Camp MeadowWood
Residents and staff of Carolina Meadows Retirement Community welcomed 22 excited, wide-eyed children aged 6-13 to their campus in July for the last two-week long session of Camp MeadowWoods 2002 Season. Camp MeadowWood, previously known as the OPC (Orange, Persons, Chatham Counties) Children's Therapeutic Summer Camp, now recognizes both Carolina Meadows and Carol Woods Retirement Communities for their sponsorship of this unique program that combines therapy and the fun of camp. The OPC Foundation for Mental Health sends 60 children to Camp MeadowWood through donated scholarships. These children, challenged by emotional and behavioral problems and/or developmental disabilities, might not otherwise have the chance to experience summer day camp most children take for granted. Camp MeadowWood is unique. Not only do mental health professionals staff it, but it is an intergenerational camp as well. During the week over 45 Carolina Meadows residents and staff planned and participated in sports, workshops, and special activities with the children. For grandparents and great grandparents it was a natural interaction and the children responded to the special attention and caring very quickly.

77. Q A
either a bocce ball or jack. 7 Q Is bocce a team or individual sport? A Both. Disciplines for teams are Pairs, classic bocce
http://www.seattlebocce.com/html/q_a.html
Frequently Asked Questions and Answers
Q: What is bocce? A:
The aim of the game is to place ones bocce balls as near as possible to a target ball that is called the jack. The opponent, in turn, attempts to place his bocce balls nearer to this jack or to move the bocce balls that prevent him from doing so. Q: How many bocce styles are there? A: There are three main bocce sport systems played today: Volo (Lyonnaise) Raffa , and Petanque . Besides these three bocce sport systems, there is also fourth one, so called English bocce or lawn bowling.
All of these systems have some common characteristics and rules. However, the differences among them are significant and relate to types of shots, equipment, courts, rules, athletic elements, speed, etc.
Though there are three distinct bocce systems, the subject of this project is VOLO bocce system. VOLO system is the most dynamic and demanding of the bocce types played. It is very attractive and requires incredible precision, strong athletic capabilities, concentration, and fast and correct decision-making based on excellent knowledge of a variety of game strategies. Q: What is bocce equipment?

Bocce
Bocce is a competitive game that can be played one-on-one, in pairs, or in teams of three. It is played on a specially marked court, usually with a hard surface. The object of the game is to throw or bowl game balls so that they land as close as possible to a special target ball. The game begins with a player throwing the white target ball onto the court. Opponents then take turns trying to throw or bowl their game balls as close as possible to the target ball. When all the game balls have been thrown, a referee determines the points awarded to individuals or teams based on a measurement of how close the game balls are to the target ball. Bocce is an official sport of the National Disability Sports Alliance (NDSA), the Dwarf Athletic Association of America (DAAA) and Special Olympics International (SOI). Two modified versions of bocce are commonly played: precision bocce and Special Olympics Bocce.
Benefits of Playing Bocce
Bocce can be enjoyed by persons of all ages and persons with a wide variety of disabilities. It can be played for recreation, as a competitive sport, or for physical education in school programs. The game requires planning and strategy in trying to place game balls for maximum scoring. It also can develop or increase hand/eye coordination. Finally, bocce is an activity in which individuals with severe disabilities can participate and develop high levels of skill. The game can be easily adapted to allow players with functional limitations to use chutes and ramps to place their game balls into play.

What is the history of Bocce?
The only fact for sure is that bocce is a game that is centuries old. Several descriptions with similarities can be found on the Internet. One version of the history of bocce published by the Wonderful World of Bocce Association on their website is as follows: "The beginnings of the game of bocce are lost in the darkness of time. Traces of the game can be found among the early Egyptians, and graphic representations of figures tossing a ball or polished stone have been recorded as early as 5200 B.C. While modern day bocce bears little resemblance to these early findings, one thing is certain: that through its evolution the objective has been constant - try to come as close to a fixed target as possible. From this early objective, the basic rules of bocce were born.
Bocce must have been part of the therapeutic advice given by the early Greek physicians Ipocrates and Galileo who indeed believed that the invigorating exercise provided by this game could have beneficial results. It is said that the early Romans were among the first to play the game, at times using coconuts brought back from Africa. Later on, hard olive wood was used to carve out bocce balls. Quickly gaining status, there are indications that bocce was enjoyed by such luminaries as the emperor Augustus.
