Drivers will be deep in thought before the race, imagining the path down the 1,300-meter, 15-curve track for a perfect run.

Every run has its own records. In Park City, top women's speed is 48.92 seconds. Men's is 47.58 for 2-man, 46.57 for 4-man.
The women's competition is on Feb. 19. The men's 2-man finals are on Feb. 17. The 4-man finishes up on Feb. 23.

ean Racine, America's golden girl of bobsled, finally has a chance for an Olympic medal. For the first time, women will compete in the sport at the Salt Lake City games. Critics, however, say she's already embarked on a cold course to a potential victory. In December, Racine made a move that bitterly divided the once blissful women's bobsled community. Just days before Olympic trials began, the 23-year-old hotshot driver replaced longtime teammate and best friend Jen Davidson with another brakeman, splitting up the two-woman team on which the United States had pinned most of its medal hopes and leaving Davidson without a team.

What happens to sports venues after the Olympics leave town?
By Eric Talmadge, Associated Press writer
NAGANO, Japan For the athletes, it's a thrilling, 4,488-foot-long, 15-turn chute of ice with the promise of Olympic gold at the finish.
But for taxpayers, Nagano's bobsled course and several other brand new Olympic sports facilities promise to gobble more gold than they will ever offer up.
Though the Winter Games are still a year away, the post-Olympic future of the bobsled course known as "The Spiral" for its twists and turns and a half-dozen other venues has already become an issue of major concern.
Officials fear Nagano and other local host sites will suffer a fate similar to Lillehammer, which organized one of the best games ever three years ago but whose Olympic venues are now running at a $1.5 million annual deficit.
"It's not so hard holding an Olympics because you have this big organization to work with," Nagano city official Kazuhiko Ichikawa, who oversees Olympic facilities, said during a recent visit to the course. "But finding ways to utilize the facilities afterward is a challenge."
The bobsled run is particularly sensitive because of the tiny number of competitors likely to benefit from it after the games.

Two weekends ago, the Notre Dame track and field team had just stepped off the bus and was checking into their hotel in Windsor, Canada, where they had a meet the next day. As the athletes waited for their room assignments, somebody flipped on the television to watch the Opening Ceremonies for the Winter Olympics. The camera scanned the athletes, showing faces from countries spanning Nepal to Cameroon. All of the sudden, a face from Hungary appeared on the screen, a face quite familiar to the Irish athletes. It was Marton Gyulai, a 2001 Notre Dame graduate who competed in the sprints for the Irish the previous four seasons. "The Opening Ceremonies were going on and for some reason they kind of zoomed in on Marton," Notre Dame sprint coach John Millar said. "That was kind of the talk of the meet for a little while there." Gyulai, whose father and brother have both previously represented Hungary in the Olympics, is carrying on the family tradition as a member of his country's four-man bobsled team. Competition begins today at 5:30 p.m. EST at Utah's Olympic Park.

Bobsled win elates '68 medalist
By JORGE SANCHEZ, Times Staff Writer published February 25, 2002 Today's Olympic photo gallery Complete Olympics coverage INVERNESS Former Olympic medalist Bob Huscher said this year's gold medal-winning U.S. women's bobsled team has done a lot to change the perception that the Winter Olympics is primarily a European showcase. "They proved that America can compete with anybody in the Winter Olympics," Huscher said. "They won the gold medal the first time out. They proved you don't have to be in the sport too many years to have a good team."

Traditionally the darling of sliding sports, bobsledding dates back to the 1880s in Albany, N.Y., born of lumbersled races. Today's world-class U.S. bobsledders are generally track and field and/or football converts because a rare union of strength and speed are essential to jumpstarting the mammoth sleds, which can weigh a maximum of 858 pounds (for the two-man) and 1,386 pounds (four-man).

Deseret News Olympic specialist
For the first time, the sport of bobsled racing is truly gender-blind, with women from around the world dazzling spectators with their swift runs and sharp-edged driving. The International Olympic Committee wisely opened the event to women, and they proved how thrilling competition can be.
With the gold medal going to Jill Bakken, Park City, and her driver Vonetta Flowers, Helena, Ala., (first black athlete to medal in the Winter Games), women's bobsled made a great advance. The sport seems likely to start winning the kind of support that women's ice hockey earned in 1998, when Team USA beat Canada.
The silver and bronze medals the American men bobsledders won Saturday erased the pain of a 46-year "medal drought" and vastly boosted interest in the sport.
"In the end, bobsled is a real, true sport. And I think more people will come into it. That'll be good," Warner said.
The Salt Lake Winter Games made a lot of people believers in women's bobsledding, according to Warner. "We held a beautiful race. I mean, nobody crashed. It was a very tight and very exciting race."

Bobsledding
The bobsled was developed in Switzerland in 1897 when a group of vacationers put runners on a toboggan to get greater speed down the famous Cresta Run at St. Moritz. The sport of racing bobsleds down the mountain quickly became popular among British and American visitors. The first sleds were made of wood but were soon replaced by steel sleds, which were much faster. A part of the Winter Olympic games since their inception in 1924, bobsledding is a sport of exhilarating but dangerous speed.

Competition
The first organized competition in the sport was held on the Cresta Run on January 5, 1898, with five-passenger sleds with two of the passengers being women. For better steering, they were equipped with four runners, positioned on axles much like the four wheels of a car. With the new design, speeds on the mountainside became dangerously fast, so an artificial bobsled run with a gentler slope was built at St. Moritz in 1902.
