Body Work
Body Work
Body Work is more than just a massage, it's a whole concept. Body work theororizes that within our anatomy, is a story of unresolved problems and past traumas both physical and psychological. Body Work is a massage technique where deep, hard pressure is applied to the acupressure and related points of the blockages (in the body). This form of body work massage frees the client to release tension and feelings; is usually done through yelling, crying, muscular vibrations, release then followed by an overall sense of well being.
A body work session begins with breathing exercises. (Preferrably with a selected partner) While breathing, the client's eyes are closed. (Inhalations and exhalations are monitored.) Downward pressure is then applied to the intercostal spaces between the client's ribs. Concurrently, feelings of sadness or joy may be revealed and released during this part of the body work therapy.
Body work focuses on the upper body first; gradually massaging downward. Chi breathing is utilized through the duration of the massage session to evoke feelings from within. Employing Chakra massage and gentle touch to balance energy in the body; body work "frees" the body of stress, tension and aids in overall well-being.

It is the responsibility of the Cambridge Public Health Department to enforce the regulations governing the practice of massage therapy/bodywork in the city. The purpose of the regulations is to ensure that only individuals who meet and maintain minimum standards of competence and conduct are able to provide services to the public. In an effort to promote public health, the CPHD requires that all massage therapy/bodywork practitioners and establishments be licensed prior to offering their services to the public. In order to qualify for a license to practice massage therapy/bodywork in the City of Cambridge, one must demonstrate competency by passing the National Certification Exam, complete a 500 hour training program and maintain a membership in a CPHD approved association. A student/apprentice practitioner permit is available to those that are enrolled in a training program and have completed more than 250 of the 500 required training hours. All massage therapy/bodywork establishments must be inspected prior to licensure. The establishment inspections are conducted every two years or anytime the conditions of an establishment change. The inspection checks for general safety and sanitation issues and ensures that the massage therapy/bodywork practices conducted in the establishment can be done in accordance with the regulations. All practitioner and establishment licenses are issued and renewed on an annual basis. The fee for a practitioner license is $50. The fee for a home office or professional office establishment providing the services of one provider is $25. The fee for a training school or professional office establishment providing the services of two or more practitioners is $50.

She skillfully weaves together the influence of India and China to illuminate the unique quality of this ancient and powerful form of bodywork. She offers precise instruction on how to move through sequences developed by master healer Pichest Boonthumme, never forgetting that the most important ingredient in a successful treatment is compassion. This book is an important contribution to preserving an oral tradition that has had little written documentation. Lori Brungard, codirector of Ashtanga Yoga Shala, NYC

by Leslie Aguillard , RN, CRRN An hour of peace and quiet, pleasant music, healthful oils nourishing your skin and the experienced hands of a good therapist can do wonders for your outlook and your physical well being. For those of you who have not either tried massage or found a massage therapist who could actually ease your aches and pains, listen up. A typical Swedish style massage is equivalent to a four mile walk - your circulation improves, your lymph moves toxins out so that they can be eliminated from your body, you are refreshed and relaxed. And, if you haven’t exercised in a while or had a massage in a long time, you might even be a tad sore the next day, the good kind of sore from having done something physical. This can be alleviated by taking a nice hot mineral bath of salt and baking soda afterwards plus drinking a lot of water. These will help flush the toxins that cause soreness out of your body. Some people want deep massage and don’t feel like they’ve gotten a massage unless they feel it to their bones - neuromuscular massage therapy is a deep therapy specifically designed to treat pain from over exertion or injury. Others want to just be relaxed and meditative - you will need to communicate with the therapist if you feel any discomfort. If you are taking any sort of pain medication it is best that you do not take it prior to going for a massage because you would not be able to tell the therapist if some move was too deep or painful and then the next day you might feel uncomfortable as a result.

Massage works mainly with muscles. It utilizes various techniques to release tension in muscles anywhere in the body. While some massage can be done on a clothed body, it is preferable to work directly on the skin. Massage can be divided into 2 general categories: therapeutic and relaxation. Therapeutic massage is used on specific areas of injury or dysfunction. It is effective in relieving pain and restoring mobility. Usually the sessions are of shorter (20 - 45 minutes) duration and only specific areas of the body are treated. Relaxation massage recognizes the importance of releasing tension throughout the body. We often don’t even realize how much tension we hold in certain areas until we have the experience of it being released. A full-body massage takes anywhere from 1-2 hours. This kind of massage is sometimes called holistic massage or holistic bodywork. I offer a relaxation massage which is often described as Esalen technique. It is based on Swedish massage strokes but incorporates a strong intuitive sense about what the individual needs. While it physically works on the muscles, there is an implicit awareness that there are always emotional, psychological and spiritual aspects present. Depending on the client, we may talk about any or all of the factors that are influencing him/her at the time. At other times I sense that it is not appropriate to address underlying issues directly, so I work with them silently. I also use aromatherapy oils to assist in the treatment.
