our site is optimized for the Safari browser Complementary medicine Rolfing- body work Originally Published: April 28, 1995 Alice, My wife is interested in a massage method know as rolfing. Do you have or do you know where I may find information about it? Bodywork Dear Bodywork,
Rolfing does not actually fall into the category of massage. Massage serves to remove metabolic waste from muscle tissue, while rolfing focuses on lengthening and realigning connective tissue which wraps around muscles. Rolfing is considered deep tissue body work and is used to increase a person's range of motion, increase lightness and freedom in the body, increase energy, and reduce pain. Most people who seek rolfing therapy are motivated either by pain, or by a sense of tightness and restriction in their body. Rolfers view the connective tissue as the fabric net supporting the body, and they concentrate on how the connective tissue in the head, shoulders, rib cage, and lower back, are aligned and where imbalances lie. The target of the therapy is the loosening and lengthening of chronically shortened connective tissue to bring the body into better balance and alignment. Tissue becomes shortened following injury or trauma to the area, through repetitive use of certain muscles, or by always using certain postures. Not every person needs the same type or amount of rolfing therapy, however advocates say that some form of rolfing can potentially benefit anyone. The rolfing movement began approximately 40 years ago in America by Ida Rolf, and it reached the popular culture in the late 1960's through the Human Potential Movement which was active in California at the time. For more information about rolfing, you can contact the Rolf Institute at P.O. Box 1868, Boulder, Colorado 80306, phone (303) 449-5903 or 1-800-530-8875. They can give you the names and phone numbers of certified rolfers in your city. There is also a book called "Ida Rolf Talks" by Rosemary Feitus that discusses the technique.

I believe in all forms of massage and bodywork when I work on my clients. One must be able to know and perform as many kinds as possible for their client. Massage and Bodywork is a calling I believe or a gift to pass onto others in need. I am real believer in the eastern arts medicine. I believe in the power of the human touch not machines. I am a purist in massage and bodywork. Our hands came first before needles and machines. A honest hand shake and a good honest loving caring hug is better than just saying hello! One must have a connection with the one you are trying to help. I am a spirit lead bodyworker. I am a total energy healer from power from above.

This means that therapists in the area of body work must know the body very well, and many of them take massage qualifications, both because of the excellent

BODY WORK Again we have a number of approaches: bioenergetics, vegetotherapy, biosynthesis, biodynamic psychology, neo-Reichian work, Radix education, Hakomi therapy, Lomi body work, Hellerwork, Rolfing, postural integration, Tragering, Feldenkrais method, bio-release, Alexander technique and so on. Much of this work stems ultimately from Wilhelm Reich, and we may lead into it by considering his approach. What Reich said was that a natural energy normally flowed through the body. This energy could be blocked at various points, usually where the segments of the body (he distinguished seven segments) joined on to one another. These blocks might have been set up originally as defences to some forbidden impulse or some painful trauma, and might be maintained as part of the person's character structure. By working on these blocks and releasing the energy, the person might be made more healthy and happy. This makes it sound as if character, which we usually admire, were highly suspect, and Reich actually said that character is neurosis. In other words, we are responding to the world and acting in it either in an appropriate way, which stays in close contact with reality, or in a more rigid or floppy or otherwise inappropriate way. To the extent that it is the latter, Reich would see the undue rigidity or floppiness (or whatever) as neurosis, and would seek to undo the blocks which might be responsible. This general approach has been adapted and extended in a number of ways by humanistic practitioners. One of the main schools where this has been done is in bioenergetics, led by Alexander Lowen, who has been to this country a number of times. Bioenergetics lays particular emphasis on grounding, and has many exercises concerned with making better contact with our legs and feet and what they mean to us. Stress positions are used to stir up valuable material which may be connected to the person's energy blocks.

is the act of manipulating the soft tissues of the body to normalize those tissues, and has been shown to be helpful in conditions ranging from fibromyalgia to acute soft tissue injuries. Massage usually involves applying touch with some degree of pressure, so the massage therapist must use touch with sensitivity to determine the optimal amount of pressure appropriate for each person. Because touch is also a form of communication, sensitive touch can convey a sense of caring, which is an essential element in the therapeutic relationship. 3405 Flagler Ave Key West, Florida 33040 (305) 296-8935
