Physical Education
The Physical Education Program is designed to instruct students in sports and fitness activities, while ensuring all students are prepared in basic lifesaving skills through our Community First Aid and CPR class. While serving the diverse needs of our students, the purposes of basic instruction are to develop a commitment to lifelong physical activity; to guide students toward fitness and health, and to provide an environment in which students enjoy participating in physical activity.
Requirements:
Physical Education each term, grades nine through twelve, unless replaced by
team membership or an approved "out of school" or "athletic" contract.
Certification in Community First Aid and CPR (grade 11)
The physical education program recognizes the wide range of abilities and interests of its students and seeks to offer choice and flexibility in its offerings, while maintaining optimal standards and requirements. Students will choose either Concepts of Physical Fitness or Life Sport when planning their schedules for the coming year. Registration for particular activities within the unit selected will be conducted each trimester within the Department of Physical Education. Registration will take place on the first day of scheduled classes each term. Registration in the department is for these purposes: (1) for credit to be conferred for team participation; (2) for approval of an "out of school" or "athletic" contract;* and (3) for selection of primary choice of activity within the selected unit and/or, (4) selection of Community First Aid and CPR. (Seniors who are not certified will automatically be placed in a CPR class.)

Sports For All
The competitive events offered through NDSA have been organized with careful criteria to maximize the true sports nature of the competitions involving individuals with physical disabilities. NDSA holds clinics throughout the US where individuals who wish to serve as competition officials must demonstrate their abilities.
Along with six other national disability sports organizations, NDSA is a Community Based Organization (CBO) member of the United States Olympic Committee, joins such national groups as the YMCA, Jewish Community Centers, the Boys and Girls Club and similar organizations to form the CBO Council. The NDSA board of directors has begun an aggressive national marketing campaign to reach out to any and all individuals who could benefit from participation in sports, recreation and fitness activities and increase athletic membership, especially among youth. The NDSA firmly believes in the importance of youngsters with disabilities capitalizing on their abilities and potential athletic success.

PROGRAMS AND SERVICES The Plymouth-Canton Community Schools offer a variety of programs and services for students receiving special education. Once the student has been evaluated by a Multidisciplinary Evaluation Team (MET), an Individual Educational Program Team Committee (IEPT) is then convened for the purpose of determining eligibility. After eligibility for special education has been established, the IEPT develops goals and objectives and decides what programs and services are appropriate to meet the educational needs of the individual student. Placement decisions are based on the principal of least restrictive environment and may range from a general education placement to an out-of-district center based specialized classroom program. The following is a list of some of the special education programs and services offered in the Plymouth-Canton Schools.
ADAPTIVE PHYSICAL EDUCATION SERVICES
Adaptive Physical Education provides instruction of basic sports and recreation skills without emphasizing competition to impaired individuals while keeping their disabilities in mind. Middle School Healthy living and daily fitness techniques including flexibility and exercise are emphasized.

Boccia
Boccia is a competitive game that can be played one-on-one, in pairs, or with teams of three. It is played on a specially marked court, usually with a hard surface. The goal of the game is for players/teams to throw/bowl game balls so that they get them as close as possible to a special target ball. The game begins with a player throwing the white target ball onto the court. Opponents then take turns trying to throw/bowl their game balls as close as possible to the target ball. When the game balls have all been thrown, a referee determines the points awarded to individual or teams based on measurement of how near the game balls are to the target ball.
Boccia is an official sport of the United States Cerebral Palsy Athletic Association (USCPAA), the Dwarf Athletic Association of America (DAAA), and Special Olympics International (SOI). (see links below) There are two modified versions of boccia that are commonly played: Precision boccia and Special Olympic Boccia.
BENEFITS OF PLAYING BOCCIA
Boccia is an activity that can be enjoyed by persons of all ages and persons with a wide variety of disabilities. It can be played for recreation, as a competitive sport, or for physical education in school programs. The game requires planning and strategy in trying to place playing balls for maximum scoring. It also can develop or increase hand-eye coordination. Finally, boccia is an activity in which individuals with severe disabilities can participate and develop a high level of skill. The game can be easily adapted to allow players with functional limitations to use chutes and ramps in order to to place their game balls into play.

Aims
Participation Choices Awards The aim of the Knox Senior School sports program is to develop every student to his potential. If that is to represent Australia, the School will seek to facilitate this ability. For example, Scott Elsworth is a Paralympian in Bocce; John Turner, Peter Bromley, Michael McNair and Ryan Perkins played rugby for the Australian Schoolboys; athletes Chris Shute, Gareth Watkins, John Morison and Richard Baird competed for NSW at the National Track and Field Championships while ex-students Jarrett Tunnicliffe and Michael Warren-Gash have represented NSW in the Under 17 State Volleyball team. Olympian Matthew Dunn leads the names of swimmers who have passed through our aquatic program with many others nationally ranked. The philosophy remains the same for middle and less strong students, to help them develop their skills and fitness while enjoying their sport. Development Officers in major sports are attempting to enable all to reach their potential in this important area of the curriculum. Active participation in team and individual sports is an integral part of Knox.

Athletics
Aquatics Badminton Bocce ... Judo With 18 official sports and three demonstration sports, it's easy to understand why the 2003 Special Olympics World Games is the biggest international event - sporting or cultural - yet staged in Ireland. From athletics, as with the summer Olympics the core of the games, to Bocce, the Italian version of bowling, there are events to challenge the full range of sporting skills and abilities. Of the 18 official sports, 14 are based around individual entries, while the remaining four are classified as team sports. The three demonstration sports are kayaking, pitch and putt, and judo, and are likely to be included as official sports in the next games. Athletes may participate in only one sport, and can only enter events appropriate to their level of training. Just like the summer Olympics, it is the taking part and not the winning and losing that is emphasised, although there are awards from first through to fourth, presented as gold, silver, bronze and the fourth place ribbon.
