Program Choices for Athletes Motor Activities Training Program

Emphasizing training and participation rather than competition, the Motor Activities Training Program (MATP) was developed to provide a sports experience for those with severe and profound disabilities. It is part of the commitment by Special Olympics to offer sports training to eligible athletes of all ability levels. Sports Skills Competition
Individual Sports Skills allows Special Olympics athletes to develop sports skills in a competitive format. This program is designed to serve as a stepping stone for athletes to become a member of a team as they master skills and learn team concepts.
For example, an athlete competing in Basketball Individual Skills would complete a series of three events including shooting, passing and dribbling.
Sports Skills Competition is offered in:
basketball

football (soccer)

golf

floor hockey
... volleyball To learn more about sports skills competitions, visit the Sports section at the Special Olympics Web site. Special Olympics athletes competing in Individual Sports learn fundamental skills by competing with others in non-team sports.

The object is for one team to get as many of their balls (boccia) closer to the pallina (the smallest ball) than the opposing team's closest ball. There maybe be anywhere from two to four to eight players on a team. Each player must take turns rolling (lagging) the ball towards the pallina ball, which has already been thrown onto the field. The players are given points for the balls rolled closest to the pallina ball. Players may also throw on the fly (volo), striking the ball to move the point ball. Balls, including the pallina, may also be displaced by the balls of other players. -Special Olympics International National Governing Body International Bocce Association (IBA) http://rules.boccestandardsassociation.org

Conclusi on Introduction ESPN and the X Games have contacted you to create a new sport they will promote throughout the United States in the 21st century. Your job, if you choose to accept, will be to research the development of sports in the US. You will need to figure out why some sports have become popular and which ones have become profitable. Your sport or game will be introduced on ESPN and the major networks. The Task Here are some questions that you will address during your assignment:
  • Where and how did the sports in the US originate? How have they changed in the past years? How do some of the original sports in the US compare to those that are modern and are gaining popularity? Can you imagine your great grandparents skateboarding? What is the importance of team sports versus individual and dual sports? Spectator sports versus those for personal fitness or recreation? Can you come up with a game for the 21st century that the American people will enjoy?
