The 1964 Canadian Bobsled Team: The Icemen The 1964 Canadian Bobsled Team: Vic and John Emery, Peter Kirby and Doug Anakin It's a special type of person that enjoys rocketing down a twisting tunnel of ice—Vic Emery is that type of person. A ferocious competitor, Emery built Canada's bobsled team from the ground up and in 1964 piloted it to Olympic glory. While known for his heroics in a winter sport, Emery learned to love competition as a child while summering at his family cottage near Thunder Bay, Ontario. "Our father would send us up here as early as the first of May and sometimes collect us after Hallowe'en. We did a lot of swimming, diving, canoeing and sailing. It gave us a wonderful grounding in sports," recalls Emery. Emery's introduction to bobsledding was a bit of a fluke. After he graduated from university, he wanted to see the world. He went to Europe, and in January 1956 found himself in Switzerland. The Winter Olympics had just opened 200 kilometres away in Cortina D'Ampezzo, Italy. Emery decided to ski through the mountains to have a look. Just outside the Olympic venue Emery hitched a ride with some British bobsledders. "I just became friendly with them. We came back to St. Moritz afterwards, just purely by chance, just sort of going with the flow," recalls Emery.

30-Second History of Bobsled and Skeleton
    • Bobsledding is one of the oldest Winter Olympic sports and debuted at the first Winter Olympics ever. Although its earlier wooden ancestors probably originated in the United States, England and Switzerland can claim the invention of the modern sport of bobsledding. The four-man race was the first Olympic bobsled event in 1924. The two-man race was added to the Olympic schedule in 1932. Women's two-man bobsledding will debut at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah. The early details of the history of skeleton sliding and bobsledding is widely disputed. One such account credits the first metal skeleton sled to an American tourist, Stephen Whitney, in 1888. Women's skeleton will debut at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah, along with the debut of women's bobsled.
    Timeline of Bobsled and Skeleton
The first steel skeleton was introduced to the winter resort scene of St. Moritz, Switzerland, by an American tourist, Stephen Whitney. The first steel bobsled was created in Winchester, England.

    A New Olympic Sport?
By Rod Mar, The Seattle Times
One of the best parts about covering an Olympics is the camaraderie that exists among the shooters.
At the end of any night, you can look around at your peers, and after the subject of "anyone up for a drink or a bite to eat?" comes, "what are you covering tomorrow?"
And the answer to that on any given day might be, "downhill", "ski-jumping", "speed-skating", or "aerials". It's a good thing no one asked me the night before my most unusual assignment of the games. I woke up before dawn to catch a media bus to park city, where we bribed a bus driver to drop us off at a resort called "the canyons" where I was the only photographer with a small group of reporters to cover.... Shovel racing.

The national broadcasts will feature some of the stars of the 2002 Olympics along with curling, the cult hit of the Salt Lake Games. 2002 Olympic medalists, including skeleton gold medalist Jim Shea Jr. and Tristan Gale, men's bobsled silver medalist Todd Hays, and the silver medalists in doubles luge, Mark Grimmette and Brian Martin, will likely be featured in the broadcasts. "As America's Olympic network, it makes sense for NBC to be involved with these national governing bodies in a creative project like 'Ice 2003'," said Jon Miller, Senior Vice President, Sports Programming, NBC Sports. "Following the success of the Salt Lake Games and the attention these sports and these athletes enjoyed last year, this provides a great opportunity for us to bring these winter sports competitions together in a unique way for our viewers." During the Games in Salt Lake City, Utah, these three national governing bodies combined to win eight medals, including three gold in five different disciplines; luge, men's and women's bobsled, and men's and women's skeleton. Packaged and produced by Carr-Hughes Productions, of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., "Verizon ICE 2003" will be a fully integrated program, moving between the various sports from venues around the globe. Verizon has a long history of winter sports sponsorships, dating back to 1985 when it became the founding sponsor of USA Luge. Additionally, Verizon became the premiere corporate sponsor of the United States Bobsled and Skeleton Federation in 2001.
